Living in Nepal reminds me of the summer holidays I used to spend at the countryside, in Northern France. As a child, I spent a lot of time at my grandparents’ and the living conditions and warmth of the people there were like the ones I’ve met in Kathmandu. When I really think about it, I can see that Nepali and French ways of Yet, what is very surprising here is the cosmopolitan nature of the city itself; and the diversity life aren’t so different. The Ongoing Mystery of Shakti Yogmaya 1 2 3 2 November, Yala Maya Kendra As Barbara Nimri Aziz, the speaker for the day and the pioneer in studying the life of Kulung-born leader known as Shakti Yogmaya commenced the lecture, the listeners were all ears. She began with the mysterious death of Yogmaya and around 67 of her followers, which was able to ignite a sense of curiosity in everyone in the hall. It was later followed by some interesting details of Aziz’s research and what she had discovered. The events she recorded called for a special sensibility to poetry, to the potential and capacity of rural women, and to the role of religious experience in political leadership. A few of Yogmaya’s poems were also recited during the lecture. Aziz shared her interesting encounters with Parijat and recollected, “She called Yogmaya her ancestor—one of the greatest poets in Nepal.” More research, from both foreigners and Nepalis, is being carried out on the recorded events of Yogmaya’s life 4 5 in an effort to dig out more information from all aspects. The lecture was followed by an interactive discussion session which saw many queries from the audience to which Aziz gave satisfying responses. 1. Barbara Nimri Aziz 2. Matrika Timalsina 3. The Digital Tribe 2 November, Siddhartha Art Gallery The students from the Center for Art and Design at the Kathmandu University and Danish -Bulgarian artist Duo miniartist Sofia Burchardi and Plamen Bontchev collaborated to organize a group exhibition titled ‘The Digital Tribe: Understanding Who We are in the Age of Hyper Connectivity’. The exhibit that was held at the 2 3 Siddhartha Art Gallery had four installation art pieces reflecting the theme of how the internet and digital world is influencing our lives. The installation titled ‘Sata sat cart’ is the visualization of how our daily life is like the internet, where ideas and talks are exchanged. ‘All that you can’t eat’ is a beautiful display of a well set dining table laden with the best of crockery and cutlery but filled with the alphabet keys of the keyboard as a metaphor to distinguish the virtual and the reality. ‘Verses’ is another arrangement of a traditional stone carver’s studio where inputs from various parties lead to the completion of a whole, just like the internet. ‘Augmented Deities’ by Burchardi and Bontchev is a lenticular photograph of eight different individuals merged, which can be seen at different angles, reflecting on the concept of identity when in contact with another person on the internet. The exhibition raises various questions in the minds of the spectators of understanding our own identity in the age of hyper connectivity. The participating students are Saran Tandukar, Roshan Sakha, Pramesh Sherchan, Bhawana Ghimire, Karma Gurung, Suresh Maharjan, Shiva Prasad Upadhayaya, Rabindra Shrestha, Rabin Maharjan, Shreejana Shakya, and Nhooja Tuladhar. 1.
