Museums ‐ Citizens’ Panel results January 2014 The January 2014 Citizens Panel questionnaire was sent to 2104 Citizens' Panel members. In total 1013 people responded, a 48% response. The ‘Base’ in each table is the number of respondents to that question. Summary The most visited museums in the last 12 months were M Shed (63%) and Bristol Museum and Art Gallery (60%). The least visited were Bristol Regional Environmental Records Centre (2%) and Bristol Record Office (7%). The main things that motivated people to vissit Bristol’s Museums was free entry (79%) and to visit an exhibition (71%). Citizens’ Panellists were most interested in visiting exhibitions on Bristol Local History, Natural science and international art. Events panellists would be most interested in visiting were behind the scenes tours. The main reason people had not visited any of Bristol Museums, Galleries & Archives museums in the past year were they did not have enough time/too busy (43%). 17% of the panel said they could not get to them due to ill health / disability. The majority of the panel (72%) have visited the M Shed. A third of the panel, 32% had not had any friends or relatives stay with them as part of their holiday. 12% had two visitors and 11% had four visitors. Of those who had visitors, 78% said visiting a museum or art gallery might be one of the things they would do during their stay. The Citizenns’ Panel tended to disagree that Bristol’s museums are ‘Old fashioned, unchanging and out of touch’ (64%), or ‘Don’t really care about or understand their audience’ (67%). 46% disagree that they are ‘Used by everyone in the community’. The majority of the panel agree that museums are ‘The best place to discover Bristol's history and treasures’, are ‘Fun for families’, ‘Provide thought provoking and inspirational experiences’, are ‘Places to gain new knowledge or insight’, are ‘Under used and under rated treasure troves’, ‘Provide a public service of the highest quality’, ‘Improve quality of life for people living, working in and visiting Bristol’. Panellists were slightly less inclined to agree that museums are ‘Places to stimulate their own creativity’ and they ‘Explore and debate issues that affect people in Britain today’. The places most of the panel have visited in the llast year are the Watershed, formal or landscaped gardens or parks, Colston Hall and the Bristol Hippodrome. Over half of respondents find out what is on in their local area by picking up leaflets and brochures (55%) and 49% through websites. 46% were recommended by friends or family. The main way people found out about things to do and leisure activities was through a google or internet search (15%) or website (14%). 12% were recommended by friends and family and 8% pick up leaflets and brochures. The majority of the panel (91%) thought it was important or very important to preserve local wildlife. Over half the Citizens’ Panel would visit a museum or art exhibition as it is an enjoyable way to pass the time (66%), to explore local history (61%) and to improve their own knowledge (59%). The main reasons they would visit are it is an enjoyable way to pass the time (18%), to improve their own knowledge (12%) and It's fun way to spend time with friends and family (8%). The Citizenns’ Panel were most aware that Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, M Shed and Blaise Castle House Museum were free to visit.
