Chapter 3 Psychic Phenomena and the Mind–Body Problem: Historical Notes on a Neglected Conceptual Tradition Carlos S. Alvarado Abstract Although there is a long tradition of philosophical and historical discussions of the mind–body problem, most of them make no mention of psychic phenomena as having implications for such an issue. This chapter is an overview of selected writings published in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries literatures of mesmerism, spiritualism, and psychical research whose authors have discussed apparitions, telepathy, clairvoyance, out-of-body experiences, and other parapsy- chological phenomena as evidence for the existence of a principle separate from the body and responsible for consciousness. Some writers discussed here include indi- viduals from different time periods. Among them are John Beloff, J.C. Colquhoun, Carl du Prel, Camille Flammarion, J.H. Jung-Stilling, Frederic W.H. Myers, and J.B. Rhine. Rather than defend the validity of their position, my purpose is to docu- ment the existence of an intellectual and conceptual tradition that has been neglected by philosophers and others in their discussions of the mind–body problem and aspects of its history. “The paramount importance of psychical research lies in its demonstration of the fact that the physical plane is not the whole of Nature” English physicist William F. If you want to make someone cry, have them read Chapter 12 of this book: A doctor decided that a child’s bed-wetting warranted treatment with a tricyclic antidepressant. That drug’s “side” effects were then “treated” with further neurologically targeted (psychotropic) “medications,” and 20 years later the formerly bed-wetting child is a permanently “mentally disabled” adult (p. 248 ff.). Anecdotes, individual cases, prove nothing, of course, at least not scientifi cally. But this story comes in Chapter 12, which has been preceded by fully documented accounts of the widespread damage done to tens of thousands of adults and children during the last half century, as psychiatry came to assert that all behavioral, emotional, or mental “problems” stem from drug-reversible biological dysfunctions of the brain. The mainstream research literature is cited by Whitaker on the following points: — The terminology of “anti-psychotic,” “anti-depressant,” “mood stabilizer,” and the like is fundamentally misleading, because the drugs do not have such specifi c, targeted effects. — Instead, these drugs “muck things up” by interfering in a blunderbuss way with various neurotransmitters: They convert normal brain functioning into non-normal functioning. When given to emotionally or mentally disturbed people, they do effect a change of some sort—which can easily be misinterpreted as ameliorating the perceived problem. -

Fatima Apparitional Experiences Dr James Paul Pandarakalam An apparition may provide evidence of the authenticity of its manifestation at a physical site by offering predictions that are to be fulfilled at a later date. One of the distinctive features of the events at Fatima in Portugal in 1917 is the fulfilment in our own time of the predictions made. Ever since the occurrence of these famous visionary experiences, among observers and believers there has been an exponential interest in the third secret. Voice phenomena observed during Marian apparitions such as those at Fatima have analogies with externally controlled recurrent spontaneous psychokinetic (RSPK) activity, and visionary experiences involving RSPK or RSPK-like activity may be instances of apparitions at a physical site. The voice extinction and sensory disconnection demonstrated in the Fatima percipients could be explained as psychokinetic-like activity on the part of the apparition. True apparitional experiences prove the existence of psi-like phenomena and discarnate survival. In general, paranormal phenomena involve non-physical, physical and social events. Only physical events are accessible to scientific study. Marian apparitional experiences may be subjected to scientific analysis, but Marian apparition is beyond the scientific realm. The Fatima apparitional events inform research into post-mortem existence and offer a complementary insight into our current knowledge of the discarnate realm. Marian apparitions may be regarded as an antidote to the afflictions of the present century. The term "apparitions" became applied to perceptions of persons who were not physically present to the percipient. The investigators attached special importance to apparitional experiences that either coincided with the death of the perceived person or contained verified details of which the percipient had no normal knowledge. In recent decades interest in appari- tions on the part of investigators has greatly diminished, but this is not be- cause the experiences no longer occur. A 1948 survey in Great Britain report- ed that 14.3% of respondents had had such an experience and a 1979 survey in the United States gave an even higher figure of 17%. This paper reports the investigations of six modern apparitional experiences occurring in the United States and the United Kingdom between 1955 and 1989. The percipients were interviewed in the 1980s and 1990s. Corroboration before verification was only obtainable in one case. Other confirmatory information, such as death certificates, was, however, obtained for some cases. In four of the six cases the experience coincided with the death of the perceived person or oc- curred close to the time of the death. In the other two cases the percipient saw a deceased relative of a dying person just before the death of that person. -

Ernesto Bozzano on the Phenomena of Bilocation Carlos S. Alvarado, Ph.D. University of Virginia ABSTRACT: Italian psychical researcher Ernesto Bozzano (1862-1943) was a well-known student of parapsychological phenomena and a strong defender of the concept of survival of bodily death. This paper includes an excerpt of what Bozzano referred to as the phenomena of bilocation, a term he used for the phantom limb sensations experienced by amputees, autoscopy, out-of-body and near-death experiences (OBEs and NDEs), and a variety of luminous or cloud-like emanations that clairvoyants claimed left the body at the moment of death. He believed these phenomena indicated the existence of a subtle body capable of exteriorization during life as well as at the moment of death. I present Bozzano's ideas in the context of his career as a psychical researcher and of previous discussions of the topic found in the early literature of Spiritualism and psychical research. Although some contemporary students of OBEs and NDEs still speculate on the relationship of these phenomena to the concept of survival of death, Bozzano's work is not widely cited today and few researchers have followed up his method. Nonetheless, his work is of historical interest, reminding us of areas and phenomena that deserve further study. EXCEPTIONAL HUMAN EXPERIENCES, DISCLOSURE, AND A MORE INCLUSIVE VIEW OF PHYSICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, AND SPIRITUAL WELL-BEING Genie Palmer Palo Alto, California William Braud Mountain View, California ABSTRACT: The nature, accompaniments, and life impacts of 5 types of exceptional human experiences (EHEs: mystical, psychic, unusual death-related, encounter, and exceptional normal) were explored, using correlational and qualitative analyses. An experimental design and standardized assessments were used to explore possible beneficial outcomes of working with and disclosing EHEs, individually or in psy- choeducational groups. EHEs occurred frequently, were perceived as meaningful and important, and their disclosure was perceived as beneficial. Correlational results indicated that frequent and/or profound EHEs were positively and significantly related to high levels of meaning and purpose in life, high levels of spirituality, ‘‘thin’’ or permeable boundaries, and a tendency toward transformative life changes. Disclo- sure was positively and significantly associated with meaning and purpose in life, positive psychological attitudes and well-being, and reduced stress-related symptoms. Qualitative analyses revealed that EHEs and their disclosure were accompanied by themes of well-being, meaning, openness, spirituality, need- satisfaction, and transformative change. OCCULT POWER AND AFRICA’S SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROBLEMS Aloysius Obiwulu Abstract It is known to Africans and the international community that Africa is a poor continent, though she is very rich in mineral and human resources. Her basic problems as a continent include: bad leadership, corrupt and selfish politicians, mismanagement of resources, high degree of illiteracy etc. These have led the continent into various socio-economic problems including poverty and war. My research has proved that in Africa, especially in the sub-Saharan part, many people believe in the existence of occult powers and this belief affects their behaviours: the way they do business, their attitude to one another, their political and social life. Such occult powers include: witchcraft, sorcery, possession of extra ordinary power, divination and ability to foretell the future, conjuring the dead, mermaid spirits, jujus (gods and goddesses), ability to control various spirits, etc. Academics in various fields, successful business men and women, renowned politicians, legal practitioners accept that occult phenomena influence the way they lead their lives and carry on with their businesses and professions. This paper investigates in a critical and coherent manner whether Africans can make use of occult powers to solve their problems. For example, could corrupt politicians and dictators be removed from office by the use of occult powers? What use could be made of the so-called occult powers of witchcraft, necromancy, jujus etc. in solving Africa’s problems? Introduction In Africa, as in some other continents, the belief in the powers and influence of the occult is widespread. In the socio-political sphere as well as among the academia and religious professionals in Africa this belief plays a prominent role. -

A Proj ective Geometry for Separation Experiences F. Gordon Greene Sacramento, CA ABSTRACT: I present a projective geometry for out-of-body "separation ex periences," built up out of a series of higher space analogies and resulting diagrams. The model draws upon recent understandings of cosmic symme tries linking relativity theory to quantum physics. This perspective is grounded inside a more general hyperspace theory, supposing that our three dimensional space is embedded within a hierarchy of higher dimensions. Only the next higher space, the fourth dimension, is directly utilized in this exposition. At least two degrees of consciousness expansion are identified as prerequisites to a comprehensive phenomenological taxonomy of ecstatic out of-body, near-death, and mystical/visionary experiences. The first assumes a partial spatiotemporalization of consciousness into a fractional domain lo cated between three and four dimensions. The second assumes a complete spatiotemporalization into four dimensions. Partial expansions are associated with separation experiences and with thematically related activities of a seeming paranormal character. Complete expansions are associated with "timeless" life panoramas and with excursions into hyperphysical realms. The paper concentrates on partial expansions, in analyzing the psychody namics underlying, and ostensive paranormal activities accompanying, sepa ration experiences. Higher space theories for ecstatic other world visions, and for re lated activities of a seeming paranormal character, have long in trigued parapsychologists. Among the ostensive psychic happenings so explained are such things as clairvoyance, remote viewing, telepathy, teleportation, psychokinesis (PK), psychic healing, levitation, and pre cognition (Broad, 1969; Dunne, 1927; Hinton, 1904; Krippner and Vil loldo, 1976; Lombroso, 1909; Luttenberger, 1977; Nash, 1963; F.
