Just beyond the wall lies the neighborhood of al-Ram, now severed from East Jerusalem. Inside front and inside back cover image: ‚ ‚ 31°49 10”N / 35°15 59”E Palestinian side of the Separation Wall on the outskirts of the Palestinian town of ʿAnata. The Israeli settlement of Pisgat Ze’ev lies beyond in East Jerusalem. This publication takes its point of departure from Fazal Sheikh’s Memory Trace, the first of his three-volume photographic proj- ect on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Published in the spring of 2015, The Erasure Trilogy is divided into three separate vol- umes—Memory Trace, Desert Bloom, and Independence/Nakba. The project seeks to explore the legacies of the Arab–Israeli War of 1948, which resulted in the dispossession and displacement of three quarters of the Palestinian population, in the establishment of the State of Israel, and in the reconfiguration of territorial borders across the region. Elements of these volumes have been exhibited at the Slought Foundation in Philadelphia, Storefront for Art and Architecture, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Pace/MacGill Gallery in New York, and will now be presented at the Al-Ma’mal Foundation for Contemporary Art in East Jerusalem, and the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center in Ramallah. In addition, historical documents and materials related to the history of Al-’Araqīb, a Bedouin village that has been destroyed and rebuilt more than one hundred times in the ongoing “battle over the Negev,” first presented at the Slought Foundation, will be shown at Al-Ma’mal.

  • Ethiopian National Project Mid-Year Report 2016-2017
Ethiopian National Project Mid-Year Report 2016-2017 The Ethiopian National Project (ENP) was created by Jewish Federations as Diaspora Jewry’s tool to address the needs of Ethiopian-Israelis in partnership with the Government of Israel and the Ethiopian-Israeli community itself. The transformation ENP has succeeded in engendering is no less than extraordinary: scholastic gaps are closing, educational performance is improving, risk situations are decreasing and empowerment is broadening with each passing year. The Ethiopian National Project – Transformation of a Community ENP aims to ensure the full and successful integration of Ethiopian Jews into Israeli society. ENP’s methodology of holistic interventions on a national scale that fully include the Ethiopian-Israeli community, while strictly adhering to the critical importance of external evaluations to measure the impact and effect of ENP’s work, has resulted in unequivocally successful programs. In fact, due to its success, this school year brings new and exciting changes to ENP’s SPACE Scholastic Assistance Program, as part of a four-year initiative by the Government of Israel requesting that ENP expand its reach to 8,729 students in 35 cities nationwide while including 20% non- Ethiopian-Israeli students. In addition, where traditionally the Ministry of Aliyah and Absorption was the leading government ministry to spearhead ENP’s work, from 2016 the Ministry of Education will take the leading role as part of the new four-year initiative. In addition, the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) recently launched a campaign to raise matching dollars over four years to ensure that ENP can expand its SPACE Scholastic Assistance Program nationwide.

The pattern now is to take short weekend jaunts to Prague, Paris, London, Rome or Budapest. This in addition to the Nofshonim to Turkey, Cyprus and Greece. Carol and I spent a marvellous four days (3 nights) in Prague last month, it is really the most beautiful and interesting city in Europe today. Magnificent buildings and architecture, the Jewish quarter is a must for every tourist visiting Prague and is Ju.st fascinating with the old Shul, Cemetery and moving memorial to the 80.000 Jews killed in Czech. All the names are beautifully written on a wall names that all of us will recognise from our families past history. Prague is also a music lovers paradise with a never ending number of concerts held daily at tens of locations around the city. We were fortunate to hear a 300-strong choir in the main Cathedral singing together with the Prague Symphony Orchestra.
