Head physio talks about England's preparations ahead of the FIFA World Cup England physio Gary Lewin will be speaking at Southampton Solent University on Wednesday 19 March about the national team’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup. “This will be a unique opportunity for our students to learn about England’s preparations from a man who has been at the heart of the team for nearly two decades,” says Dr. Richard Elliott, Associate Professor and Director of the University’s centre for football research. “Gary has experienced multiple major tournaments with England and, with just 85 days to go to the start of the competition, he will set out how the team’s preparations are developing ahead of the June kick off in Brazil.” Gary began his career in football as a young goalkeeper at Arsenal at the age of 16, but after a brief spell at Barnet he trained at Guy's Hospital School of Physiotherapy - returning to Arsenal in 1986 as first-team physiotherapist. He was first-team physio at Arsenal for 22 years, until he became the Head of Physiotherapy to the England Senior Men's Football Team in August 2008. He has been credited with saving limbs and even lives during his career. Gary was first onto the pitch when Chelsea captain John Terry swallowed his tongue when he was hit in the face by Abou Diaby’s foot during a corner in the Arsenal penalty area, possibly saving his life. More recently he was credited by then Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva as saving his foot and career after a broken leg, suffered on 23 February 2008. The pain suffered on that night in Paris by Didier Deschamps’s men and an entire nation remains all the more heartrending because of the newfound professionalism that Les Bleus conducted themselves with throughout the tournament. Karim Benzema antics aside, contrary to years of squad infighting, the team spirit inside the French camp was the strongest it had been since 2000. On the pitch, France proved that they are on the cusp of a new golden generation, with Samuel Umtiti, Kingsley Coman and Antoine Griezmann all shining. Although some of Les Bleus’ much touted young guns fell short of expectations, namely Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial, France’s U19 EURO win further confirms that the future is astonishingly bright for French football on the international scene. One would not be foolish to expect there to be some turnover of talent for the 2018 World Cup cycle, with Patrice Evra and others’ involvement coming to an end. Much like Les Bleus therefore, Ligue 1 too can expect a very different feel for the 2016/17 season. PSG have entered a new era after President Al Khelaifi’s obsession for progression in the Champions’ League failed to be adequately satisfied by Laurent Blanc, leading to the latter’s dismissal. Les Parisiens have appointed Unai Emery in Blanc’s place, who brings a new-age management approach that relies on a squad instead of a team of individuals, a charge often leveled at Blanc’s PSG.

Head physio shares England's preparations ahead of the FIFA World Cup England physiotherapist Gary Lewin shared exclusive insight into the England football team’s preparations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, with sports scientists and physiotherapists of the future at Southampton Solent University. Gary gave a guest lecture to Solent University students studying degrees in health and fitness, personal training, football studies, sports studies and sport science and sport coaching and development. With just nine weeks to go to the start of the competition, he set out how the team’s preparations are developing ahead of the June kick-off in Brazil. As well as exclusive photography and anecdotes of the England squad on and off the pitch during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, he shared some interesting statistics with the students about just what happens behind the scenes in the planning and execution of a major tournament for the England team. Talking after the lecture Gary said, “Working in professional football is highly pressurised. With everything happening live on TV, every decision we make as a physio team is scrutinised by experts from across the globe; but I wouldn’t change it for the world! These students have very exciting careers ahead of them after graduation and I look forward to working with some of them in the future.” Gary was first-team physio at Arsenal for 22 years, until he became the full-time Head of Physiotherapy to the England Senior Men's Football Team in August 2008.
