Abstract The complete list of Canarian marine decapods (last update by González & Quiles 2003, popular book) currently com- prises 374 species/subspecies, grouped in 198 genera and 82 families; whereas the Cape Verdean marine decapods (now fully listed for the first time) are represented by 343 species/subspecies with 201 genera and 80 families. Due to changing environmental conditions, in the last decades many subtropical/tropical taxa have reached the coasts of the Canary Islands. Comparing the carcinofaunal composition and their biogeographic components between the Canary and Cape Verde ar- chipelagos would aid in: validating the appropriateness in separating both archipelagos into different ecoregions (Spalding et al. 2007), and understanding faunal movements between areas of benthic habitat. The consistency of both ecoregions is here compared and validated by assembling their decapod crustacean checklists, analysing their taxa composition, gath- ering their bathymetric data, and comparing their biogeographic patterns. Four main evidences (i.e. different taxa; diver- gent taxa composition; different composition of biogeographic patterns; different endemicity rates) support that separation, especially in coastal benthic decapods; and these parametres combined would be used as a valuable tool at comparing biotas from oceanic archipelagos. -

Box 9517, NL-2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands 3) Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht, de Bosquetplein 6-7, NL-6211 KJ Maastricht, The Netherlands ABSTRACT The sponge crab Dromia neogenica Müller, 1979 (Dromiidae) is recorded for the first time from strata of Neogene (late Miocene-early Pliocene) age in the southern North Sea Basin, on the basis of two concretion-preserved carapaces from Bemmel (north of Nijmegen, province of Gelderland, The Netherlands). The presence of this species, which was previously known from the middle-upper Miocene of Hungary and Algeria, suggests relatively higher seawater temperatures in the North Sea during the late Miocene-early Pliocene. Morphological differences (extraorbital and anterolateral teeth, development of cervical and branchiocardiac grooves) between D. neogenica and extant D. personata (Linnaeus, 1758) are relatively minor. This observation, coupled with the absence of the former species in mid-Pliocene and younger strata, and with the robust record of the latter in the mid-Pliocene to upper Pleistocene of Italy, would indicate that D. neogenica and D. personata are closely related, and probably represent the same lineage. RÉSUMÉ La dromie éponge Dromia neogenica Müller, 1979 (Dromiidae) est signalée pour la premiére fois dans les strates du Néogène (fin du Miocène-début du Pliocène) du sud du bassin de la mer du Nord. -

Box 712, Anavissos, 19013, Greece Received: 21 November 2011 Accepted after revision: 5 June 2012 The list of decapod and stomatopod crustacean fauna of Rhodes island (SE Aegean Sea, Eastern Mediterranean Sea) is updated, with the addition of 14 decapods and one stomatopod collected during the last six years. The occurrence of the pelagic crab Planes minutus is recorded for the first time in the Hellenic waters, while the finding of the species Parasquilla ferussaci, Paractaea monodi, Paragalene longicrura and Spinolambrus macrochelos, rarely captured in the Mediter- ranean Sea, is documented in detail, with notes on their geographical distribution. The crus- taceans recorded around the island number today 109 decapod and 4 stomatopod species. About 16% of them is composed of alien species, mostly entered the South Aegean during the last two decades. A comparison between the decapod fauna of Rhodes and neighboring areas is also pre- sented. Key words: Decapoda, Stomatopoda, distribution, alien species, Eastern Mediterranean Sea. [email protected] RESUMEN Hasta ahora, la subfamilia Pisinae Dana, 1851 estaba representada en las costas caribeñas de Venezuela por seis especies [Chorinus heros (Herbst, 1790); Libinia ferreirae Brito Capello, 1871; Herbstia depressa Stimpson, 1870; Sphenocarcinus corrosus A . Milne-Edwards, 1878; Pelia mutica (Gibbes, 1850) y Nibilia antilocapra (Stimpson, 1871)], que representan 38 % de los cangrejos de esta subfamilia señalados para el mar Caribe . Durante una revisión de material pendiente de identificar perteneciente a la colección de crustáceos del Laboratorio de Carcinología de la Universidad de Oriente, Isla de Margarita, Venezuela, fueron hallados nueve especímenes (seis machos y tres hembras) de Apiomithrax violaceus (A . Milne-Edwards, 1868) . La distribución hasta ahora conocida de este Pisinae estaba circunscrita a Mauritania hasta Angola en el Atlántico oriental, Isla Ascensión en el Atlántico central, Brasil y el Delta del Orinoco en el Atlántico occidental . Todos los ejemplares fueron colectados en aguas marinas venezolanas en las siguientes localidades: Isla de Margarita: Playa Valdés, península de Macanao; Estado Sucre (área continental): Guayacán . Este es el registro más septentrional de la especie y la primera vez en ser señalada para el mar Caribe, incrementando a 17 el número de especies de Pisinae conocidas para esta área . -

FLAGELLA Dipartimento di Biologia Animale e dell’Uomo, Via Accademia Albertina 17, 10123 Torino, Italy e-mail: [email protected] Abstract Based on larval literature, an identification key has been constructed for the megalopae of 55 species of Mediterranean Brachyura. This key is based mainly on external morphological characteristics visible, by using a microscope, limiting the necessity for dissection of specimens. Characteristics used include presence/absence of ornamentation on the carapace, number of abdominal somites, number and position of setae and/or spines on antennula, antenna, pereiopods and structure of uropods, etc. Partial dissection is only required to count the setae on the scaphognathite margin. Using the above characters, it is also possible to gather almost all the families into groups. However, the megalopae of Portunidae as well as those of the three species of Brachynotus genus are similar to each other and their identification at a specific level requires the use of features somehow variable and difficult to count. In the Majidae, the megalopae of 14 species are already known. The complexity of morphological characters typical of this family makes it difficult to define characters common to all spider crab megalopae. Nevertheless, the key may be an aid for carcinology studies, especially those including sorting and identification of megalopae from plankton samples. BOSGHMA Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden From time to time crabs have been found in localities at great distances from their normal area of distribution, owing to their being transported by ships in ballast water tanks or on the hulls. Much attention has been paid to a report by Catta (1876), who examined the Crustacea taken from the hull of a ship that had made the voyage from India to Marseilles. Among these, four species of crabs of the family Grapsidae were represented, one of which, named by him Plagusia squamosa, being present in hundreds of specimens. Catta saw here the possibility of an extension of the area of distribution of the crab, but apparently the conditions of life were not favourable in the new locality, and the crab did not become established here. Stebbing (1893: 99) remarks that the correct name of the crab referred to above is Plagusia depressa (Fabricius) and adds that "The point of special interest, however, lies, as Catta explains, in showing the effects on distribution that may be produced by unconscious human agency." The data mentioned above were recorded again by Chilton (1911). According to Bennett (1964: 87) lists as given by Stebbing and Chilton of species transported on the hulls of ships are not lists of accidental acclimatisations, for it does not follow that the crabs could establish themselves in their new homes. Another case of unsuccessful transport of a crab to a new locality is the record of great numbers of Pilumnus spinifer H.
