Leadership articulates how God shows up in and through the congregation and its people STRENGTHEN THEIR b. The congregations has a clear understanding of God’s RELATIONSHIP larger mission, and members know their purpose in this WITH GOD time and place c. The congregation can articulate that purpose and create a plan for implementation Vital congregations do these three things: a. Relationships among leadership, pastor(s), and members create a loving community with good communication b. People work together respectfully through successes and NURTURE RELATIONSHIPS challenges c. There is a sense of ownership and belonging that drives the commitment and engagement in the mission of the church Vital congregations do these three things: a. The congregation opens its door to welcome the stranger A STRONG PRESENCE and goes beyond its doors to share the love of Jesus Christ IN THE COMMUNITY b. Creates and nurtures partnerships within the community to make a positive impact on the strength of the community Current Efforts in Congregational Vitality • CV Pilot Synod Project: – To learn from intentional, collaborative efforts with six synods to strengthen leadership development, faith formation, and community engagement • CV Pilot Synod Process: – To assess growth in vitality indicators (measured by survey tool) and apply learning to churchwide and synodical work to strengthen congregational vitality Current Efforts in Congregational Vitality, cont. • Renovated Grants Process – One system for all churchwide grants (uniform application and metrics) – Move from relating to 150 grantees to 9,300 congregations – Quarterly vs. Annual Grant Process (increased flexibility and responsiveness) – Grant Applications ask: • What are you testing? • How will you know if you get there? • Who are you partnering with? • What is the expected outcome? Current Efforts in Congregational Vitality, cont. • Encouraging “Holy Innovations” - Listening to God, one another and neighbor; trying something new as a result of that listening; then doing something different because of what we learned. – a shift from technical to adaptive change – steeped in spiritual practice – focuses on helping communities of Jesus join the movement of the Holy Spirit – Less about success/failure and more about learning • Directors for Evangelical Mission support congregational vitality in synods • Learn from each grant and assess whether changes are needed in model Congregational Vitality Survey – Church Council Members are invited to take the Congregational Vitality Survey based on your own congregational experience Church Council Discussions • What questions do you have about this initiative? • How do you envision your governance role as we move forward? • What expectations do you have of the churchwide organization related to this focus? EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH IN AMERICA BUDGET AND FINANCE COMMITTEE April 6, 2018 10 - Policy and Process for the Allocation of Where Needed Most Funds Page 1 of 2 The Campaign for the ELCA ‐ Where Needed Most Policy and Decision‐Making Process Church Council Action, November 2017: To request that the churchwide organization prepare a plan for the process by which “where needed most” dollars in Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA will be allocated and that the plan be reported to the Budget and Finance Committee at the April 2018 Church Council meeting for approval. The Campaign Where Needed Most ‐ Description of Use from Interpretation Materials: Undesignated gifts to the campaign are used to support campaign priorities where they are needed most. From sharing the gospel with others to supporting our church’s up‐and coming leaders, these gifts allow our church flexibility to respond in the time and place when it can make the biggest impact. Decision‐Making Committee: As needed, but at a minimum quarterly, the following ELCA churchwide staff will review proposals and make decisions about Campaign ‐ Where Needed Most allocations. ‐ ELCA Treasurer, Office of the Treasurer ‐ Director for Budget and Planning, Office of the Treasurer ‐ Executive Director, Mission Advancement ‐ Director of the Campaign for the ELCA, Mission Advancement ‐ Executive Director, Domestic Mission ‐ Executive Director, Global Mission ‐ Executive for Administration, Office of the Presiding Bishop Process for Submitting Proposals: Units with programmatic oversight of campaign priorities will submit proposals to the committee for review. Allocations will be approved based on the guidelines below. Policy for Allocation of Campaign Where Needed Most Funds: Campaign Where Needed Most funds will only be used to fund the established, approved priorities of the Campaign for the ELCA. Guidelines for Advancing or Approving funding from Campaign Where Needed Most Gifts: The following guidelines will be used by the committee to advance or allocated funds from gifts made to the Campaign Where Needed Most: 1 EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH IN AMERICA BUDGET AND FINANCE COMMITTEE April 6, 2018 10 - Policy and Process for the Allocation of Where Needed Most Funds Page 2 of 2 To provide seed money for campaign programs where an initial investment is required to launch the ministry. Funds advanced from Where Needed Most will be replenished as gifts are raised. Any unfunded balance at the end of the Campaign will be charged to the Campaign Where Needed Most Fund.

  • Julian, God, and the Art of Storytelling
    Godelinde Gertrude Perk Umeå Studies in Language and Literature 32 Department of Language Studies Umeå University, Sweden Celebrated for her compassionate theology and subtle, subversive imagery, Julian of Norwich (c. 1343 – c. 1416), the earliest known woman writer in the English language, is also an accomplished storyteller. This study explores and compares the narrative strategies found in her two accounts of her visionary experience, A Vision Showed to a Devout Woman and A Revelation of Love. Reading these two non-fiction texts as narratives, this analysis and the Art Julian, God, of Storytelling 2016 Umeå University, brings Julian’s stories into dialogue with the narratives of her own time, Middle English literary theory, modern narratology, and the texts’ attention to their own telling. This reveals that Revelation includes, expands and transforms the plot, point of view, and characterization of Vision, while Revelation simultaneously implo- des these narrative structures to hint at greater, divine structures. By creating a poetics of developing and enveloping in Revelation, Julian strategically depicts herself, God and the reader as charac- ters in each other’s narratives and as participating in each other’s storytelling: she authorizes her own story by making it God’s and the reader’s as well. As Robert Linthicum points out in his book Building a People of Power: Equipping Churches to Transform Their Communities , Jesus sought to initiate, in humanity, the reign or kingdom of God, God’s shalom ––God’s vision for human society. This kingdom of God is to be brought about by God’s people, seeking peacefully but shrewdly to re-form a society on the Jubilee principles of a reversal of fortune; where wealth is equitably distributed, poverty is eliminated, all politics are just, and all are reconciled to each other because all are reconciled with God (2 Cor. 5:19-20). As such, God’s people should personify and demonstrate by their lifestyle and behavior, their transfigured lives through their worship of and commitment to God. Our churches need to learn from Jesus, how he demonstrated the principles of the kingdom of God which he proclaimed and hence how tackled the power structures of his day that threatened the manifestation of that kingdom. When this is meaningfully and practically done by our congregations, then the proclamation of the gospel will find relevance in the lives of those outside of the church (and also for many within it).

Schweinsberg is a Southern Baptist Foreign missionary to Colombia. It was Dr. Maddry who had the inspired vision of establishing a chain of Baptist Missions in all the republics of South America. As Dr. Everett Gill, Jr. came into his ministry he fell under the spell and inspiration of this challenging vision, Today this dream has become tnore than a reality, for not only is South America encircled by: a chain of Baptist Missions but this circle has been linked up through Central America and Mexico to our work here in the United States. The greatest tribute that can be presented to the sacred memory of our beloved late secretary Dr. Everett Gill, Jr., is the record of advance in Latin America from the year 1941, when he was appointed by the Foreign Mission Board to his passing away on April 25, 1954. In 1941 Southern Baptists had 169 missionaries working in .Latin America-- today there are 385. In 1941, Southern Baptis ts had es tabliahed work in six nations in wia area--today thirteen nations are feeling the impact of our New Testament message. In 1941, z?.c~c werk 70,000 members in 600 Baptist churches--today there are 150,000 members in1,500 churches. Up until Baptists began work in Colombia in 1941 no new field had been, entered during a period of 23 years.
