SGL Consulting Group Australia Pty Ltd www.sglgroup.net 1 Online Feedback 1.1 Introduction Residents were invited to provide feedback and comment to the proposed development via an email to Council. A total of 67 written submissions were received. The following provides a copy of each submission is detailed below. A summary of the key themes is detailed in Volume One. Table 1.1 Online Feedback No. Online Comments 1 Date 19 May 2015 Response Has there been any consideration for an indoor/outdoor court? I was thinking of a synthetic surface that could be an outdoor space that could be used by multiple sports, but possibly be closed in so that it is an indoor space. Or, just an outdoor synthetic pitch that could be attached to, and therefore part of, the indoor centre. This could be used by multiple groups and would be a good option to direct soccer clubs in for pre-season to take the pressure off ground usage. 2 Date 28 May 2015 Response I would like to support the plan for a new stadium in Darebin. My daughters play basketball for Shooters and I think having access to facilities such as this would be wonderful. 3 Date 28 May 2015 Response Hi there, I received the letter in the mail and just wanted to write in support of this proposal. As a basketball family my husband currently travels to Albert Park and we have given up taking my son to Collingwood due to the traffic. A closer option would be most welcome. I am sure a local option would increase participation rates, particularly for children's sport. As a girl all the girls I knew played netball but I notice very few at my son's school play - in part I am sure due to the few options available. I am not sure of the best location, however adjacent to the Northcote pool might be good, as non-players could go for a swim or to the gym! There is a parking issue here though, as the car park is already very full. An issue we have when taking our older child to sport is keeping the smaller kids entertained. An outdoor area with seating and a small playground would be an excellent addition to the design. Also, having been to some courts I notice they are very closed and indoorsy with no view to the outside. Is there any reason why these stadiums can't have a wall of glass doors that can be opened to let air in during the hotter months and allow a nice aspect to a view of parkland/nature? It might keep the players calmer. 4 Date 1 June 2015 Response This email is in response to the request for feedback from Darebin Council regarding a proposed multi-sports stadium. I’d like to feedback the following comments: Overall - great fantastic idea, bring it on. Location Near a secondary school would enhance use of the facility and get younger people into sports; It shouldn’t be built near the existing facility on Darebin Rd. Northcote secondary school is close to transport, in the southern area of the Darebin area, has space for such a facility and is in a different location to the existing facility on Darebin Rd. Use – I expect my daughter would use it. I enjoy volleyball and such a local facility could encourage me back into that. Types of facilities – all those listed in the letter inviting feedback. SGL Consulting Group Australia Pty Ltd www.sglgroup.net No. Online Comments could also be considered. Increasing participation rates – the amount of use it will get will depend on the detail – its location, access to public transport, accessibility to those that would use it, its functionality and design, etc. 5 Date 1 June 2015 Response I am a resident of the south western section of Thornbury and rate payer for two residential properties in this area of Darebin. I have paid rates in Darebin for 15 years. I have 3 primary school aged children who collectively are engaged in a range of sports including soccer, Aussie rules football, cricket, netball and basketball. Our family would certainly utilise and benefit from a new sports stadium such as that which is proposed. We are also a family who use bikes and walking to commute to and from our local primary school as well as work and university. We value proximity of our home to facilities that are important to us. I write to strongly oppose the use of Mayer Park for development into an indoor/ outdoor sports stadium. Mayer Park is a valuable outdoor recreational space well used by soccer and cricket clubs, and informally by exercise groups, families, dog walkers and primary school groups, among others. It sits in an environmentally sensitive wedge adjacent to the Merri Creek. Council imposes stringent protective conditions upon residential development adjacent to this area in recognition of its environmental value. Building the stadium on this land would have a number of serious deleterious implications for this part of Darebin. The facility would displace a number of formal sporting clubs. It would also remove access to a number of exercise options for many local residents. Many residents who currently use Mayer Park would not utilise formal basketball /netball courts (e.g. elderly residents). Consequences such as these directly undermine the rationale that such a facility would combat sedentary lifestyles of individuals within the area. Locating a large sports complex in this area would significantly worsen traffic which is already very problematic, particularly along Normanby Avenue where vehicles are regularly backed up at standstill for hundreds of metres at various times during weekdays and weekends already. We understand that council is already aware of concerns from a large number of residents in this area about current inadequate traffic management on Normanby Avenue. However, with alarm we note that the Options Report states that Normanby Ave is "capable of carrying an increased volume of traffic", which indicates an inadequate assessment of this matter has been undertaken. We believe that there could be alternative strategies for improving fitness and activity of local residents by better utilising the space at Mayer Park. These may include installation of one netball/basketball court and/or a half-court for informal/ recreational users to access on an ad hoc basis. No comparable facility exists in this local area. In terms of providing a community focal point, installation of community gardening spaces would be consistent with an environmentally sensitive area such as this. Children's play equipment would also be well utilised by locals, as well as those visiting Mayer Park for sport events. Our strong preference would be that Darebin builds this facility using any of the many under- utilised or disused industrial sites within the south of the municipality. The conversion of public open space into built forms is not desirable and contrary to good urban planning practices. Should the council be determined to develop open space in this way, we would ask that Darebin focus their development decision making upon the other proposed sites which have the advantage of better public transport infrastructure, wider roads, other built sporting facilities adjacent to the site to enable establishment of a sporting hub, and/or abundant adjacent green publicly accessible spaces to continue to accommodate current users of those open park areas. Thank you for the opportunity to present my views about the proposed location for the new sport stadium. We look forward to its eventual opening, and applaud council's initiative in increasing such facilities in our municipality. SGL Consulting Group Australia Pty Ltd www.sglgroup.net No. Online Comments 6 Date 2 June 2015 Response I believe new sports stadiums are a great idea and use would increase once they are built as teams are formed to compete there. I think the best location would be at the park opposite Northland shopping centre. That location is well serviced by public transport (walk from tram / train, and bus interchange across the road).
