  • The Relevance of the Franco-German Engine in the European Institutional Space Triangle
Master’s double degree program me in European studies Europa-Universität Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) / Institut d’Études Politiques de Strasbourg THE RELEVANCE OF THE FRANCO-GERMAN ENGINE IN THE EUROPEAN INSTITUTIONAL SPACE TRIANGLE “To what extent will France and Germany, despite their inner differences and while evolving in an unusual three-level institutional context, be able to express their role as engines for Europe in space? “ Charles GALLAND Under the supervision of Pr. Valérie LOZAC’H and Pr. Dr. Timm BEICHELT Summary The following thesis presents an analysis of the Franco-German relationship in European space policy (EUSP), a new field of European integration in the European Union in such that space has only become shared competence of the European Union with the Lisbon Treaty in 2007. The aim of this work is to verify if the common myth of the Franco-German’s leading role for the EU is relevant in a scientific domain that has constructed itself outside and in parallel of the Community institutions. First, a comparison of both France and Germany, will reveal that each country is guided by different historical, strategic and economic logics when dealing with space issues. Second, the thesis suggests that, despite these differences, a Franco-German consensus within the European space triangle will have the effect to reinforce Europe as a first-order space power. Foreword This thesis was produced under the supervision of Pr. Valérie LOZAC’H, of the Institut d’Études Politiques of Strasbourg, and Pr. Dr. Timm BEICHELT, of the Europa-Universität Viadrina of Frankfurt (Oder). I would like to thank them for their insightful comments and encouragement, but also for the hard questions which incented me to widen my research from various perspectives.

  • Airbus Presents Latest Innovations at the 2018 ILA Berlin Air Show
Airbus presents latest innovations at the 2018 ILA Berlin Air Show Toulouse, 20 April 2018 – Airbus will present its extensive product portfolio and a number of innovations at the 2018 ILA Berlin Air Show from 25 to 29 April, and will once again be the largest single exhibitor. This year’s ILA partner country is France. In the commercial aircraft segment, Airbus aircraft on display will be an Emirates Airline A380 and the A350-900 MSN 2. This A350 played a major role in the flight testing of the world’s most modern long-haul aircraft. More than 150 A350 XWBs are already in service around the world, including at Lufthansa, which has its home base for this aircraft type in Munich. Both the A380 and A350 XWB show the close cooperation between Germany and France within Airbus. The development, large-scale component manufacturing such as the fuselage, cockpit or vertical stabiliser, as well as final assembly and delivery activities for these aircraft are carried out at sites including Hamburg, Toulouse, Stade, Bremen, St. Nazaire and Nantes. A special attraction at Airbus this year will be the A340 BLADE (Breakthrough Laminar Aircraft Demonstrator in Europe). The wings of this test aircraft were modified to analyse new aerodynamic concepts for laminar flow as part of the European research project Clean Sky. In addition to the Eurofighter, Airbus Defence and Space will exhibit the C295 military transport aircraft and several Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) systems. • Optimism and a Record Investment Subsidy
Issue 7 | July 2010 Optimism and a record investment A380 order supports over 40,000 high-skill European and US jobs In the midst of continuing economic uncertainty in Europe - and a continuing pessimistic outlook from Europe’s legacy carriers - Emirates has announced one of the largest ever aviation fillips. The purchase announcement at the ILA Berlin Air Show of an additional 32 A380 aircraft at list prices is worth US$11.5 billion (AED42.2 billion). The order will benefit travellers, result in manufacturing jobs and is a boost to the economies of Dubai, Germany, France, the UK and US. Billions more will be spent on engines, spares, interiors, pilots, engineers and cabin crew for the new fleet. Emirates’ total orders for this aircraft type stands at 90, representing the largest ever order by value in European civil aviation history. The decision to purchase the additional aircraft is based on Emirates strategic plan for expansion in the coming decade; optimism based on over 20 years of continuous profit and a strong financial performance since the 2009 downturn. The A380 programme supports more than 40,000 high-skill jobs in Europe. This includes over 20,000 jobs in leading aerospace companies in Germany and France (such as EADS/Airbus, Weber, Goodrich, Thales, and Messier- Bugatti, Diehl, Recaro and MTU). Airbus estimates it will inject more than one billion Euros in total into the French and German economies in 2010 via supplier contracts on the A380 programme alone. In addition, all of Emirates existing and ordered A380s are powered by US The agreement was signed at the ILA Berlin Air Show by HH Sheikh Ahmed built Engine Alliance GP7200s.
