Australia

Australia is a country. It is made up of the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania and lots of small islands. It is the sixth biggest country in the world.

Capital City The capital city of Australia is Canberra. It is the eighth biggest city in the country. More than 400,000 people live there. Lake Burley-Griffin was made for the city. The city was built around the lake.

Animals Australia has lots of well known animals. Kangaroos, koalas and kookaburras live there. Lots of deadly snakes and spiders are found there too.

Sport is a big part of Australian culture. Soccer, cricket, swimming and surfing are four popular sports. The city of Melbourne is famous for its big sporting events. It has been called ‘the sporting capital of the world’.

Millions of people go to Australia every year. People like to see the landscapes, animals and sports events. Lots of visitors come from China and New Zealand.

Australia is a country surrounded by the Indian and Pacific oceans. It includes the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania and over 8,000 smaller islands. It is the sixth largest country in the world with an area of over 7.5 million km².

Canberra, which is the eighth biggest city in the country, is the capital city of Australia. It became a city in 1913, and today over 400,000 people live there. It was built around the manmade Lake Burley-Griffin. It is the only city completely planned from scratch in Australia.

Many unique and well known animals live in Australia. Kangaroos, koalas and kookaburras are some of the most popular animals that live there. Most of the world’s most venomous snakes and spiders can be found there too.

Sport is a hugely important part of Australian culture. Soccer, cricket, swimming and surfing are four of the most popular sports that the inhabitants enjoy. The city of Melbourne is famous for hosting many large sporting events so it is now known as ‘the sporting capital of the world’.
