WRPA engaged RESTORE (Rail Enhancements = Sustainable Transportation, Opportunity, Revitalization & Employment), a rail freight infrastructure research arm of the nonprofit educational organization All Aboard Ohio, to help it determine what might be the best way to build its rail development capacity. -
The Wabash—The Gould Downfall
THE WABASH—THE GOULD DOWNFALL THOMAS C. CAMPBELL, JR.1 Wabash- Pittsburgh Terminal Railway, known to THEmany people of Western Pennsylvania as the old Wabash Railroad, was constructed in the period from 1901 to 1904 by George Gould, the son of Jay Gould. This was not the first of the Gould railway ventures, nor the greatest finan- cially, but none of the others received more publicity. In1867, Jay Gould along with "Jim" Fisk and Daniel Drew decided to obtain control of the Erie Railroad through pur- chasing a majority of the outstanding stock. Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt of the New York Central was at that same time planning to control the Erie as it was one of the New York Central's greatest competitors. Gould, Fisk, and Drew were directors of the Erie, and the Commodore de- sired to relieve them of their duties after purchasing a ma- jority of the Erie stock. He ordered his brokers to: "Buy the Erie. Buy it at the lowest figure you can, but buy it." The brokers in carrying out the orders discovered that they had bought more Erie stock than was legally in existence. After carefully examining the newly purchased stock, some of it appeared to have been printed on new paper with the ink hardly dry. The three Erie directors had been printing illegal issues of stock to sell to the brokers. Fisk's response was : "Give us enough rag paper, and we'll hammer the ever- lasting tar out of the mariner from Staten Island." Drew, in speaking of the incident, said: "It was goodnight for the Commodore, because there is no limit to blank shares a print- ing press can turn out. -

INTRODUCTION This report presents the Federal Railroad Administration's findings in its investigation of 36 railroad employee fatalities suffered during 1985. Not included are the employee fatalities that occurred as a result of train derailments, collisions, or rail-highway crossing accidents; these are reported in the 1985 Summary of Accidents Investigated by the Federal Railroad Administration. The purpose of this report is to direct public attention to hazards that exist in the day-to-day operation of railroads, to guide the overall Federal program to promote the safety of railroad employees, and to supply rail management, rail labor, and all other interested parties with information and analysis for use in training and other action to prevent similar accidents. The Railroad evitalization and Regulatory Reform Act of 1976 required that each railroad designated by the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) as a class I railroad prepare and submit a full and coaplete analysis of its rail system to the secretary of Transportation. review was conducted of the Consolidated ail Corporaticai's (Conraills) procedures in gathering information for deteamining the classification and designation of rail lines, the circumstances surrounding the closing of Conrail's pivgyback terminal in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Conrail's plans for the rail line serving Scrantcn. Findings/conclusions: Conrail's estimated annual volume of about 4.5 nillion g s tons for the Scranton line was determined by train ovemeats during the week of December 12, 1976. Conrail's data accurately portrayed the then-current level of traffic, and the line was correctly designatei as a category A branchline. -

History of Linden Depot Genealogical Society of Montgomery County Crawfordsville Library – March 13, 2018 Introduction I realize that I probably do not appear to fit the profile of one who is interested in trains. However, I have always had a love of and a connection to trains. Before she got married, my Grandmother worked as a clerk for the “B&O Railroad” in Baltimore. Later, the train ran behind my Grandparents’ house; when I was a young child, I remember waving to the engineer as the train passed by and he would blow the whistle for me. My grandfather rode that train when he traveled from Baltimore to New York on business, and when I was visiting their house, he would sit on the side of the train where I could see him at the window and he would wave to me as he passed by. Page 1 of 50 I was raised in Ellicott City, Maryland, the site of the oldest surviving train station in the United States and one of the oldest in the world. The town of Ellicott City, which was originally known as Ellicott Mills, is 13 miles west of Baltimore. Ellicott City Station was originally built to serve the horse- drawn “railroad” cars that traveled to and from the Baltimore Harbor. The original wooden rails were eventually replaced with durable iron rails. The station still stands and is now a branch of the B&O Railroad Museum. January 8, 1950 Logansport Press Walks Into Path Of Train To End Life Jeffersonville, Ind., Jan. 7—An elderly Borden man walked onto the Monon railroad tracks at the Clark County town and faced a northbound passenger train as it bore down and carried him to his death. Coroner Edwin Coots returned a verdict of suicide in the death of Charles McKinley, 73, who lived alone in a small hut near the tracks. January 9, 1950 Vidette Messenger 16 Monon Freight Cars Derailed Crawfordsville, Ind., Jan. 9—Monon railroad crewman today repaired 400 feet of track torn up in the derailment of 16 Monon freight cars at Ladoga. There were no injuries. Trainmen said the accident yesterday apparently was caused by a broken wheel. A rail section was thrown through the roof of the Frank Nichols home but they were unhurt. Last May, 16 cars were derailed at the same spot. January 14, 1950 Kokomo Tribune Eight Hoosiers Killed In Auto Mishaps Friday (Excerpt) Marion County recorded its first traffic fatality of 1950 as Robert Wayne Bray, 23, Danville, was killed in a crossing accident. Bray‟s automobile was struck by a Monon railroad passenger train at the East 30th street crossing. He is survived by the widow, his mother and two brothers. January 26, 1950 Kokomo Tribune Killed By Train Bedford, Ind., Jan. 26—William Beavers, 86 (or 56), of Mitchell, died in a hospital here last night an hour and a half after he was struck by a Monon railroad passenger train as he walked along a track in Mitchell. -

Mr. Frederick was a life-long employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad. According to an article in the collection featuring Frederick, he was a Pennsylvania Railroad engineer and began working on the railroad about 1942. The article also stated that he was an avid model railroader. Frederick photographed trains and also purchased photographs from others. He acquired many images of Pennsylvania Railroad property; which at the time was the largest (by traffic and revenue) railroad in the U.S.A. The Polk City Directories list him as an engineer for the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1964 and 1965. These same directories also list him as residing at the same address on the southeast side of Metropolitan Indianapolis in 1997.
