Morphological and Endocrine Correlates of Dominance in Male

Lumas for the degree of Master of Science in Zoology presented on 1 October 1982 Title: Morphological and Endocrine Correlates of Dominance in Male Ring-necked Pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) Abstract approved: Redacted for Privacy Dr. Frank L. Moore An investigation of the correlation between a number of behavioral, morphological and physiological parameters and dominance status of male Ring-necked Pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) was undertaken. Dominant males performed significantly more aggressive behaviors than subordinates and a higher proportion of these behaviors was directed toward distantly ranked subordinates. Animals could also be ranked in a subordinance hierarchy with subordinate males performing submissive behaviors and vocalizations at highest frequencies and directing the largest proportion of these behaviors toward distantly ranked dominants. A number of morphological characters were measured and their correlations with dominance status were investigated. Several significant correlations between certain body and wattle measurements were found. Experimental manipulations of the wattles were conducted to attempt to change behaviors and dominance status. Wattles of dominant birds were painted black to make them look subordinate. Wattles of subordinate birds were painted red to make them look dominant. Two of the dominant birds received more aggressive behaviors from true subordinates, after their wattles were painted. Two of the subordinate birds received fewer aggressive behaviors from true dominants, after their wattles were painted. Plasma levels of testicular hormones were measured during hierarchy establishment and in stable hierarchies. No correlations were found between testosterone levels and dominance status or frequencies of any of the agonistic behaviors measured. Exogenous hormones (estradiol, dihydrotestosterone, corticosterone, ACTH4_10 and a-MSH) were injected to attempt to alter behaviors and change dominance status. -

Galliform Baraminology 4 Abstract This study investigates the number of galliform bird holobaramins. Criteria used to determine the members of any given holobaramin included a biblical word analysis, statistical baraminology, and hybridization. The biblical search yielded limited biosystematic information; however, since it is a necessary and useful part of baraminology research it is both included and discussed. -

All photos in this report were taken by Sam Woods. 1 www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-0514 [email protected] Page Tropical Birding Trip Report Sri Lanka: January 2015 INTRODUCTION In many ways Sri Lanka covers it all; for the serious birder, even those with experience from elsewhere in the Indian subcontinent, it offers up a healthy batch of at least 32 endemic bird species (this list continues to grow, though, so could increase further yet); for those without any previous experience of the subcontinent it offers these but, being an island of limited diversity, not the overwhelming numbers of birds, which can be intimidating for the first timer; and for those with a natural history slant that extends beyond the avian, there is plentiful other wildlife besides, to keep all happy, such as endemic monkeys, strange reptiles only found on this teardrop-shaped island, and a bounty of butterflies, which feature day-in, day-out. It should also be made clear that while it appears like a chunk of India which has dropped of the main subcontinent, to frame it, as merely an extension of India, would be a grave injustice, as Sri Lanka feels, looks, and even tastes very different. There are some cultural quirks that make India itself, sometimes challenging to visit for the westerner. -

HYBRIDIZATION & ZOOGEOGRAPHIC PATTERNS IN PHEASANTS PAUL A. JOHNSGARD The purpose of this paper is to infonn members of the W.P.A. of an unusual scientific use of the extent and significance of hybridization among pheasants (tribe Phasianini in the proposed classification of Johnsgard~ 1973). This has occasionally occurred naturally, as for example between such locally sympatric species pairs as the kalij (Lophura leucol11elana) and the silver pheasant (L. nycthelnera), but usually occurs "'accidentally" in captive birds, especially in the absence of conspecific mates. Rarely has it been specifically planned for scientific purposes, such as for obtaining genetic, morphological, or biochemical information on hybrid haemoglobins (Brush. 1967), trans ferins (Crozier, 1967), or immunoelectrophoretic comparisons of blood sera (Sato, Ishi and HiraI, 1967). The literature has been summarized by Gray (1958), Delacour (1977), and Rutgers and Norris (1970). Some of these alleged hybrids, especially those not involving other Galliformes, were inadequately doculnented, and in a few cases such as a supposed hybrid between domestic fowl (Gallus gal/us) and the lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae) can be discounted. -

Abstract An updated checklist of the birds of Goa, India, is presented below based upon a collation of supporting information from museum specimens, photographs, audio recordings of calls, and sight records with sufficient field notes. Goa has 473 species of birds of which 11 are endemic to the Western Ghats, 19 fall under various categories of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and 48 are listed in Schedule I Part (III) of The Indian Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. 451 species have been accepted into the checklist based on specimens in various museums or on photographs, while 22 have been accepted based on sight record. A secondary list of unconfirmed records is also discussed in detail. Introduction that is about 125 km long. The southern portion of these ghats, Goa, India’s smallest state, sandwiched between the Arabian within Goa, juts out towards the Arabian Sea, at Cabo de Rama, Sea in the west and the Western Ghats in the east, is home to and then curves inland. -

Peg Abbott was the host from Naturalist Journeys, with eight participants: Patrick, Gingy, Bud, Jerry, Judy, Nancy, Judie, and Angela, joined by Sue (inspecting the area for her UK safari company). Birds Gray Francolin (Francolinus pondicerianus) – Heard in Okhla, then seen on a number of days along Chambal River, Bharatpur and Ranthambhore. Red Spurfowl (Galloperdix spadicea) – Seen by Avi and Jerry on our first day in Goa, then seen on the return hike from the water pools where we searched for kingfishers. Painted Spurfowl (Galloperdix lunulata) – Seen twice on safaris in Ranthambhore, both at close range in late-afternoon light as we were heading back. Grey Junglefowl (Gallus sonneratii) – Heard on our first two days in Goa at the Backwoods Camp, then seen by Gingy and a few others as we went to see the frogmouths on their roost perch. Indian Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) – Seen daily, sometimes in good number. We watched males display, and dance play on the iridescent sheen of their feathers in such a variety of settings. What a bird to have as a common bird! Lesser Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna javanica) – First seen on the Chambal River, then in very good numbers at Bharatpur, another few at the Spice Farm in Goa and at a reservoir on Elephanta Island. -
