The chance of being born with neurofibromatosis (NF), an aggressive condition that causes tumours to form on the brain, spinal cord and nerves, is around one in 3000, odds that unfortunately, local Jasmine Le Tisser has dealt with her entire life. At the age of just 20, Jasmine has recently undergone her third brain surgery, but is now turning the table on NF by advocating with the Childrenʼs Tumour Foundation to push for fundraising via the NF Hero Challenge to hopefully one day find a cure. 280820 06

Jasmine Le Tisser shares her neurofibromatosis journey ahead of the NF Hero challenge

ASHLYNE MCINNES Local Jasmine Le Tisser is encouraging people to get on board with the NF Hero Challenge next month to raise money and awareness for neurofibromatosis (NF), a genetic condition which has led her to have three major brain surgeries in the past five years. NF causes tumours to form on the nerves anywhere in the body, including the brain and spine and it is JASMINE’S progressive, unpredictable and there is currently no cure. Jasmine was first physically impacted by NF at the age of 12, experiencing persistent headaches and an MRI then revealed the true extent of her condition. Not yet a teenager, Jasmine, from that MRI, learnt that she had scoliosis, two small tumours in her lumbar spine and an optic pathway glioma in the middle of her optic nerves that required immediate chemotherapy. For one year, Jasmine received twelve rounds of chemotherapy. JOURNEY Continued on Page 4

RILEY UPTON While closed to the public due to coronavirus restrictions, the Central Goldfields Art Gallery has launched two new virtual exhibitions showcasing local artists. Opening last Saturday, the two exhibitions are titled Jeff Makin: Australia Felix and Tiffany Titshall: Out of the Fire and comprise of works by Chewton artist Jeff Makin and local artist Tiffany Titshall, who is based in Majorca. While in Portugal in 2018, Ms Titshall was caught in catastrophic bushfires around the town of Pedrogao Grande, north of Lisbon, which killed 69 people. Working with charcoal, Ms Titshall’s works recount her experiences in Portugal and the passing of her mother shortly after she returned home. “The bushfire coverage would be very relatable for a lot of people, it was a blue gum plantation that burnt and it was just as powerful and deadly as the fires we have here,” she said. “In this particular exhibition all of my works relate to overseas experiences but my work, whether it be interior or exterior, is psychological and emotional. “Sometimes I might be using an image of something from overseas but there’s a whole other meaning to it, like what’s going on in my life or grief after my mother passed OFFICIAL MEDICAL ADVICE away.” An artist since the early 1990s and having exhibited locally in the past, Ms Titshall said she creates art with charcoal because of its simplicity. “I love the simplicity of charcoal and that you can get so much out of it,” she said. Don’t risk it. “You don’t have to buy a lot of complicated materials to do it and it relates to the burnt landscape which I’m conveying.” The prints that comprise Mr Makin’s exhibition are part of the gallery’s permanent Always follow collection and centre around Major Mitchell’s description of the country south of the Murray River as the lucky country. Included in the exhibition is also a painting of Timor’s Grand Duke Mine, which Mr Makin took interest in during a visit to the area last the health advice. year and is displayed to the public for the first time as part of this exhibition. Central Goldfields Art Gallery curator Helen Kaptein said despite being closed to the public, the gallery is committed to showcasing high- quality work with these two exhibitions being no exception. “We do aim for a real diversity of mediums, styles and artists and as part of that overall program, we have a commitment to showing really high-quality work,” she said. “We’ve worked closely with the Midlands Historical Society in presenting Jeff Makin’s painting of the Grand Duke Mine in Timor which is a fantastic reference to our local history and something I expect a lot of people will find interesting. “Tiffany Titshall’s work is multilayered and it does speak about loss but at the same time there is a beauty to this work and I feel it can It’s up to all of us to keep each other safe. really speak to audiences wherever they may be.” You must continue to practise good hygiene, Ms Kaptein said gallery staff will be using social media and other digital platforms to physical distancing, and if you’re even slightly unwell, engage the community with the exhibitions. “We have hung the artworks in the gallery get tested and stay at home. Yes; Mum, Nan, Great Grand Mother and sister, your 90th Birthday is on Monday 31st August. From all of your family we wish you a wonderful Birthday, with a very special birthday greeting from Ivan and Yvonne McNeill. Rhonda, born in Swan Hill to Alice and Ivan McNeill. Spoilt rotten as an only sister to Alan and Ivan. You grew up in a railway house that is diagonally across from the Morton Fig Tree in Swan Hill. Learning to swim in the Murray River and quite often with your brothers or cousins. Caught pinching watermelons from your neighbour. You dragged the first available returned soldier “Bill” to a marriage service and after a couple of years moved to Moe, onto a mixed Dairy and Piggery farm, now at the bottom of the Blue Rock dam. Not far from Walhalla where your father was born and Alice and Ivan McNeill grandparents James and Maggie lived. You and Bill started a collection of five children while in Moe,

tewart On the guise of improving your sex life you moved to Craigie to Bill and Rhonda S add another two kids to your collection before investing in an electronic birth control device called a “TV”. This device worked (thank goodness) as the rabbit plague was being decimated in feeding your hungry clan. A very well-known local, Mr “Bull” Anderson, was happy to give you your driving licence as he thought it would be better to have a licence as you had been driving for some time. Your love of dancing was restarted and you happily attended 60-40, New-Vogue, line dancing and boot scooting. In your own way you have watched and enjoyed your family growing and expanding along life's journeys, keeping a diary of all birthdays and additions to your growing clan. Your life’s experiences have included riding on steam trains, Rhonda McNeill flying in D24 planes in the 40’s, boat cruises, round the world Myrtle, Alice and holiday, drinking beer in the Vatican, growing up surrounded George Brace by family and friends. Your pleasures may seem small but sometimes they are the hardest to achieve. Beautiful things such as a baby, flowers, a letter from family can meet these goals, most importantly ice-cream. A couple more things for you to try and learn to play are the piano A young Rhonda McNeill and bagpipes. Everyone would enjoy those activities in Havilah. Changes you have witnessed are; women’s rights, jet planes, space travel, man on the noon, medical advances, the atomic bomb, TV's, microwaves, washing machines, electric iron, the demise of the exchange girl putting you through on the phone, PC's, owning a car, and supermarkets. Your family wish you a wonderful day. Don’t drink too much beer The McNeill family but eat all the Ice-cream available. We hope you have fun identifying some of your family photo history. To all the staff in Havilah, it will be difficult to keep her away from the alcohol supply and that’s OK just this once. You all do a wonderful job and Rhonda’s family greatly appreciate your care and attention for her. Alice McNeill and cousins

“Think about who you love, then think about them in ICU.”

For Sarah, who’s been battling coronavirus for nearly 8 weeks, being separated from her two little boys, has been heartwrenching. On top of coronavirus attacking every one of her body systems, intense pain and acute breathing difficulty, she still has no idea when she will be well enough to see her boys. If you have symptoms - please get tested. Payments of $450 are available to help you stay home and wait for your test result.
