THE SEALY NEWS THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 2021 SPORTS SEALYNEWS.COM 9 Smidt gets back in the saddle

By COLE McNANNA SPORTSSEALYNEWS.COM

Earlier this month, Bellville’s Caleb Smidt qualified for the American Rodeo Finals by winning the tie-down roping event at the RFD-TV’s The American Semi-Finals with an aggregate time of 16.05 seconds on two. Smidt placed twice in the top six at number one and number three over- all and won more than $10,000 to help punch a ticket to the finals hosted at AT&T Stadium. In the long round of the finals, how- ever, Smidt finished just outside of the threshold to advance to the short round and finished 10th with a time of 10.25 seconds and found the end of the rope there. Smidt missed out on a chance at competing in the 2020 National Finals Rodeo due to a positive COVID-19 test but turned down an exemption invita- tion and instead went the semi-finals route. “For this year’s competition, the American Rodeo extended an exemp- tion invitation to tie-down roper Caleb Smidt and barrel racer Dona Kay Rule,” reported the Cowboy Lifestyle JACK LINK, THE AMERICAN RODEO/RURAL MEDIA GROUP Network. “(Smidt was) unable to par- Bellville’s Caleb Smidt dismounts his horse Pockets during the tie-down roping event at the American Rodeo Semi-Finals in Fort Worth earlier this month. Rule accepted the exemption invitation and (joined) the Top 10 barrel racers in the world to compete for $100,000 at AT&T Stadi- um. Smidt, thankful for the exemption opportunity, decided to turn the invita- tion down and try to make the finals on his own and win a shot at the $1 mil- lion qualifier cash bonus.” After he claimed the tie-down roping championship in the semi-finals, Smidt felt like his decision paid off. “As soon as they told me I’d get an exemption invitation, I just had a feel- ing come over me that told me to keep going the way I was going through the Semi-Finals,” Smidt said in a post-per- formance interview. “To put all my faith in God. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Austin County bladesmith Cowboy Szymanski and Ilene Krupala were recently presented with a check from the Bellville Chamber of Commerce Advertising and Tourism Committee (represented by Tammy Bond, far left, and Toni Franklin, far right) and the Bellville EDC. The check will aid in funding an iHeart Radio promotion for the two-day event, “Texas Select from Forged in Fire.” Cowboy and Ilena, operators of the 1890’s blacksmith shop and Phenix Knives, coordinate the annual show that brings more than 45 past contestants and champions from the History Channel’s “Forged in Fire” to Bellville for a huge event, free to the public the first weekend in April.
