  • Bristol Museums Citizens' Panel Report February 2014
    Museums ‐ Citizens’ Panel results January 2014 The January 2014 Citizens Panel questionnaire was sent to 2104 Citizens' Panel members. In total 1013 people responded, a 48% response. The ‘Base’ in each table is the number of respondents to that question. Summary The most visited museums in the last 12 months were M Shed (63%) and Bristol Museum and Art Gallery (60%). The least visited were Bristol Regional Environmental Records Centre (2%) and Bristol Record Office (7%). The main things that motivated people to vissit Bristol’s Museums was free entry (79%) and to visit an exhibition (71%). Citizens’ Panellists were most interested in visiting exhibitions on Bristol Local History, Natural science and international art. Events panellists would be most interested in visiting were behind the scenes tours. The main reason people had not visited any of Bristol Museums, Galleries & Archives museums in the past year were they did not have enough time/too busy (43%). 17% of the panel said they could not get to them due to ill health / disability. The majority of the panel (72%) have visited the M Shed. A third of the panel, 32% had not had any friends or relatives stay with them as part of their holiday. 12% had two visitors and 11% had four visitors. Of those who had visitors, 78% said visiting a museum or art gallery might be one of the things they would do during their stay. The Citizenns’ Panel tended to disagree that Bristol’s museums are ‘Old fashioned, unchanging and out of touch’ (64%), or ‘Don’t really care about or understand their audience’ (67%).

The vision for the revised curriculum is based on making all history enquiry-led with progression in knowledge and key skills and having a strong emphasis on local history (see curriculum map 2015-2016 1.4). Where possible, local fieldwork and inputs from expert visitors have been planned in. Since the introduction of the new curriculum, the history units have been further revised and updated with new innovative units that have been developed by the school staff with expert inputs. These innovative units include, for example, in year 2 a new Darwin enquiry. In year 5 an original enquiry about the role of Bristol in the Chocolate industry is being taught (see Chocolate scheme of work). In year 4, the Roman enquiry has been developed to have a more local focus with reference to Roman remains at Sea Mills and Kings Weston Roman villa. The curriculum is planned to ensure increasing progression in chronological knowledge with an emphasis on local, national and international perspectives. For instance in year 1 and year 2 children focus on British Stuart, Victorian and Edwardian periods. The Brunel enquiry and Edwardian seaside enquiry have a local focus. In KS2, children start to develop an even broader perspective incorporating ancient civilisations from across the world; including Stone Age to Iron Age at y3, Egyptians in y3 and Mayans at year 5. In year 6 they develop their broad chronological knowledge and concepts of change and continuity through the Crime and Punishment over time unit (see Skills Progression 1.3.1 for further detail and History Policy 2.2).

The effects of the current climate crisis will impact on all areas of society. Museums, as trusted public institutions and sites of learning and inspiration, are starting to address their role in the effective communication of climate change. With their multi-disciplinary collections and expertise, museums have the resources to engage audiences with the causes and results of climate change in ways that are positive and affirming, in the face of the frequently negative and frightening narratives in the media. Museum archaeology has so far received little attention in the growing discourse around museums as climate change communicators. This study seeks to investigate the potential for an archaeological voice to be heard in climate change engagement in museums. The connections between archaeology and climate change are explored, in the context of human response to environmental change both in the past and today. Museums as sites for the communication and creation of archaeological knowledge are examined, along with a consideration of the visitor experience, museum objects and constructivist learning in the museum.
