Catholic Fiction Writers Last week’s fiction suggestions generated a great deal of interest (two comments) so I am including two more in this week’s bulletin. I am includ- ing books about Catholicism whose authors themselves are interesting. Mark Salzman. Lying Awake. This novel tells the story of Carmelite sister, John of the Cross, who after years of spiritual dryness begins to have visions and experience bursts of creativity. She faces questions of grace, vocation, and faith. This short novel is a fascinating examination of the power of vocation. A Carmelite monastery of cloistered nuns gave Salzman extraordinary access to their way of life and his work is an accurate and respectful depiction of their life. Salzman is not a believer who studied martial arts in China. He has written about teaching writing to adolescent offenders in California and living in China shortly after the cultural revolution. He is a professional cellist who has played with YoYo Ma and is married to an Academy Award-winning documentary director. Rumer Godden. In This House of Brede. This novel tells the story of Philippa Talbot, a successful career woman who leaves her life in the fast lane behind to enter a cloistered Benedictine monastery. The book is an excellent and unromantic description of cloistered life. Yet it is a descrip- tion is of a life of joy and peace, but not that of the outside world. Godden wrote over 60 books Her most well known include The River and Black Narcissus, which were both made into films. Brede was a popular TV series starring Diana Rigg. Godden was raised in India and spent most of her life there, moving back to England with her family after someone tried to poison them. She became a Catholic in 1968 at the age of 61. She won the Whitbread Prize for Children’s Literature was knighted by Queen Elizabeth and died in 1998 at the age of 90. Jeffrey C. Peck Worldwide Marriage Encounter Bingo is Back!
