  • Keith Hill on Keith Hill
June 1, 2015, Issue 450 Addressing SaladGate Six pages of in-depth reporting on Women In Country and a post-CRS panel write-up in which Keith Hill urged slashing female- voiced songs made nary a ripple outside the business a few months back. But the consultant’s lettuce-and-tomatoes analogy last week in this space touched off a social and, eventually, major media tidal wave. Go figure. We’ll get to Hill in the next story (right), after female PDs and MDs weigh in with their thoughts on a well-known though still confounding reality. In full disclosure, some of the women we contacted declined to contribute for lack of time or lack of what they felt would be helpful feedback. Some passed because they weren’t comfortable publicly commenting in a “no-win argument.” And some came to us asking to be part of the conversation. Lost In Translation: “I don’t think he phrased what he was trying to say especially well,” says Scripps/ Spark Plug: Big Spark/Star Farm’s Olivia Lane hosts industry Tulsa OM and KVOO PD Jules Riley, whose pros at Handlebar J in Phoenix over the weekend. • THE MUSICAL FEATURES of 2015'S TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS
THE MUSICAL FEATURES OF 2015’s TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS By Mason Taylor Allen Senior Honors Thesis Department of Music University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill April 22, 2016 Approved: Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

  • Any Golden Ears Still Exist?
BRETT ELDREDGE Drunk On Your Love Atlantic (WMN) CONTENTS Any Golden Ears Still Exist? — Charts Dear Readers; In an article in RadioInfo, the following important question was raised...the article was written by Duane Doobie. Here is an excerpt…. You know what’s really missing in today’s contemporary music radio scene? It was an element of the industry that played a key role in radio claiming “ownership” of popular music culture (one of my favorite obsessions) during the many decades that the medium actually occupied that lofty position within the kingdom of the cool. The answer: Broadcasters with a well-earned reputation for having “golden ears.” When this business was clicking on all cylinders, every format of music radio was populated by a healthy smattering of well-known and widely- respected programmers (PDs, MDs, jocks) who were considered by their colleagues in both the radio and record ends of the scene to have “golden ears.” For the uninitiated, that means they were able to spot a hit at first-listening a mile away. Obviously they were not always right – but for the most part they were close to the mark, at least PAGE 2-4 collectively. They were invaluable “bell cows” giving the industry direction. They didn’t NEED “research.” They WERE research. — Chart Breakouts These magical people were the front-line of radio’s penetration into the bubbling, churning, seminal brew of the unfiltered energy field that constitutes the base-level from which all definition, categorization and the hierarchy of PAGE 5-6 “hits” rises in what we consider to be the popular music/cultural scene.
