Revised malaria risk map for South Africa Final technical draft September 2018 (subject to approval by Director General: National Department of Health). South Africa’s malaria risk profile has changed since the last edition of the map was released in 2013. The draft revised map is made available here (Figure below), as the local malaria season (September – May) has started. Please note that this draft map is awaiting final approval, and is subject to amendment. Major changes to the malaria risk areas, based on recent malaria transmission data from various sources, are as follows: The moderate risk areas (pink colour) in Vhembe and Mopani districts, Limpopo Prov-ince, have extended westwards, towards Tzaneen, and now include Musina, Thohoyandou and surrounds. The low risk areas (yellow colour) have like-wise extended westwards to include the rest of Vhembe District, and the northern parts of Capricorn and Waterberg districts, including Makhado, Alldays, Swartwater and Lephalale. The malaria situation in the Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, and neighbouring countries, remains largely unchanged. The borders of risk areas should be regarded as approximate, and map users should understand that sporadic transmission may occur outside desig- nated areas. Infected malaria mosquitoes are sometimes transported outside usual risk areas, and may transmit the infection (so-called ‘taxi malaria’). Visitors and residents should be aware of the ‘flu- like’ common symptoms of early malaria, and promptly seek healthcare advice if they think they may have malaria. Retrospective observations of the processes of recordings the nurses performed on the RtHC (ṉ=36) were carried out to collect data. A checklist was used to aid the observations. Furthermore, face-to-face interviews were administered on participant nurses in collaboration with document review. The results of this paper revealed considerable omissions on the administration and management of the RtHC instrument. Crucial information was also incorrectly recorded while some was never recorded at all. Clinic managers should continuously monitor the nurses on the administration and management of the RtHC to ensure quality. Key words:

2.3.1 South Africa Land Border Crossing of Beitbridge (Zimbabwe) Overview South African border post complex Zimbabwean border post complex Daily Capacity Customs Clearance Other Relevant Information Overview Beitbridge border post (north beyond the town of Musina) in Limpopo province on the South African side is a high priority border post and the main gateway on the north-south trade corridor within the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The actual international border crossing is via the Beitbridge structure over the Limpopo river. On the South African side the main route is via the N1 roadway, at the border post facility routes dovetails for processing by authorities to accommodate cars, buses, pedestrians and trucks. Once through the processing at the border post, routes bottle neck to cross the bridge structure and again dovetails at the Zimbabwean side for processing by authorities similar to the aforementioned transport modalities. Finally to bottleneck again onto the A6 (later splitting to A6 and A4) roadway through the town of Beitbridge on the Zimbabwean side for further transit. The rail line runs parallel but separate to the motor vehicle crossing infrastructure. Various agencies conduct operations at the border post, mainly Department of Home Affair (immigration), South African Police Services (border police), Department of Health (port health), South African Revenue Services (customs and excise), Department of Agriculture. DISCUSSION PAPER | NOVEMBER 2018 BORDER ECONOMIES LINKAGES TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRADE CORRIDORS AND REGIONAL VALUE CHAINS IN SADC Anna Ngarachu, Christopher Wood, Heinrich Krogman, Elisha Tshuma, Dale Mudenda & Catherine Grant Makokera ABOUT GEGAFRICA The Global Economic Governance (GEG) Africa programme is a policy research and stakeholder engagement programme aimed at strengthening the influence of African coalitions at global economic governance forums such as the G20, BRICS, World Trade Organization and World Bank, among others, in order to bring about pro-poor policy outcomes. The second phase of the programme started in March 2016 and will be implemented over a period of three years until March 2019. The programme is expected to help create an international system of global economic governance that works better for the poor in Africa through: • undertaking substantial research into critical policy areas and helping South African policymakers to prepare policy papers for the South African government to present at global economic governance platforms; • ensuring that African views are considered, knowledge is shared and a shared perspective is developed through systematic engage- ment with African governments, regional organisations, think tanks, academic institutions, business organisations and civil society forums; and • disseminating and communicating research and policy briefs to a wider audience via mass media and digital channels in order to create an informed and active policy community on the continent. The programme will be focused on three thematic areas: development finance for infrastructure; trade and regional integration; and tax and transparency. GEGAFRICA is funded by the UK Department for International Development and managed by a consortium consisting of DNA Economics, the South African Institute of International Affairs and Tutwa Consulting.

Xenophobia Outsider Exclusion Addressing Frail Social Cohesion in South Africa's Diverse Communies Musina Case Study October 2017 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Overview This case study presents findings of a research conducted by the African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS) in Musina, Limpopo during April 2016 and March 2017. This initiative was undertaken as part of research conducted in parallel across 15 South African communities documenting and explaining the status of social cohesion across the country. More specifically, it endeavours to identify the causes of group-based conflicts, communal violence, and patterns of violent exclusion. Through these efforts, the research can contribute to developing more effective intervention programmes by external stakeholders working with community members to promote social cohesion and peaceful cohabitation. The findings presented here are informed by qualitative individual interviews and focus group discussions with residents and relevant key informants conducted between 18 and 24 April 2016, as well as between 20 and 25 March 2017. A team of three ACMS researchers spent ten days in the area conducting a total of 31 individual interviews and four focus groups discussions with relevant stakeholders. Participants included South African and foreign residents as well as key informants including representatives of the local authority, community leaders, faith-based, and community-based organisations. Secondary literature provided additional background and insight. Recognising that perceptions drive social interactions and mobilization as much as facts,1 our approach documents and where possible distinguishes between the two. 1.2 Primary Findings and Conclusions Musina is melting pot of different races, ethnic groups, nationalities, languages, cultures, and religious practices.

As Mayor of Musina Local Municipality, I am aware of the numerous responsibilities bestowed on the Council to bring about fundamental changes to our municipality that will have a positive effect on the livelihoods of all our people. Local Government is both the most intimate sphere of government and the one that impacts most on the everyday lives of citizens. In his State of the Nation Address on 10 February 2017, President Jacob Zuma said government has made progress on key areas packaged in the Nine Point Plan to reignite growth so that the economy can create much-needed jobs. He said the focus areas include industrialization, mining and beneficiation, Agriculture and agro Processing, energy, SMMEs, managing work place conflict, attracting investments, growing the oceans economy and tourism. He said other areas added include cross-cutting areas such as science and technology; Water and sanitation Infrastructure; Transport Infrastructure; and Broadband Rollout. Musina Municipality is also moving towards the same direction to assist government to achieve the set goals. We are striving towards a more integrated planning approach whereby we seamlessly integrate our IDP, budget and performance management system with one another while simultaneously aligning our planning to National and Provincial plans and frameworks, specifically the National Development Plan 2030.

The townships of Musina and Musina-Nancefield comprises 11 000 ha in extent and is situated in the Vhembe district of the Limpopo province and within the magisterial district of Musina. The municipality is situated approximately 15 km to the south of the Limpopo River, which forms the international boundary with Zimbabwe. The international border post is Beit Bridge.

Design/methodology/approach – Data got compiled by interviews and questionnaires in addition to focus group discussions and physical observation. Findings – The study revealed many challenges associated with tourism undertakings around the Big Tree Nature Reserve and its nearby tourism entities. The benefits of tourism were not efficiently tapped into by the local communities within and around the study area. The factors contributing to the poor state of tourism running got delineated by the findings of the study. Hence, there was a potential obligation for a turnaround effective tourism strategy to improve tourism enterprises to benefits local communities within the area. Originality/value – Musina Municipality is one of the remote regions in the North of Limpopo Province, in South Africa. It also has impoverished rural communities akin to many rural areas within the continent. Despite the mentioned, it considerably covers a mostly tourism-orientated area within the Vhembe District.
