Day one is a ridge walk along the AT and Neighbor Mountain, with some views to the west, followed by a steep descent to Jeremy’s Run, where we’ll camp in a sheltered spot near the stream. We will hike along both sides of the river, first on the west side of Gunpowder Rd. to River Valley Ranch. After lunch we will go into a cave on the north side, flashlight recommended (biggest cave in Baltimore County – pictures on Google Earth) and go to the Betty’s Run waterfall. Then we will hike another loop on the east side of Gunpowder Rd. to Hemlock Gorge, an unusual river gorge that makes you feel like you are in New England. Steep climb up the White Oak Canyon trail; and steep climb to the top of Hawksbill Summit. We will return on the Big Meadows Horse Trail and then descend steeply on the Cedar Run Trail. We will follow the Buck Ridge Trail gradually climbing 650 feet to the top of Buck Ridge in four miles. The remaining two miles is downwardly undulating resulting in a net descent of 200 feet to the Kings Gap Mansion. Lunch will be eaten on the mansion’s stone patio with a nice scenic view.
