This page is dedicated to the Muslims of Spain of 1492 who laid their lives to protect Andalus in the face of aggression while struggling to uphold Islam. ". I will forgive all the shortcomings and remove the evil deeds of those who were expelled from their homes or were persecuted for My sake and who fought for My cause and were slain. "God is Beautiful, and He loves Beauty." -Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Moorish Architecture in Andalusia. Moorish-Andalusian art and architecture combine elements of various traditions into a new, autonomous style. Among the outstanding architectural witnesses to this achievement are the Great Mosque in Cordova and the Alhambra in Granada, recognized and admired as part of the world's heitage right up to the present day. They are described in detail in this book. The main centres of Hispano-Islamic art and architecture, the cities of Cordova, Seville and Granada, are discussed within the chronological framework of developments, both political and cultural, from 710 to 1492. The author traces the changes in architectural forms over the centuries, and concludes with an attempt to identify those enduring characteristics which run like a thread through Hispano-Islamic architecture, for all the different influences to which it was subject. Alongside mosques, castle ruins, and splendid palaces, the reader will find detailed photographs of Moorish decorative art in all its thousand and one variations. "The contrast between the desolate ruined castles on the heights of the sun-baked mountain landscape, and the palaces in the cities, with their cool patios, babbling fountains and scented blossoms testifying to a lifestyle of elegant sophistication - this contrast has stimulated the imagination of the northern European ever since the days of the Romantic movement." • Ingressi Di Milano Curated by Karl Kolbitz Photographs by Matthew Billings, Paola Pansini, and Delfino Sisto Legnani
Press Release Ingressi di Milano Curated by Karl Kolbitz Photographs by Matthew Billings, Paola Pansini, and Delfino Sisto Legnani TASCHEN Store Milan (1st Floor Gallery), Via Meravigli 17 April 5 – June 18 2017 “One might call the ingressi Milan’s best-kept secret, the architectural equivalent of Poe’s purloined letter: a secret that is “prominently hidden” for all to see, and for a more restricted number to enter. With the ingressi, in fact, we are dealing with spaces that, by a peculiar logic of representation, start as passages to a given place but end up becoming their own destinations.” - Daniel Sherer TASCHEN is pleased to announce the opening of Ingressi di Milano, a new exhibition of photographs curated by Karl Kolbitz. The show is presented in parallel with the release of Kolbitz’s eponymous TASCHEN publication, an unprecedented look at Milan’s design DNA. Over the course of countless trips to Milan, Kolbitz’s exploration of the city’s eclectic aesthetics triggered the following, paradoxical question: in a city famous the world over as an exporter of design, how has its multitude of exuberant entryways remained so inconspicuous? In his book, Kolbitz opens the doors to these remarkable Milanese spaces, leading us through 144 of the city’s most sumptuous entrance halls dating from 1920 to 1970. At the intersection of art, architecture, and design, the collection showcases the work of some of the city’s most illustrious architects and designers, including Giovanni Muzio, Gio Ponti, Piero Portaluppi, and Luigi Caccia Dominioni, as well as non-pedigreed architecture of equal impact and interest.

  • The Kippenberger Conundrum: How the Wildly Prolific Artist’S Artist Became an Eight-Figure Auction Darling
The Kippenberger Conundrum: How the Wildly Prolific Artist’s Artist Became an Eight-Figure Auction Darling BY Nate Freeman POSTED 01/08/18 12:40 PM Martin Kippenberger. COURTESY TASCHEN It was the peak of the 2014 fall auction season in New York, and though nearly two decades had gone by since Martin Kippenberger’s death of liver failure in 1997, the artist’s market had never been hotter. Prior to its bellwether postwar and contemporary evening sale, Christie’s had set the estimate for a prized 1988 Kippenberger self-portrait in its November sale at $20 million—an aggressive estimate, but one that paid off. It was bought by dealer Larry Gagosian, hammering at $20 million for a with-premium total of $22.5 million. The sale capped a run of seasons where the Kippenberger market rose precipitously—an irony for an artist who lampooned both “try-hard” artists who sucked up to the market people and the market people who got suckered into buying any of it. All of Kippenberger’s top ten highest-selling works at auction have come in the last five years, and after the one-two punch of 1988 works sold at Christie’s in May and November 2014—the $22.5 million picture nabbed by Gagosian, but also another work from the same series that sold for $18.6 million—the same auction house sold two more Kippenbergers in May 2015: another 1988 self-portrait for $16.4 million, and one of his 1996 paintings of Jacqueline Picasso for $12.5 million. The “Picasso Paintings”—or, as they’re sometimes called, the “Underwear Paintings”—are perhaps Kippenberger’s most beloved series, based on photographs taken of Picasso, his hero, but self-effacing in tone.

2009 JOHN LAUTNER: An Annotated Bibliography Compiled and Annotated by John Crosse Wolff Residence (see item 220.) 2 John Lautner: An Annotated Bibliography (Uncorrected Proof – Not for Sale) Chemosphere (Malin House) (see item 136.) Compiled and Annotated by John Crosse ©2009 modern-ISM Press 6333 Esplanade Playa del Rey, CA 90293 [email protected] 310-301-6339 3 Introduction The 2008 Hammer exhibition “Between Earth and Heaven: The Architecture of John Lautner” and Getty-Hammer Symposium “Against Reason: John Lautner and Postwar Architecture” created a flood of publicity and generated much renewed interest in Lautner‟s life and work. It also motivated me to look deeper into the literature for information on this unique and creative genius. A logical starting point for me was to perform a “Lautner” search in my 8,000 item “Julius Shulman Annotated Bibliography” prepared while researching a book on Shulman cover photos. The search resulted in 275 articles with Shulman photos of Lautner projects. Shulman has logged close to 75 assignments on Lautner projects over the years for various clients ranging from Lautner himself to book and article authors, magazine editors, newspaper reporters, exhibition curators, homeowners and realtors. He also used his considerable marketing skills and contacts with publishers and editors to help spread the gospel of modernism according to Lautner to a global audience. This bibliography compiles my Shulman-Lautner findings with the excellent bibliographic foundation laid by Ludolf von Alvensleben in the 1991 Viennese exhibition catalog “John Lautner: Architect: Los Angeles”, “John Lautner, Architect” with text by Lautner and edited by Frank Escher and the John Lautner Foundation web site.

  • California Dreamin': Walton Ford Explores
ARTnews November 30, 2017 GAGOSIAN California Dreamin’: Walton Ford Explores Golden State Origin Myths at Gagosian Beverly Hills Nate Freeman Walton Ford, Ars Gratia Artis, 2017. PHOTO: © TOM POWELL. ART: © WALTON FORD/COURTESY GAGOSIAN The book publisher and collector Benedikt Taschen lives in a John Lautner–designed Los Angeles home dubbed the Chemosphere, and on a late September morning, the Chemosphere was under attack by deep-fanged giant saber-toothed tigers emerging from the tar pits. The creatures came out of the black muck and galloped up the hills, the blinking city behind them, and when they approached the base of the modernist icon of architecture, they found a fair- skinned mountain lion to make prey. Claws out, saliva oozing down teeth, the big cats prepared to feast. “In the classic Hollywood horror film pitch, I’m saying, the animals rise out of the pits and come and attack contemporary L.A.,” said Walton Ford, who had painted the narrative of rampaging beasts as a masterful triptych called La Brea (2016). We were standing in the Gagosian space on West 21st street in New York, looking at the work that would make up “Calafia,” Ford’s show currently up at Gagosian in Beverly Hills through December 16. “It’s some dumb concept pitch that’s kind of like Sharknado,” Ford went on, referring to a made- for-TV movie in which there is a tornado filled with sharks. “Unbeknownst to L.A. this thing is happening, and they’re coming across the hill. And the first victim is the mountain lion being killed by the saber-toothed tiger right at the foot of the Chemosphere—my friend Benedikt Tachen’s house.
