Armbruster1 Baryancistrus beggini, new species, is described from the upper Rı´o Orinoco and lower portions of its tributaries, the Rı´o Guaviare in Colombia and Rı´o Ventuari in Venezuela. Baryancistrus beggini is unique within Hypostominae in having a uniformly dark black to brown base color with a blue sheen in life, and the first three to five plates of the midventral series strongly bent, forming a distinctive keel above the pectoral fins along each side of the body. It is further distinguished by having a naked abdomen, two to three symmetrical and ordered predorsal plate rows including the nuchal plate, and the last dorsal-fin ray adnate with adipose fin via a posterior membrane that extends beyond the preadipose plate up to half the length of the adipose-fin spine. Copeia 2011, No. 2, 216–225 Two New Genera and Species of Ancistrini (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the Western Guiana Shield Nathan K. Lujan1,2 and Jonathan W. Armbruster1 Two new ancistrin genera and species are described from main channels and tributaries of the upper Orinoco River in Amazonas, Venezuela. Micracanthicus vandragti is black with white spots and distinguished by its small body-size, large gas-bladder capsules, and highly protrusible mandibles with short tooth cups and five to eight long teeth per tooth cup. The known range of Micracanthicus vandragti is restricted to the lower Ventuari River and portions of the Orinoco River near its rocky, anastomose confluence with the Ventuari River. Soromonichthys stearleyi is green with small yellow-gold spots on the head and thin vertical bars on the body and has long dentary and premaxillary tooth cups with 39–69 teeth per tooth cup. It is distinguished by its coloration and by its unique pattern of plate loss on the snout: plates absent from mesethmoid surface and anteriormost margin of snout. Soromonichthys stearleyi is known only from Soromoni Creek, a northern tributary of the upper Orinoco draining southern slopes of Mount Duida. The new species is distinguished from the remaining 18 Hemipsilichthys species by modally having eight branched rays in the dorsal fin (vs. seven branched rays), by possessing a posteriorly expanded dorsal-fin membrane connect- ing the last dorsal-fin ray to the dorsum and, except from H. gobio and H. papillatus,byhaving teeth cusps equal in size (vs. small lateral cusp or unicuspid teeth in both dentary and premaxilla). From H. gobio and H. papillatus it is further distinguished by the larger orbital diameter and by its V-shaped dorsal-fin spinelet. -

Armbruster*** Baryancistrus demantoides and Hemiancistrus subviridis are two new species of loricariids from southern Venezuela with an olive ground coloration and white to cream-colored or golden-yellow spots. Baryancistrus demantoides is known only from the upper río Orinoco drainage while H. subviridis is also known from the río Casiquiare drainage. In addition to its coloration, B. demantoides can be distinguished from all other ancistrins by having the dorsal and adipose fins connected by an expanded posterior section of the dorsal-fin membrane, golden-yellow spots confined to the anterior portion of the body, and greater than 30 teeth per jaw ramus. Hemiancistrus subviridis can be separated from all other ancistrins by coloration, lacking a connection between the dorsal and adipose fins and having less than 30 teeth per jaw raSmus. It can be distinguished from other neoplecostomine genera by the presence of (1) three hypertrophied bicuspid odontodes on the lateral portion of the body (character apparently present in mature males); (2) a large area without odontodes around the snout; (3) a post-dorsal ridge on the cau- dal peduncle; (4) a straight tooth series in the dentary and premaxillary rows; (5) the absence of abdominal plates; (6) a conspicuous series of enlarged papillae just posterior to the dentary teeth; and (7) caudal pe- duncle ellipsoid in cross section. -

Alexander Benjamin Orfinger and Daniel Douglas Goodding (2018) The suckermouth armored catfish genus Pterygoplichthys (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) includes popular aquarium fishes and constitutes one of the most successful freshwater invasive taxa, having achieved global distribution. To date, however, no comprehensive distributional record nor impact assessment exist for the spread of the genus, precluding informed management strategies. To provide these tools, our study aims to (1) provide an annotated checklist of species for this taxonomically confusing genus, (2) survey all available literature on the spread of the genus and summarize and map its invasive distribution, and (3) assess the overall socioeconomic and environmental impact of the genus on a global scale using the Generic Impact Scoring System (GISS). First, we provide an updated annotated species list. We then summarize seventy-one unique invasion records along with twenty-one instances of demonstrated impacts. Species of the genus Pterygoplichthys have now invaded five continents and twenty-one countries, and show an extended range in their native South America. -

Additionally to S. punctatissimus (Steindachner) and S. murinus Nijssen & Isbrücker, three new species are recognized based on the examination of 159 specimens: S. immaculatus n. sp. from rio Tapajós basin, differs from its congeners by its color pattern consisting of a dark gray body, with no dots or spots, and by having very slender teeth; Spectracanthicus tocantinensis n. sp., from the rio Tocantins drainage is distinguished by the color pattern consisting of dark brown or black body with small, yellowish dots (except in S. punctatissimus), presence of thick teeth, infraorbital 4 forming most of the posterior edge of the orbit and the large basipterigium fenestrae; and Spectracanthicus zuanoni n. sp., from the rio Xingu basin is diagnosed by its color pattern consisting of large, white spots and by the larger orbital diameter. Other characters based on osteological features are also usefull to distinguish the species.
