2 A REMARKABLE LEGACY n the weeks following the 1991 death of her husband, U.S. Sen. H. John Heinz III, in an air accident, Teresa Heinz was urged by national and Pennsylvania political leaders to seek election to the senator’s seat. She declined. Instead, she became chair of the Howard Heinz Endowment and months later a trustee of the Vira I. Heinz Endowment, devoting herself to building her family’s philanthropic mission, sharpening its strategic focus and leading the process to merge the two endowments.
