ORAL HISTORY T-0001 INTERVIEWEES: CHICK FINNEY AND MARTIN LUTHER MACKAY INTERVIEWER: IRENE CORTINOVIS JAZZMAN PROJECT APRIL 6, 1971 This transcript is a part of the Oral History Collection (S0829), available at The State Historical Society of Missouri. If you would like more information, please contact us at [email protected]. Today is April 6, 1971 and this is Irene Cortinovis of the Archives of the University of Missouri. I have with me today Mr. Chick Finney and Mr. Martin L. MacKay who have agreed to make a tape recording with me for our Oral History Section. They are musicians from St. Louis of long standing and we are going to talk today about their early lives and also about their experiences on the music scene in St. Louis. CORTINOVIS: First, I'll ask you a few questions, gentlemen. Did you ever play on any of the Mississippi riverboats, the J.S, The St. Paul or the President? FINNEY: I never did play on any of those name boats, any of those that you just named, Mrs. Cortinovis, but I was a member of the St. Louis Crackerjacks and we played on kind of an unknown boat that went down the river to Cincinnati and parts of Kentucky. But I just can't think of the name of the boat, because it was a small boat. Do you need the name of the boat? CORTINOVIS: No. I don't need the name of the boat. FINNEY: Mrs. Cortinovis, this is Martin McKay who is a name drummer who played with all the big bands from Count Basie to Duke Ellington. -

Subscribe Past Issues Translate View this email in your browser For Immediate Release Americana Folk Rock Singer Songwriter Releases New Album "Simple Things" Recorded at Freemont Recording Studios - Mastered by Tone Proper Portland Oregon (July 19, 2018) – Americana Folk Rock singer/songwriter Carl Solomon has just released his third album “Simple Things” and it’s quite the compilation. A personal collection of the songwriter’s from the heart songs that he delivers with notable passion. One of the hallmarks of Carl’s new release is the predominant incorporation of various Americana / Folk instruments that have been strategically placed at the beginning and throughout a number of his tracks. For instance on track five “Come What May” the arrangement incorporates an accordion and on track eight “Always Running” presents a banjo front and center. The noticeable incorporation of these instruments deliver a definitive distinction between the tracks. Another interesting feature of Carl’s new release is that the collection moves between various beats. For example track six, “Ticket To Nowhere” delivers a soft rock feel, noticeable but yet it does not over power the senses and therefore distract from the experience of enjoying the lyrics. Track seven on the other hand “Navajo Rain” sets itself apart with its subdued beat which again is not overpowering but quite different from track six. In total the album presents ten new tracks that is roots music at its best. Carl’s natural way of blending his music with his lyrics coupled with his marvelous storytelling capabilities presents the listener with a pleasant, enjoyable experience. -

ORAL HISTORY PROJECT in Celebration of the City of Sugar Land 60th Anniversary GOODSILL: What brought your family to Sugar Land, Billy? GOODSILL: What is William Alfred Streich’s story? STRITCH: My grandmother, Mary Alice Blair, was born in STRITCH: I never knew my grandfather. He died before I was Blessing, Texas, but her family moved to Sugar Land early in her born, in 1957 or so. My older sister is the only one who vaguely life. My grandmother and Buddy Blair were cousins. Mary Alice remembers him. He worked for a philanthropist in Houston whose was one of the founding families of First Presbyterian Church in name was Alonzo Welch. He had a foundation, the Welch Foundation, Sugar Land, founded in 1920 or so. There is definitely a Sugar which started in 1954, two years after Welch’s death in 1952. My Land connection that goes way back for us. grandfather was Mr. Welch’s right hand man. I know this through stories my grandmother told me over the years. At the time she married my dad, William Alfred Striech, they lived in Houston, where I was born in 1962. When I was about My dad who was an only child, who was raised in Houston. He went one, they decided to move out to Sugar Land and build a house. to Texas A & M for college and directly into the service afterward. He [Editor’s note: Striech was the original spelling of the name. Billy served two years in the Air Force. He met and married my mother, Jane goes by Stritch.] Toffelmire, during the course of the war. -

Starr-Waterman American Popular Music Chapter 11: The 1970s: Rock Music, Disco, and the Popular Mainstream Key People Allman Brothers Band: Most important southern rock band of the late 1960s and early 1970s who reconnected the generative power of the blues to the mainstream of rock music. Barry White (1944‒2004): Multitalented African American singer, songwriter, arranger, conductor, and producer who achieved success as an artist in the 1970s with his Love Unlimited Orchestra; perhaps best known for his full, deep voice. Carlos Santana (b. 1947): Mexican-born rock guitarist who combined rock, jazz, and Afro-Latin elements on influential albums like Abraxas. Carole King (b. 1942): Singer-songwriter who recorded influential songs in New York’s Brill Building and later recorded the influential album Tapestry in 1971. Charlie Rich (b. 1932): Country performer known as the “Silver Fox” who won the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year award in 1974 for his song “The Most Beautiful Girl.” Chic: Disco group who recorded the hit “Good Times.” Chicago: Most long-lived and popular jazz rock band of the 1970s, known today for anthemic love songs such as “If You Leave Me Now” (1976), “Hard to Say I’m Sorry” (1982), and “Look Away” (1988). David Bowie (1947‒2016): Glam rock pioneer who recorded the influential album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in 1972. Dolly Parton (b. 1946): Country music star whose flexible soprano voice, songwriting ability, and carefully crafted image as a cheerful sex symbol combined to gain her a loyal following among country fans. -

We understand that starting a new match off through a virtual platform can potentially feel awkward, so we’ve developed a template of conversation prompts to help you begin getting to know one another. How to Use: The first three months of suggested conversations and activities in your match are outlined below. You’ll notice that we’ve designed this template to follow a natural progression beginning with getting to know one another, discussing your different experiences, and goal setting for the future. We strongly recommend spending a minimum of 10-15 minutes each week, talking about the prompts below. Bigs and Littles should take turns leading the conversation each week and always make sure to check in with each other and make space to talk about and express feelings. Note: Keep in mind that this is intended to be a helpful guide and is not required in your match. If you and your Little prefer to come up with your own conversation topics and activities, go for it! Take what works for you and leave the rest. Gatekeeping has expanded into other fields throughout the years, with its concepts growing more and more easily applicable in many other aspects of life. One way it presents itself is in regard to racial inclusion and equality, and despite the headway we’ve seemingly made as a society, we are still lightyears away from where we need to be. Because of this, the concept of cultural property has become even more paramount, as a means for keeping one’s cultural history and identity preserved. -
