CLASSICAL SERIES Will Focus on a Different Country Or Region Yakima Symphony Orchestra lawrence golan • the helen n. jewett music director the rosemary a. c. gottlieb 2017-18 season A Musical Voyage Around the World Dear Friends and Supporters of the Yakima Symphony Orchestra: Welcome to the Rosemary A. C. Gottlieb 2017-18 Season of the Yakima Symphony Orchestra, A Musical Voyage Around the World! Each of the six concerts on our YAKIMA VALLEY CLASSICAL SERIES will focus on a different country or region. We begin in the classical music capital of the world, Vienna, with The Austrian Empire. This program will feature music by Mozart, Schubert and Brahms, all of whom were either born in or ended up in Vienna. On Veteran’s Day, we honor our beloved country and all of our veterans with The American Dream. The concert will be filled with patriotic surprises and will include Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess as well as a piece called Ellis Island: The Dream of America by Peter Boyer. This piece for actors and orchestra takes memoirs of actual Ellis Island immigrants from several different countries and sets them to music in a very moving and inspiring way. South of the Border will include music from Mexico, Cuba, Brazil and Argentina and will feature guest violinist David Kim, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, performing The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by the great tango composer Astor Piazzolla. On St. Patrick’s Day, we will present a Celtic Celebration. In addition to Mendelssohn’s classic Symphony No. 3, the “Scottish,” we will present living Irish composer Shaun Davey’s The Brendan Voyage. This is an epic work for bagpiper and orchestra that retells the ancient legend of 6th-century Irish Saint Brendan’s crossing of the Atlantic to the Americas in a leather kayak. When in Rome features two masterworks by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, The Pines of Rome and The Fountains of Rome. It also will include pieces written by non-Italians while on holiday in Italy. Specifically, we will perform Tchaikovsky’sCapriccio italien and Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 featuring the Italian pianist Roberto Plano, Gold Medal Winner of the Cleveland International Piano Competition. We will conclude the Classical Series with Back in the U.S.S.R. This program will include Shostakovich’s brilliant Symphony No. 5 and will feature the Yakima Symphony Chorus; Justin Raffa, chorusmaster, on Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky. This is one of the very few film scores that have found a permanent place in the standard orchestral repertoire. Our five-concert GILBERT ORCHARDS POPS SERIES will be filled with excitement and variety. We start with a Mexican Celebration featuring one of the premiere Mariachi bands of the world, Mariachi Champaña Nevín. We will then present our traditional family-style Halloween Spooktacular. Everyone is encouraged to come in costume and join in the fun. We will share the stage with the Yakima Symphony Chorus for our annual Holiday Pops Spectacular, this year featuring the Yakima Children’s Choir. In February, we explore The Magical Music of Harry Potter as we perform highlights from each of the eight films in the iconic series. Come dressed as your favorite Harry Potter character! Finally, we close out the Pops Series with Classical Night Fever. Pull out your polyester and platform shoes for this exhilarating journey through some of the top disco hits of the 1970s with the “ultimate disco tribute band,” Motor Booty Affair! FOR THE TERM OF HIS NATURAL LIFE… PLUS SEVENTY YEARS: MAPPING AUSTRALIA’S PUBLIC DOMAIN CATHERINE MICHELLE BOND A THESIS SUBMITTED IN FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY FACULTY OF LAW UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES FEBRUARY 2010 ABSTRACT This Thesis considers the concept of the ‘public domain’ and whether such a space exists, or has the capacity to exist, under Australian copyright law. Rather than the bulk of public domain literature that presumes that the public domain is an intrinsically valuable space, the Thesis commences from the premise that the role and history of a national public domain must be examined before any judgment on its benefit can be made. Therefore it seeks to situate the public domain by referring to solely Australian issues of constitutional and copyright law, from the enactment of the first colonial copyright statutes through to the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth). The Thesis begins with an evaluation of two doctrines of the Australian Constitution: section 51(xviii), which provides the Federal Parliament power to make laws with respect to ‘copyrights’; and the implied guarantee of freedom of political communication, the only doctrine guaranteeing any form of freedom of expression in the Constitution. This discussion examines whether there has been or is any role for the public domain within these doctrines. Following this constitutional analysis, the focus of this research turns to an evaluation of the copyright laws passed in the pre-Federation colonies through to today and the standing of the public domain under these statutes. Both the specifics of a number of the provisions contained in these statutes and the social history surrounding the passing of these laws are analysed to create a greater understanding of the role and standing of the public domain from pre-Federation Australia to the present day.

tableaux were selected from the surpassingly rich history of Glastonbury and district. Glastonbury stands out as one of the most interesting districts in the West of England in the matter of historical associations, and this week most successful endeavour was made to "reconstruct" these early and Mediaeval pictures for the benefit of the modern spectator. From the time of Joseph of Arimathaea down through the subsequent centuries there is presented a rich field for the genius of the artist in historical reproduction; and the inhabitants of Butleigh arid the neighbourhood have covered themselves with distinction in turning this abundant material to the best possible account in the organisation of tableaux, which seemed to annihilate time and transport the spectator back into those dim and romantic ages when the famous thorn blossomed, when King Arthur and Queen Guinevere were living personages, and when Dane, and Saxon, and Norman were the picturesque figures on the great and bustling stage of life. Stand, stage and spectators all gone and the Court returns to its slumbers 251 The following newspaper ‘clippings’ are in approximate chronological order 3) Uncertain Review 19th June 1906 (Local) SOMERSET VILLAGE PAGEANT Never was village pageant more picturesque than the revel at Butleigh yesterday. Stimulated by the example of Sherborne, the villagers were stirred with the desire to present the events of their own historic neighbourhood, to set forth the glorious past of Glastonbury and the Vale of Avalon. The Sherborne pageant was, perhaps, more gorgeous, but it was in its simplicity that the chief charm of yesterday's revel lay.

To hear about our latest releases subscribe to the Planet PDF Newsletter. For the Term of His Natural Life DEDICATION TO SIR CHARLES GAVAN DUFFY My Dear Sir Charles, I take leave to dedicate this work to you, not merely because your nineteen years of political and literary life in Australia render it very fitting that any work written by a resident in the colonies, and having to do with the history of past colonial days, should bear your name upon its dedicatory page; but because the publication of my book is due to your advice and encouragement. The convict of fiction has been hitherto shown only at the beginning or at the end of his career. Either his exile has been the mysterious end to his misdeeds, or he has appeared upon the scene to claim interest by reason of an equally unintelligible love of crime acquired during his experience in a penal settlement. Charles Reade has drawn the interior of a house of correction in England, and Victor Hugo has shown how a French convict fares after the fulfilment of his sentence. But no writer—so far as I 2 of 898 For the Term of His Natural Life am aware—has attempted to depict the dismal condition of a felon during his term of transportation. I have endeavoured in ‘His Natural Life’ to set forth the working and the results of an English system of transportation carefully considered and carried out under official supervision; and to illustrate in the manner best calculated, as I think, to attract general attention, the inexpediency of again allowing offenders against the law to be herded together in places remote from the wholesome influence of public opinion, and to be submitted to a discipline which must necessarily depend for its just administration upon the personal character and temper of their gaolers.

This paper focuses on the descriptive analysis of the cultural content portrayed in English textbooks used in secondary schools in Argentina. Along this piece of research, it is possible to notice that the cultural elements neither foster students’ critical thinking nor offer them the possibility to analyze in depth their own and others culture.

  • The Lived Experience of the Popular Music Festival-Goer
THE LIVED EXPERIENCE OF THE POPULAR MUSIC FESTIVAL-GOER CAROLINE JACKSON A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Bournemouth University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy JULY 2014 BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY Copyright Statement This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with its author and due acknowledgement must always be made of the use of any of the material contained in, or derived from, this thesis. ABSTRACT The lived experience of the popular music festival-goer Caroline Jackson This study provides an in-depth understanding of the lived experience of people that attended a popular music festival in the UK. The research is grounded in the philosophical roots of both experience and descriptive phenomenology. Phenomenological research is about “going back to people’s specific experiences and letting the concepts come from there” (Todres and Holloway 2010, p183). The research used Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological method (1985, 2009). Giorgi’s method is based on the early twentieth century philosopher Husserl’s scientific approach to developing phenomenology. Giorgi (2009) offers a robust process for analysing situated experiences that gives a clear insight into a phenomenon. Ten interviews with festival-goers who went to the Isle of Wight Festival in June 2011 were conducted. Using Giorgi’s method, the participants’ words were transformed into meaning units, which then underwent a process of descriptive analysis. This involved scientific phenomenological reduction using free imaginative variation. The constituent parts of the experience were identified and used to set out, what Husserl (1982 [1925]) defines as the morphological essence of the experience.

The piece challenges inequities in the juvenile justice system by depicting, through documentation and reenactment, the stories of five individuals who are serving a natural life sentence (Life Without Parole) for crimes they committed as juveniles1. Fear of juvenile crime has in recent years violated the fundamental ideas upon which juvenile court rests, and specifically, the belief in children’s unique capacity for rehabilitation and change.
