VILLA RUFFIGNANO Your home for this unique holiday will be a stunning Villa, dating back to the 16th century when it was the center of an antique farm on which 30 people worked. It was recently beautifully renovated, respecting its traditional Tuscan characteristics combined with the necessities of modern life, while maintaining its old-world splendor. Immersed in an oasis of natural beauty (over 200 acres) which you will be free to explore during relaxing walks - this is an ideal location for leaving behind your daily routine. Here you will get a taste of the traditions and customs, while enjoying breathtaking views over Cortona’s mountains and valley, in the utmost of privacy. The refreshing pool lies at the foot of the house and overlooks the pristine scenic valley. Its waters inviting you to dive in! The Villa is on three levels. On the ground loor there is a wine cellar, a large living-room with ancient stone ireplace, bathroom, a large dining-area and big professional kitchen. The irst loor has a living-room, a cozy kitchen with ireplace, three bedrooms of which two have bathrooms en-suite plus one more additional bathroom. The top loor has three bedrooms, two of which have bathrooms en-suite plus and additional third bathroom as well. This top loor is complete with another living-dining-area plus a second kitchen. TUSCANY AND CORTONA This picture postcard town is a perfect representation of exquisite Tuscany: soft rolling hills, lines of cypress trees, endless vineyards, orderly olive groves, art cities, majestic castles, and a history that goes back centuries. The charming and noble town of Cortona is a jewel which dominates the enchanting landscape of the rich Valdichiana valley, bordered on the horizon by sweeping hills and the wide expanse of Lake Trasimeno. Cortona’s storied history is rich in archaeological wonders from the Etruscan, Roman, Medieval and Renaissance eras. The hill town is magniicently positioned between Arezzo, Perugia, Florence, and Siena, and sits right between the Chianti region and Umbrian valleys. This is a strategic location for anyone who wants to experience the heart of Italy by taking brief and relaxing day excursions to the surrounding areas. THE WEEK Upon your arrival, your group will be greeted with a welcome drink, as you are ensconced in the warm atmosphere of Villa Rufignano. We will be there to meet you and share with you all the information that you’ll need as you start your trip of a lifetime. You will have full autonomy in deciding your schedule the way you prefer, with plenty of interesting explorations on your free time and the wonderful experiences we include in this unique week away. Here you will live like Etruscan Royalty, as you will have a private chef for the entire week prepare your breakfast each morning and spectacular dinners every evening featuring amazing dishes! So let yourself be carried away into our culinary tradition by the smell of fresh made bread baked in the ancient wood stove, the homemade pasta, delicious meat sauces, the roasted meats, fresh vegetables and locally produced cheese. Here you will taste the real lavors of Tuscany’s traditional food. On one of your days, we have even arranged for a cooking class, with your chef, in the charming kitchen of Rufignano.     Evidence for the Use of Raw Materials for the Manufacture of Black-Gloss Ware and Italian Sigillata at Arezzo and Volterra J. Theodore Peña – University of California, Berkeley Abtract A program of compositional analysis involving the mineralogical (optical miscroscopy, petrographic analysis) and chemical (NAA) characterization of Black-Gloss Ware and Italian Sigillata from the site of Cetamura del Chianti along with tiles made from potting clay from several locations in northern Etruria sheds light on the use of raw materials for the manufacture of these two pottery classes at Volterra and Arezzo. The program achieved no textural or chemical matches between the specimens of Black-Gloss Ware of likely Volterran origin and several specimens of clay from outcrops of the Plio-Plestocene marine clay in the environs of Volterra that were very probably employed for the manufacture of this pottery. This suggests that the manufacture of this pottery involved the levigation of the clay. In contrast, an excellent textural and chemical match was obtained between the specimens of Black-Gloss Ware and Italian Sigillata of likely Arretine origin and specimens of the argille di Quarata lacustrine clay (formation agQ) that outcrops along the Torrente Castro/Canale Maestro della Chiana to the west of Arezzo. This indicates that the manufacture of Black-Gloss Ware and Italian Sigillata at Arezzo did not involve the levigation of the clay employed. The agQ formation is overlain by a bed of peat that is effectively unique in peninsular Italy. Peat has been regularly used as a fuel for pottery manufacture in northern Europe, and it seems likely that the producers of these two pottery classes at Arezzo employed it for this purpose.

BIBLIOTHECA Prologue Describing a plant might seem banal if it was not for the fact that the plant being described is on the verge of extinction and practically unknown. Aglione di Valdichiana is, on the one hand, a basic garden vegetable. But it is also much more than that. It is a pearl that has been hidden away for years (and which we have now rediscovered) that relays the character of the terroir and the sweet breath of Venus. It’s the beginning of a new project! An incipit! Hidden in its vertical shape is a sign that indicates a path that speaks of distant origins, powerful symbols, and ancient civilizations. We shall leave to others the work of looking for and discovering the cultural references that confirm intuitions or creative fantasies. We have a different task: beginning. – We need to begin producing aglione according to fair agricultural trade regulations that respect the earth and its fruits; – We need to begin a path of communication that, before even cultivating the earth, helps us cultivate ourselves; – We need to begin welcoming growers who believe in a sustainable project that is re- spectful of the fundamental rules of healthy living, people who are not subordinate to or trapped by commercial interests or ideologies that have nothing to do with the healthy passion for farming; – We need to look beyond, not simply at the result of our planted fields but at a new use of the product, we need to collaborate with producers of specialty foods, without jealousy or provincial narrow-mindedness.
