Parrish WHEREAS The City of Mississauga operates on the Treaty and Traditional Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and Anishinaabe peoples, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Huron-Wendat First Nation. We recognize that these peoples, and their ancestors live and lived on these lands since time immemorial on these lands called Turtle Island. The City of Mississauga is home to many First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples; and WHEREAS the residents of the Town, now City, of Mississauga chose for their name an anishinaabemowim name which speaks to the shared settler and Indigenous history within these lands; and WHEREAS the City of Mississauga has committed to a path towards Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and has responded to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action; and WHEREAS the City of Mississauga is committed to speaking truths about our history to further our collective understanding of the past to help create a better future; and WHEREAS the terrible uncovering of over one thousand unmarked and forgotten children burials at residential schools which have been reported over the past month is a truth about Canada’s past; and WHEREAS because of these truths the government of Canada has declared this year’s Canada Day should be a time of reflection and focus on reconciliation; and WHEREAS Gimaa Stacey LaForme of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation has called for this to be a time for supporting each other and contemplating the legacy and future of Canada; and THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Mississauga will mark Canada Day virtually this year in a manner that provides an opportunity for reflection on our shared history and commitment to a better future: • Singing of National Anthem • Greetings and Opening Remarks, Mayor Bonnie Crombie • Comments from Mayor of Kariya, Japan Takeshi Inagaki • Comments from Gimaa Stacey LaForme • Oath of Reaffirmation performed by Members of Council • Closing Remarks, Mayor Bonnie Crombie • Lighting the Clock Tower orange to remember those lives lost and changed forever as a result of residential schools 3 Page 1 of 2 • Changing the digital signage at the Square to “As we mark Canada Day, the City of Mississauga stands in solidarity with Indigenous communities across Canada.” AND FURTHER to mark this Canada Day: That the Council of the City of Mississauga call upon the Government of Canada to terminate its appeal of the 2019 Human Rights Tribunal Ruling, ordering Ottawa to pay compensation to First Nations Children and their families, separated in a chronically underfunded child welfare system that sees Indigenous children making up more than half the children in foster care even though they comprise only 7% of all the children under the age of 15 in Canada. Resolution 219-2021 Whereas the Federal government has passed a motion to adopt 988, a National three-digit suicide and crisis hotline; and Whereas the motion calls for the federal government to consolidate all existing suicide crisis numbers into one three-digit hotline; and Whereas the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has increased the demand for suicide prevention services by 200%; and Whereas existing suicide prevention hotlines require the user to remember a 10-digit number and go through directories or be placed on hold; and Whereas in 2022 the United States will have in place a national 988 crisis hotline; and Whereas the Municipality of Hastings Highlands recognized that it is a significant and important initiative to ensure critical barriers are removed to those in a crisis and seeking help; Now Therefore Be It Resolved as follows: 1. That the Municipality of Hastings Highlands endorses this 988 crisis line initiative. 2. That a letter demonstrating Hastings Highland's support be sent to Daryl Kramp MPP, Derek Sloan MP, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Federal Minister of Health, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications (CRTC) and all municipalities in Ontario.

Premier watch Premier Doug Ford was in Mississauga Friday to re-announce funding for community policing. ​ ​ Specifically, the Peel Regional Police is getting $20.5 million from the Community Safety and Policing grant program, a $195-million envelope the PCs announced in mid-December. In Peel, some of the cash will go towards more neighbourhood watch services, police town halls and “cultural community outreach.” "My message to the criminals that are watching us now: we are coming for you, we are going to find you and we are going to lock you up for a long time,” Ford said at the news conference, which featured a well-armed police backdrop. ​ ​ Solicitor General Sylvia Jones, Attorney General Doug Downey, local PC MPPs and ex-PC ​ ​ ​ ​ leader-turned-mayor-of-Brampton Patrick Brown were also in tow. ​ ​ Brown and Ford had their first official sit-down since Ford took office at the Peel police station ​ ​ where the announcement took place.     Joint statement calling for sanctioning of Chinese and Hong Kong officials and protection for Hong Kongers at risk of political persecution We, the undersigned, call upon the Government of Canada to take action in light of the mass arrests and assault on civil rights following the unilateral imposition of the new National Security Law in Hong Kong. Many in Hong Kong fear they will face the same fate as the student protestors in Tiananmen Square, defenders’ lawyers, and millions of interned Uyghurs, Tibetans, and faith groups whose rights of free expression and worship are denied. We urge the Government of Canada to offer a “Safe Harbour Program” with an expedited process to grant protection and permanent residency status to Hong Kongers at risk of political persecution under the National Security Law, including international students and expatriate workers who have been involved in protest actions in Canada. Furthermore, Canada must invoke the Sergei Magnitsky Law to sanction Chinese and Hong Kong officials who instituted the National Security Law, as well as other acts violating human rights; and to ban them and their immediate family members from Canada and freeze their Canadian assets. Canada needs to work closely with international allies with shared values to institute a strong policy toward China. It is time for Canada to take meaningful action to show leadership on the world stage.
