7 BRASS CAR SIDES 7 Passenger Car Parts for the Streamliners CANADIAN NATIONAL AND VIA "EASTPORT" SERIES PULLMAN-STANDARD 8 DUPLEX ROOMETTE, 4 BEDROOM, 4 SECTION LIGHTWEIGHT SLEEPING CARS (PLAN 4124A) [Part No. 173-38] When CN placed its enormous order for lightweight cars with Pullman-Standard in October, 1952, it committed itself to 52 cars in the "Eastport" series, (CN 1110-1161). The 8-4-4 mix of accommodations had first appeared in the 1947 GN Empire Builder "Pass" series, but open sections were of limited popularity by 1954 when these CN pullmans were delivered. The longevity of these cars in CN and VIA service is attested to by the fact that some of the class were the only ex-CN sleepers still running on the few steam-heated VIA trains in 1994. The April, 1955 Official Guide shows these cars assigned to the Continental Ltd., Inter-City Ltd., pool trains, Nos. 45-46, the Northland, Nos. 193-194, Nos. 211- 212, and other trains. (This writer recalls riding in the bedroom of an "E" sleeper on the Super Continental from Vancouver to Jasper to Winnipeg in 1972.) BRASS CAR SIDES is pleased to offer these sides with the research assistance of Canadian modelers Al Lill, Robin Lowrie, Stafford Swain, and Lloyd Perkins. Features unique to these cars or not previously incorporated in our PS sides include the recesses behind the horizontal grabirons, space for fixed steps, lighted car number indicators, and the stretcher window. We also produce sides for the CN "Green" 6-6-4, 18-roomette "South", 17-roomette "West", 4-4-2 "Cove", 22-roomette "Val" PS sleepers, and the CCF-built CN 5437-5654 coaches. -
Regional Geology of the Scotian Basin
REGIONAL GEOLOGY OF THE SCOTIAN BASIN David E. Brown, CNSOPB, 2008 INTRODUCTION The Scotian Basin is a classic passive, mostly non-volcanic, conjugate margin. It represents over 250 million years of continuous sedimentation recording the region's dynamic geological history from the initial opening of the Atlantic Ocean to the recent post-glacial deposition. The basin is located on the northeastern flank of the Appalachian Orogen and covers an area of approximately 300,000 km2 with an estimated maximum sediment thickness of about 24 kilometers. The continental-size drainage system of the paleo-St. Lawrence River provided a continuous supply of sediments that accumulated in a number of complex, interconnected subbasins. The basin's stratigraphic succession contains early synrift continental, postrift carbonate margin, fluvial-deltaic-lacustrine, shallow marine and deepwater depositional systems. PRERIFT The Scotian Basin is located offshore Nova Scotia where it extends for 1200 km from the Yarmouth Arch / United States border in the southwest to the Avalon Uplift on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland in the northeast (Figure 1). With an average breadth of 250 km, the total area of the basin is approximately 300,000 km2. Half of the basin lies on the present-day continental shelf in water depths less than 200 m with the other half on the continental slope in water depths from 200 to >4000 m. The Scotian Basin formed on a passive continental margin that developed after North America rifted and separated from the African continent during the breakup of Pangea (Figure 2). Its tectonic elements consist of a series of platforms and depocentres separated by basement ridges and/or major basement faults. -

Unauthorized duplication or distribution is strictly prohibited. Introduction The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) has always been a symbol of Canada's nation-building experience. Poets, musicians, politicians, historians, and writers have lauded the railway as one of the country's greatest achievements. Indeed, the transcontinental railway was a remarkable accomplishment: its managers, engineers, and workers overcame incredible obstacles to throw the iron track across seemingly impenetrable bogs and forests, expansive prairies, and nearly impassable mountains. The cost in money, human energy, and lives was enormous. Completed in 1885, the CPR was one of the most important instruments by which fledgling Canada realized a vision implicit in the Confederation agreement of 1867-the building of a nation from sea to sea. In the fulfilment of this dream, the CPR, and subsequently the Canadian Northern and Grand Trunk systems, allowed the easy interchange of people, ideas, and goods across a vast continent; they permitted the settlement of the Western interior and the Pacific coast; and they facilitated the integration of Atlantic Canada with the nation's heartland. In sum, by expediting commercial, political, and cultural intercourse among Canada's diverse regions, the transcontinentals in general, and the CPR in particular, strengthened the nation. Historiography The first scholarly historical analysis of the Canadian Pacific Railway was Harold Innis's A History of the Canadian Pacific Railway. In his daunting account of contracts, passenger traffic, freight rates, and profits, he drew some sweeping conclusions. -

Modern day executive committees and their near equivalents can trace their roots back to a political institution – the Board of Control at the beginning of the last century and to the then lingering effects of the American Reform Movement on the politics and administration of local governments. The Reform Movement emphasized efficiency in local government by promoting non-partisanship, at large elections and especially administrative professionalism, which in turn meant a large reliance on professional expertise in the provision of services. This strengthening of the municipal bureaucracy raised the questions of political control and accountability. Council members felt inadequate in developing policy in the face of the expertise of the administrators. To counterbalance the latter, the reformers proposed the creation of a political body – the Board of Control. It was meant to be a political collective mechanism and had specific legislative and executive functions. -

<:;an..adi J~mnn Number 162 / Janua r y 1965 Cereal box coupons and soap package enclosures do not general ly excite much enthusiasm from the editor of 'Canadian Rail', but we must admit we are looking forward with some eagerness to comp leting our collection of RAILWAY MUGS currently being distribut e d by the Quaker Oats Company, in their specially-marked packages of Quaker Oats. This series of twelve hot chocolate mugs depicts the develop - ment of the steam locomotive in Canada from the 0-6-0 "Samson", to the CPR 2-10-4 #8000. The mugs are being offered by the Quaker Oats Company of Cana da to salute Canada's Centennial, and the part played by the rail ways and their steam locomotives in furthering the pro ~ ress of the nation. Each cup pictures an authentic locomotive design -- one shows a Canadian Northern 2-8-0, a type of locomotive that made a major contribution to the country's prairie economy by moving grain from the Western provinces to the Lakehead -- another shows one of the Canadian Pacific's ubiquitous D-10 engines. There are 12 different locomotives in the series - each a col lector's item. The reproductions are precisely etched in decora tive colours and trimmed with 22k gold. The comparatively short train, the small number of passengers, an excellent display by Mother Nature and an excel- lent performance by that noble steel steed, No. 6218, combined to make the event an enjoyable one, not only for the passengers but also for the trip committee. A subsidiary factor but, unfortunately, an important one , was that it lost a considerable amount of money for the Association, and while the purpose of our excursions has never been to make a profit per se, it is reasonable that an attempt be made to avoid loss. In de fense of the Trip Committee, however, it should be said tha t the fall trip deficit was more than offset by a profit on the spring excursion to Essex Junction SO that, taking 1966 operations as a whole, there is a "black" balance. This would not have been, however, had it not been for the spontan eous generosity of the 470 Railroad Club of Portland, Maine, and its dedicated and magnanimous Treasurer and Clerk of Corporation, our good friend Mr. J. Emmons Lancaster. No. 6218 was shared with the Portland club on the October 1/2 weekend, and this sharing made the inevitable large fixed costs of supplying the locomotive and operating it over such a long mileage, less of a burden on both the Portland club and ourselves. The Portland group had a tremendous turnout of passengers, over eight hundred in fact, in contrast to slightly more than one hundred adventurous souls who supported our own trip. -

COUNTRY NOTE ON FISHERIES MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS -- CANADA 1. Overview of Canadian Fisheries 1. Canada has traditionally benefited from the abundant fisheries resources in some of the world’s most productive marine and freshwater systems. These rich fisheries resources have maintained an important fishing industry that provides employment and supports the livelihood of hundreds of small communities in coastal areas. 2. In addition, there is a large recreational fisheries sector comprised of some 3.6 million anglers with annual expenditures of close to CAD 4.7 billion exclusively on sport fishing activities and investments. Furthermore, fishing has been entrenched in the daily life of Canadian aboriginal people in more than 300 First Nations who participate in fisheries for food, social and ceremonial purposes. 3. Aside from capture fisheries, aquaculture has been growing rapidly in Canada. In 1986, the total farm gate value of aquaculture was CAD 35 million. By 2000, production had increased to CAD 600 million, of which 81% was salmon. Trout, mussels and oysters are also major aquaculture species. 4. Canada’s commercial fisheries operate in three broad regions - along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and inland (mainly near the Great Lakes and Lake Winnipeg). The last decade has seen major changes in the Canadian commercial fisheries on both coasts. The collapse of the Atlantic groundfishery in the early 1990s and the subsequent failure of Pacific salmon fishery in the mid-1990s -- the two traditional staple species in the Atlantic and Pacific fisheries respectively -- have completely changed the landscape of the Canadian fishing industry. 5. The rapid expansion of shrimp and crab fisheries along with continuing strong price performance for shellfish in general, have not only made shellfish the most dominant sector on the Atlantic coast but also brought the overall landed value past the historical record prior to the groundfish moratoria. -
