BIOGRAPHY LEONIDAS KAVAKOS VIOLIN The Léonie Sonning Music Prize Winner of 2017 Leonidas Kavakos, was born and brought up in a musical family in Athens. The three important mentors in his life were Stelios Kafantaris, Josef Gingold and Ferenc Rados. By the age of 21, he had already won three of the major competitions, the Sibelius in 1985 and the Paganini and Naumburg in 1988. This success led to his recording of the original Sibelius Violin Concerto (1903/4), the first recording of this work in history, which won the Gramophone Concerto of the Year Award in 1991. Since then, Leonidas Kavakos has worked and developed close relationships with orchestras in Europe such as Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, London Symphony, Gewandhausorchester, Dresden Staatskapelle, Munich Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, Academia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, and in the USA with Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, with whom he will be Artist in Residence for the 2016/17 season, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic. On the 2015/16 season Kavakos toured with the London Philharmonic Orchestra to Spain, with the Bayerischer Rundfunk to the USA and played at the Festivals of Verbier, White Nights, Edinburgh International, Tanglewood, Annecy Classic and Dresdner Musikfestspiele. As a conductor, Leonidas Kavakos has built a strong profile, working with the London and Boston Symphony Orchestras, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Budapest Festival orchestras. In 2015/16 he returned to conduct the Wiener Symphoniker, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Radio France, he will make his debut as conductor with the Bamberg Symphony, Danish National Symphony and Rotterdam Philharmonic. Leonidas Kavakos is an exclusive recording artist of DECCA Classics, his album of the complete Beethoven Violin Sonatas with pianist Enrico Pace from 2013 won the ECHO Klassik Award for “Instrumentalist of the Year”, his following recordings for DECCA have been the Brahms Violin Concerto with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Ricardo Chailly, Brahms Violin Sonatas with pianist Yuja Wang, and in 2016 he released “Virtuoso”. In 2014 he was awarded “Artist of the Year” by Gramophone. Earlier discography with BIS, ECM and Sony Classical, include the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, which won the ECHO Klassik “Best Concerto Recording”, and Mozart’s Violin Concertos, conducting and playing with Camerata Salzburg. During 15 years, Leonidas Kavakos has curated a chamber music cycle at the Megaron Athens Concert Hall and gives an annual violin and chamber-music masterclass in Athens. He plays the “Abergavenny” Stradivarius violin of 1724 and owns modern violins made by F. Leonhard, S.P. Greiner, E. Haahti and D. Bagué.
