The Making of the Fathers of Astronomy Exhibit Opinion The Making of the Fathers of Astronomy Exhibit Opinion Christopher M. Graney Otter Creek–South Harrison Observatory Jefferson Community & Technical College, USA E-mail: [email protected] Summary Key Words The International Year of Astronomy 2009 stretched a few days into 2010 IYA2009 here in Louisville, Kentucky — the Fathers of Astronomy exhibit at the Frazier Exhibitions International History Museum did not close until 3 January 2010. Fathers of History of Astronomy Astronomy, which was open for five months, told the story of Galileo through authentic original editions of three books — the 1493 Nuremberg Chronicle, Nicolas Copernicus’s 1543 On the Revolutions of Heavenly Spheres, and Galileo Galilei’s 1632 Dialogue Concerning the two Chief World Systems. The success of “Fathers” resulted from three very different partners coming together and combining resources to produce a history-themed IYA2009 programme of the highest quality at minimal cost. Lessons learned from the exhibit may be of value to people interested in communicating astronomy to the public. Size of Collection: 4 cubic feet Locator Number: Mss./A/B937d Bullitt Family Papers-Oxmoor Collection, additional papers. 1920-1978 Biographical Note William Marshall Bullitt was the son of Thomas and Annie Logan Bullitt. He too was a successful lawyer. In 1912 President Taft appointed Bullitt Solicitor General of the United States. He held the position for less than a year, as Taft was not re-elected. In 1914 he made a run for one of Kentucky’s senate seat but lost. That ended Bullitt’s political career. Bullitt turned his attention to his law career and made his law firm one of the most successful and largest firms in the state. In 1918 he accepted a position with the Red Cross as deputy commissioner and traveled through Europe immediately after the war. Bullitt became an influential figure in Louisville. He sat on many bank, insurance, and company boards. He was also a member of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Nora Iasigi Bullitt was the daughter of Oscar and Amy Iasigi and was born in Massachusetts in 1881. Current models of Supreme Court decision-making place a high or exclusive reliance on ideology as the indicator of how the justices vote. However, research has also shown that the Office of the Solicitor General, the chief attorneys on behalf of the United States government, is significantly more successful before the Court than the average attorney. This success may require modification of the current understanding of the decision-making of the Supreme Court to include an element of influence outside the justices’ ideological preferences. Previous research has focused on the success of the Office of the Solicitor General without delving into whether that success was a result of case selection by the Office of the Solicitor General, congruence of ideologies between the Office of the Solicitor General and the members of the Supreme Court, or some influence by the Office of the Solicitor General. This dissertation explores whether the Office of the Solicitor General’s success is the result of influence on the justices by controlling for the justices’ ideologies and the other potential influences on the justices’ decisions such as public opinion, Congress, state governments, petitioner bias, and the experience of the attorneys for the period of 1953-1999.
