C. Gottlieb 2017-18 Season of the Yakima Symphony Orchestra, A Musical Voyage Around the World! Each of the six concerts on our YAKIMA VALLEY CLASSICAL SERIES will focus on a different country or region. We begin in the classical music capital of the world, Vienna, with The Austrian Empire. This program will feature music by Mozart, Schubert and Brahms, all of whom were either born in or ended up in Vienna. On Veteran’s Day, we honor our beloved country and all of our veterans with The American Dream. The concert will be filled with patriotic surprises and will include Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess as well as a piece called Ellis Island: The Dream of America by Peter Boyer. This piece for actors and orchestra takes memoirs of actual Ellis Island immigrants from several different countries and sets them to music in a very moving and inspiring way. South of the Border will include music from Mexico, Cuba, Brazil and Argentina and will feature guest violinist David Kim, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, performing The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by the great tango composer Astor Piazzolla. On St. Patrick’s Day, we will present a Celtic Celebration. In addition to Mendelssohn’s classic Symphony No. 3, the “Scottish,” we will present living Irish composer Shaun Davey’s The Brendan Voyage. This is an epic work for bagpiper and orchestra that retells the ancient legend of 6th-century Irish Saint Brendan’s crossing of the Atlantic to the Americas in a leather kayak. When in Rome features two masterworks by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, The Pines of Rome and The Fountains of Rome. It also will include pieces written by non-Italians while on holiday in Italy. Specifically, we will perform Tchaikovsky’sCapriccio italien and Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 featuring the Italian pianist Roberto Plano, Gold Medal Winner of the Cleveland International Piano Competition. We will conclude the Classical Series with Back in the U.S.S.R. This program will include Shostakovich’s brilliant Symphony No. 5 and will feature the Yakima Symphony Chorus; Justin Raffa, chorusmaster, on Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky. This is one of the very few film scores that have found a permanent place in the standard orchestral repertoire. Our five-concert GILBERT ORCHARDS POPS SERIES will be filled with excitement and variety. We start with a Mexican Celebration featuring one of the premiere Mariachi bands of the world, Mariachi Champaña Nevín. We will then present our traditional family-style Halloween Spooktacular. Everyone is encouraged to come in costume and join in the fun. We will share the stage with the Yakima Symphony Chorus for our annual Holiday Pops Spectacular, this year featuring the Yakima Children’s Choir. In February, we explore The Magical Music of Harry Potter as we perform highlights from each of the eight films in the iconic series. Come dressed as your favorite Harry Potter character! Finally, we close out the Pops Series with Classical Night Fever. Pull out your polyester and platform shoes for this exhilarating journey through some of the top disco hits of the 1970s with the “ultimate disco tribute band,” Motor Booty Affair! We are very excited about this season and look forward to having you join us on A Musical Voyage Around the World! Sincerely, Lawrence Golan The Helen N.
