State Basketball Media Guide | 17 Colorado State University’s men’s basketball pro- gram has earned national acclaim since Dale Layer’s arrival as head coach for the types of student-athletes attracted to the program. Each of the past fi ve recruit- ing classes have been ranked among the top 40 nation- ally. Attracting student-athletes to Colorado State who can carry on the rich tradition of basketball excellence is just part of the overall success of the program. Once in Fort Collins, student-athletes have the op- portunity to learn from one of America’s top coaching staff s. In particular, members of Colorado State’s pro- gram gain knowledge and experience under the guid- ance of associate head coach Bill Peterson. Regarded as one of the most respected player devel- opment specialists in the nation, Peterson tailors indi- vidual and team workout sessions to provide the best possible learning and growth environments for every person in the program. Included in Peterson’s instruction are drills and tech- niques to assist each student-athlete develop their indi- vidual skills within the team framework which remains esssential to Colorado State’s success on the fl oor. His infl uence has been dramatic within the Rams’ program as witnessed by the consistent development of individuals from the time they arrive on campus un- til completing their playing eligibility. Peterson honed his developmental skills at both the collegiate and professional level. Before coming to Colorado State, he was an assistant coach who focused primarily on player development with the Dallas Mav- ericks of the NBA. Using the same skills, drills, and techniques cur- rently in use at Colorado State, Peterson tutored such NBA all-stars as Michael Finley, Steve Nash, and Dirk Nowitzki as a member of the Mavericks’ staff . He brought that same knowledge and expertise to Colorado State where his teaching has had a noticeable impact on the Rams’ program. Colorado State basketball’s strength and conditioning program helps the Rams become bigger, faster and stronger on the court
