Browning To explore the concept of the medieval labyrinth as a spiritual tool generating the phenomenon of transformational spiritual experience as found in the Reverend Dr. Lauren Artress’ Theater of Enlightenment, seven labyrinth ritual performances were created and thirty-two participants were interviewed. The central argument is that ritual and performance both share the concept of spirit—a developing consciousness towards self-knowledge, which is the journey to wholeness. Explaining the what, why, where, and how of phenomena occurring in performance is the work of performance studies. Situating the labyrinth as liminal performance, the phenomena of transforming spiritual experiences are explored. Chosen to generate theory, grounded theory methodology involved: vii developing categories and themes inductively rather than imposing classifications on the data; analyzing interview narratives of subjects’ spiritual experiences; and formulating a set of relational statements as labyrinth ritual performance theory. Using an outdoor medieval labyrinth and an indoor portable canvas labyrinth modeled after the Chartres labyrinth and built by artisans from Artress’ non- profit, Veriditas, thirty-one subjects perceive they had spiritual experiences: (1) relating to the Divine—God, Goddess, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, Spirit, Essence, or the Universe; (2) finding Self—inner knowing, inner Self, life-force, or center of Self; (3) walking a sacred space—demarcated space for meditation, design of ancestral tradition, or historical Christian tradition; (4) gaining meaning— intellectual and emotional clarity of events, life-plans, problems, or situations; and/or (5) creating intention—co-creation with energy forms or the natural world. The three stages of the labyrinth path mark where change occurs while emotions, appreciations, motivations, values, and attitudes mark what changes. How change occurs involves contextual, causal, and intervening conditions; actions/interactions; and consequences that parallel the continuum of Krathwohl’s taxonomy in the affective domain. Individual stories emerge around themes of spiritual, personal, and/or social development. This study contributes to performance studies in exploring what ritual does to the performer by way of thought, action, emotions, the senses, space, time, embodiment, and agency. The original building was a keeper’s cottage which belonged to the local large estate in the late 18th century. As example of these connections, it introduces ethnographic data from women who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in order to show (a) how living LDS women adapt and integrate elements from the New Spirituality with Mormon ideas about the nature of reality into hybrid spiritualities; and (b) how they negotiate their blended religious identities both in relation to the current American New Spirituality milieu and the highly centralized, hierarchical, and patriarchal Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The study focuses on religious hybridity with an emphasis on gender and the negotiation of power deriving from patriarchal religious authority, highlighting the dance between institutional power structures and individual authority. Understanding the difference between science and pseudoscience is critical for students at younger ages as their definitions of these concepts can impact their understanding of the process of science. For example, most major newspapers across the world have sections on astrology on which individuals might base their daily and yearly decisions—such as when to ask for a raise—on these pseudoscientific ideas. Another example is the use of the unscientific technique of dowsing to find groundwater, in which people pay dowsers to find water on their land for a water well. Since dowsing does not work, the landowners actually pay for someone to randomly choose a spot they should dig a well. It is important for students to understand how to evaluate evidence to determine whether or not they are engaging in science or pseudoscience as their decisions may depend on it. Introduction Chapter 4, “The Uniqueness of Domain-Specific Inductive Logics,” addressed the possibility that a single collection of empirical facts might evidentially support multiple sciences equally well. This circumstance would negate the power of evidence to determine a definite theory and compromise the uniqueness of our mature sciences. Worse, since these facts also determine the applicable inductive logic, we would then have multiple logics applicable in the same domain. Inductive anarchy would prevail. In that earlier chapter, I argued that this possibility has not arisen in the case of mature sciences, which are well-supported by an extensive body of empirical evidence. There is, for example, only one periodic table of the elements and only one chemistry derived from it. Further I argued that the material theory of induction provides a mechanism that precludes the persistence of equal support for such multiple sciences. It is based on an instability in the competition among rival theories. Any gain by one of them enhances its inductive reach, while at the same time weakening that of the competitor. The enhanced theory is then better placed to achieve more successes at the expense of its rival. A continuation of the process leads to the evidential dominance of one theory. Where might we look to see this process acting within real sciences? The natural place is among the many fields of endeavor labeled as pseudosciences: astrology, parapsychology, telepathy, telekinesis, crystal healing, psychic surgery and much more.

Ley lines are properly defined as straight over-ground energy lines that echo the sinuous paths of larger underground rivers. They carry Yang Qi relative to the Yin Qi of underground water, and are associated with Heavenly consciousness and human spiritual ceremonial sites. These straight (at least over dozens of miles) spirit paths are found equally in China as elsewhere in the world, and frequently define the processional routes to major palaces, temples and cathedrals. Appropriate for sacred sites, these energy pathways are less comfortable for secular living, and houses built on them are generally a thoroughfare for all manner of spirits. They can be compared and contrasted with the more yin underground water lines as a yang energy matrix associated with a more heavenly consciousness, and are frequently worked by human ceremonial practice at sacred sites designed and constructed at key points in the landscape along these lines. Straight lines in the landscape can be divided into three types: The first are represented by lines of one or other of the global geomagnetic grids, and the ‘Second Schneider Grid’ is especially related to the paths of Roman roads in Europe. A second type of line is exemplified by the 41 lines radiating from the Sun Temple in the middle of Cuzco, central Peru, along which shrines, temples, graves, sacred hills, bridges and battlefields lie.
