Digital Remaking of San Baudelio de Berlanga Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation A6307 / Advanced Studio III HP Technology Studio Fall 2016 / Mondays and Tuesdays (alternate weeks) 26pm / 6 pts Prof. Adam Lowe and Prof. Carlos Bayod TA: Andrea Sforza Course overview This projectbased studio explores advanced applications of digital preservation technology through international realworld fieldwork. Drawing on previous knowledge of architectural structures systems and materials, students will employ cutting edge 3D scanning, photogrammetry and printing technologies to devise an experimental preservation treatment for a historic building. Students will carry out high resolution 3D and color recordings of the Hermitage of San Baudelio de Berlanga in Spain as well as a series of frescoes at the Met. We will then experiment with how to reassemble the pieces digitally, and envision ways in which the construction of a replica could reunite the scattered fragments in the building. Students will consider technology in a broader cultural, political and aesthetic context. They will inform their approaches with archival research, materials science research and other relevant research in order to address the range of issues opened up in the course. Thanks to the collaboration of the Factum Foundation and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, we will work with advanced technology to record the color and surface of a series of frescoes at the Cloisters (New York, September) and the Hermitage of San Baudelio (Spain, October). -

Based upon forensically accurate, high-resolution 3D scanning, photographic recording and new histori- cal research,the building and its dispersed mural paintings (removed in 1926) will be re-united in the form of a 1:1 physical recreation of the interior of the building. This replica will be fully visitable and will recreate an experience of the church in its original form. The exhibition will also explore new interpretations of the building and its enigmatic iconography, and new research about the sale of the paintings in America, including some now missing, and the restorations that have al- tered their appearance. Visitors in America (where most of the paintings reside) and Spain (where some of the paintings have been returned on loan and where the restored building still stands) will be able to experience the building for the first time in nearly a century as it was intended by the communities that built and decorated it. This exhibition aims to bring this under-valued master- piece to a contemporary public by contemporary means. -

Hayling Ward is qu te different w th a different community. It is part of South Oxhey and the proposal could result in Oxhey Hall being subsumed into the larger area. The two areas have very little in common and vastly different needs. Oxhey Hall has a community spirit that could easily be lost through this proposal. An Architectural Heritage with Strong Islamic Influence

Archit., Vol. 1, No. 4 (2017) 640–653 SOUTHERN PORTUGAL – AN ARCHITECTURAL HERitaGE WITH STRONG ISLAMIC INFLUENCE FERnando BRANCO CORREIA CIDEHUS – Universidade de Évora, Portugal. ABSTRACT The western part of al-Andalus was a peripheral zone of the Islamic World, far from the area of the Gua- dalquivir River and the Mediterranean coast. But in this western area there are important architectural elements from the Islamic era. In addition to the reuse of defensive and civilian structures from Roman times, there were military building programmes on the coastlines, from the 9th century onwards, with the arrival of Norse raiders. Moreover, some chronicles refer, for the 10th and 11th centuries, to the con- struction of ‘qasaba’(s) (military enclosures) in some cities and the total reconstruction of city walls. Recent archaeological activity has made evident traces of small palaces, houses and city walls but there is also an architectural heritage visible relative to other buildings – such as mosques and even small ‘ribat’(s) along the coastline. Some techniques, like that of ‘rammed earth’, are known to have been common in the Almohad period. In general terms, one can identify several remnants of buildings – religious, civil and military – with different construction techniques and traditions, not only the reuse of older constructions but also the erection of new buildings. On the other hand, it is possible to find parallels to these buildings in such varied areas as other parts of the ancient al-Andalus, North Africa, Syria and even Samarra (Iraq). This area of the Iberian Peninsula, described in chronicles as Gharb al-Andalus, is a hybrid region, where different traditions converged, taking advantage of the legacy of previous periods, mixing that legacy with contributions from North Africa, different areas of the Mediterranean and even the Middle East. -

It is unmistakable, commanding the eye for miles, sitting on the hill like a queen Fig. 1 Notre Dame-du-Chartres Cathedral , aerial view upon a throne. An elegant symphony of glass and stone, the cathedral bridges earth and sky, both literally and symbolically. A miracle of engineering, the cathedral is a testament to human creativity and divine majesty. One thousand miles to the south, the white streets of Cordoba twist and turn until, as if by accident, they stumble upon a magnificent sand colored building hidden behind a grove of trees. The mosque does not rise vertically but stretches horizontally, low to the ground, except for the tall minaret that casts its shadow over the courtyard. -

The Story of Ashridge House
Ashridge House The story of Ashridge goes back to the time when Edward I’s cousin, Edmund, acquired on his travels what he believed to be a portion of Christ’s blood. When Edmund succeeded to the title of Earl of Cornwall, he established a monastery at a spot high up in the Chilterns, some 600 ft above sea level and just two miles from Berkhamsted Castle which he had inherited and was his home. The monastery, founded in 1283, was called Ashridge College, and the Augustinian monks, known as Bonhommes, were committed to guard the precious portion of Christ’s blood and other sacred relics that were lodged there. With its royal connections, Ashridge soon became important, and. Edward I held a parliament there in 1291. While in mourning over the death of his wife Queen Eleanor, the king spent Christmas with the monks at Ashridge, ‘in the cold solitude of the Chiltern beechwoods’. In subsequent centuries Ashridge College continued to have royal patronage. The Black Prince, whose favourite home was Berkhamsted Castle, involved himself in the affairs of Ashridge College, and in his will left it his great bejewelled table to be used as an altar there. But in the years leading up to the Reformation, Ashridge College went into decline. Henry VIII was a friend of the Rector of the College, but it was only a few years after the king stayed there that he ordered the dissolution of all the monasteries. In 1539 Ashridge was closed, its treasures dispersed or destroyed, and the last monks left forever.
