    MALALA IS ONE OF US This Rotarian’s daughter is an unstoppable force for education BY KEVIN COOK he Swat Valley of northern Pakistan, in the highlands between Kashmir and the Khyber Pass, was once a lush, peaceful place. It was ruled by Miangul Abdul Haq Jahanzeb – the Wali, or absolute monarch, of Swat. A modernizer, the Wali built schools for his subjectsT – girls as well as boys – and toured remote regions where no one had ever seen an automobile. On one trip, the villagers tried to feed hay to his Cadillac. Zebu Jilani recalls the land of her childhood: “A beautiful, pristine place where moun- tains climbed to the clouds. Princess Zebu, as Swatis still refer to her, recalls playing with shiny rocks that resembled chunks of green glass. “They were emeralds from my fam- ily’s mines. ” Then, in 1969, Swat relinquished its sov- ereignty to the government of Pakistan. So began a 40-year period of decline that led to the rise of the Taliban in 2008. For two years, the people of Swat endured a reign of terror as the Taliban imposed their brutal version of Islamic law. They rounded up political opponents, beheaded some and flogged others. A PREFACE FROM MALALA’S FATHER It is the elder generation’s duty to teach children the universal human values of truth, fairness, justice and equality. For this purpose, we have two institutions: families and schools. Education, whether at home or in the classroom, has the power to promote acceptance of others’ views and to challenge biases and bigotry. In patriarchal societies, women are expected to be obedient. A good girl should be quiet, humble and submissive. She is told not to question her elders, even if she feels that they are wrong or unjust. As a father, I did not silence Malala’s voice. I encouraged her to ask questions and to demand answers. As a teacher, I also imparted these values to the students at my school. I taught my female students to unlearn the lesson of obedience. I taught the boys to unlearn the lesson of so-called pseudo-honor. It is similarly the obligation of schools and universities to instill the principles of love, respect, dignity and universal humanism in their students. Girls and boys alike must learn to think critically, to stand up for what they believe is right and build an effective and healthy society. And these lessons are taught at schools through curriculum. Curricula teach young people how to be confident individuals and responsible citizens. I Am Malala is a story about a young girl’s campaign for human rights, especially a woman’s right to education.

In this section the intention of the narrative in I Am Malala is written in a short passage presented as a note from Malala who wrote that her purpose for writing I Am Malala. My goal in writing this book was to raise my voice on behalf of the millions of girls around the world who are being denied their right to go to school and realise their potential. I hope my story will inspire girls to raise their voice and embrace the power within themselves, but my mission does not end there. My mission, our mission, demands that we act decisively to educate girls and empower them to change their lives and communities. That is why I have set up the Malala Fund. (Lamb, Yousafzai 2014) This statement confirms that I Am Malala is constructed to further her ambition in sharing her story to empower the voiceless and help the Malala Fund aid children‘s access to an education.

    I AM MALALA: A RESOURCE GUIDE FOR EDUCATORS THEME 3: Cultural Politics, Gender and History in Malala Yousafzai’s I am Malala For more information or to submit feedback about the resource guide, visit malala.gwu.edu. To expand the reach of Malala’s memoir—I am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban—and spread Malala’s message to young people and activists, the Global Women’s Institute (GWI) of the George Washington University (GW), in collaboration with the Malala Fund, developed a resource guide for high school and college students around the world. Building on the content of Malala’s memoir, the resource guide supports global efforts to mobilize women and men to address women’s and girls’ rights to an education. Malala’s memoir opens the door to some of the greatest challenges of our modern world. It is about politics, education, culture, religion and violence against women and girls. It is a moment in the life of a young girl and in the history of a country. To do these broad themes justice, faculty from a wide range of disciplines contributed to the development of the resource guide. The resource guide challenges students to think deeply, share their experiences, and engage with their communities. Each theme is divided into 4 parts: • Part 1 is the narrative with learning objectives to frame the conversation and help plan lessons; • Part 2 lists the resources to help students and teachers deepen their knowledge about the theme; • Part 3 lists individual and group activities, including some to be done outside of class if students are interested; • Part 4 is the high school supplement intended to help high school teachers introduce and discuss some of the concepts and context that appear in the theme narratives.
