But he w asn ’ t going t o settle f or f ourth. Scha tz caugh t Ta tnell with 12 laps t o go and then pulled off a maneuv er tha t br ough t the huge partisan cr o w d t o its f eet. C oming off Turn 2 and not w an ting t o br eak his momen tum on the high side of the half-mile o v al, Scha tz sta y ed high, Ta tnell do v e lo w and the y split Joe y Saldana on the backstr et ch. Scha tz gr abbed the position going in t o Turn 3 and set his sigh ts on Me y ers .

P aulus and Me y ers had been smoothly cr uising along thr ough tr affic while Scha tz w as making quick w ork of the field . Scha tz poked the nose of his car under Me y ers a c ouple of times , e v en tually getting side-b y-side with thr ee t o go , but Me y ers w as able t o f end him off each time as Ta tnell began t o close the gap t o secur e f ourth. T hose f our — P aulus , Me y ers , Scha tz and Ta tnell — will start in the t op f our positions Sa tur da y in the S tacker 2® D ash.

“ Ob viously w e ’r e r acing t o win, but w e ’r e not str essed out ,” said P aulus , a Mean 15 r ac er fr om Mechanicsbur g , P a. “It’s all about being c onsist en t and bringing home good sta ts because w e had such a pitiful start t o the season. If w e keep r unning in the t op- fiv e w e can get ourselv es back in t o the t op 10 in poin ts and w e can salv age a dec en t season out of this .

“You ’ v e got S t e v e Kinser who is fast e v ery nigh t. Jason Me y ers is ha ving a st orybook y ear. I’m happ y t o see him r unning the w a y he ’s r unning . To kno w tha t he r an righ t behind us , it just lets me kno w tha t w e ’ v e actually been r eally fast if w e ’r e ahead of him because he ’s one of the benchmark cars this season t o be w a t ching f or.”

P aulus also has bec ome a driv er t o w a t ch. T he car he used t o win F rida y, which has 62 r ac es on it and a 4-y ear-old mot or, also w on Tuesda y a t Huset’s S peed w a y and June 1 a t Rolling W heels Rac ew a y P ark. Ho w e v er, his sec ond car is just as good , posting fiv e t op- fiv es in only eigh t r ac es .

F or Jason Me y ers , a thr ee-time winner this season fr om C lo vis , C alif ., who has ba ttled his w a y t o sec ond in poin ts , his r unner-up finish locks him in t o the S tacker 2® D ash on the sec ond nigh t of an e v en t f or the first time this season.

“It’s just gr ea t t o be locked in,” Me y ers said . “I had a gr ea t car, the guy s did a good job and this Don Ott-mot or r an gr ea t. It w as har d t o pass la t e in the r ac e , but with all the r ain w e got this w eek I think the y did a gr ea t job getting the r ac e in.”

Scha tz w as clearly the driv er the cr o w d w as f ocused on, and he w as easy t o f ollo w as he slic ed thr ough the field .

“It’s fun f or us ,” said Scha tz, who has 16 t op-10s this y ear. “W e c ome her e and w an t t o do the best perf ormanc e w e can. Ob viously, w e did bett er than w e ha v e been doing . To ha v e tha t kind of support is a w arm f eeling f or us . W e kno w w e ’ v e got the homet o wn cr o w d and support and tha t’s r eally wha t w e w an t. T his is our job and our passion and it’s supposed t o be fun, as w ell, and when w e see tha t support it makes it a lot mor e fun.

“W e ha v en ’ t been locked in f or a r ac e in so long tha t it’s har d t o belie v e . W e w er e actually pr etty dec en t. You ’ v e got t o cr a wl bef or e y ou can w alk, and t onigh t w e cr a wled , t omorr o w w e ’r e going t o w alk.”

“I though t w e had something f or Jason ther e f or a little bit , but w e got t o the poin t wher e w e both almost c ollided with a lapped car and Scha tz got b y us and tha t w as the end of the ballgame ,” Ta tnell said . “I w an t t o go and r ac e t o win, but ther e c omes a poin t in time when y ou ha v e t o look a t being smart and ec onomical, get locked in and make amends t omorr o w nigh t.”
