Parey* Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri – 185234, Jammu and Kashmir, India; [email protected] Abstract Himalayas represents one of the unique ecosystems in terms of species diversity and species richness. While studying taxa of butterflies in Jammu and Rajouri districts located in Western Himalaya, fourteen species (Abisara bifasciata Moore, Pareronia hippia Fabricius, Elymnias hypermnestra Linnaeus, Acraea terpsicore Linnaeus, Charaxes solon Fabricius, Symphaedra nais Forster, Neptis jumbah Moore, Moduza procris Cramer, Athyma cama Moore, Tajuria jehana Moore, Arhopala amantes Hewitson, Jamides celeno Cramer, Everes lacturnus Godart and Udaspes folus Cramer) are recorded for the first time from the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Investigations for butterflies were carried by following visual encounter method between 2014 and 2019 in morning hours from 7 am to 11 am throughout breeding seasons in Jammu and Rajouri districts. This communication deals with peculiar taxonomical identity, common name, global distribution, IUCN status and photographs of newly recorded butterflies. Important sightings include Blue Gem Poritia Methods erycinoides elsiei, Square-band Brownie Miletis nymphys porus, Plain Plushblue Flos apidanus ahamus, Blue Royal Ancema carmentalis, Study area Elwes Silverline Spindasis elwesi, Artipe skinneri, etc. The Panbari Reserve Forest (26036’N & 93030’E) is protected under the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) Keywords: Butterfly diversity, Kaziranga, Lycaenidae, northeastern India, Panbari Reserve. as its fourth addition (Images 1a,b & 2). The average elevation of the forest is around 90m. The altitude however ranges from 70–300 m. The reserve is very close to National Highway 37 (NH37) on the Guwahati- The Lycaenidae (Blues) butterfly diversity in low Jorhat route. The reserve falls between Golaghat and elevation forests of Panbari Reserve, Kaziranga - West Karb Anglong (KA) districts of Assam. To the north of Karbi Hills, upper Assam is reported in this paper. Karbi the reserve lies Dollamora proposed reserve in Karbi Hills constitue a chain of hill ranges lying in middle Assam Anglong District and on the southern boundary is a in the southern bank of the river Brahmaputra. -

Introduction Long term studies of Vietnamese Rhopalocera suggest that by using a taxonomic composition analysis of the modern fauna, with ecological and biogeographical characteristics and comparative data with butterfly faunas of adjacent regions, it is possible to offer a plausible account of the history and derivation of the Vietnamese fauna. In former works on the butterfly fauna of Vietnam and of the Oriental tropics generally, we completed the first steps in understanding possible derivation mechanisms for the group. In particular, all Vietnamese butterfly species have been classified according to their global geographical ranges (Holloway, 1973; 1974; Spitzer et al., 1993; Monastyrskii, 2006; 2007), from the most restricted to the most widespread (Methods). A similar approach for notodontid moths in Thailand has been adopted by Schintlmeister & Pinratana (2007). Moreover, depending on the representation of various species distribution range categories, a scheme of biogeographical zonation has been suggested (Monastyrskii, 2006; 2007). In continuing studies on the specificity and derivation of the modern Vietnam butterfly fauna, aspects of species range configuration and other parameters of butterfly distribu‐ tions are considered in the current work. For example, it is possible to assign genera to groups according to both their overall range and variation of their species-richness across that range (Holloway, 1969, 1974) or according to representation of particular species range types within the genera (Holloway, 1998). -

Collection of insects belonging to different order and family was made by using variety of collection equipments and methods due to the diversity in their habitate. Study was carried out at selected habitats from August 2020- January 2021. A total of 51 insect species belonging to 8 different orders and 34 different families were recorded in the study area. Among these, 23 species were identified from natural ecosystem (12 families), 17 from semi-natural ecosystem (12 families) and 11 from Man-made ecosystem (11 families). During the present investigation high species composition was recorded in natural ecosystem followed by semi-natural ecosystem whereas the minimum species composition was noticed in Man-made ecosystem. The study conclude that the natural ecosystem support the existence of rich insect species might be due to favourable environmental and habitat conditions. Therefore, the continuous monitoring and conservation of natural ecosystems is highly essential for the sustenance of rich flora and fauna. -

We surveyed Lepidoptera found on 11 species of Inga (Fabaceae:Mimosoideae) co-existing on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, to evaluate factors influencing diet choice. Of the 47 species of caterpillars (747 individuals) recorded, each fed on a distinct set of Inga.In the field, 96% of the individuals were found on young leaves. Growth rates of caterpillars that were fed leaves in the laboratory were 60% higher on young leaves compared to mature leaves. When caterpillars were fed leaves of nonhost Inga, they grew more slowly. These data provide support for a link between preference and performance. However, among hosts on which larvae normally occurred, faster growth rates were not associated with greater host electivity (the proportion of larvae found on each host species in the field, corrected for host abundance). Growth rates on normal hosts were positively correlated with leaf expansion rates of the host, and fast expansion was associated with leaves with higher nutritional content. Detailed studies on a gelechiid leaf roller, the species with the largest diet breadth, allowed us to assess the importance of factors other than growth that could influence diet electivity. This species showed a 1.7-fold difference in growth rate among Inga hosts and faster growth on species with fast-expanding leaves. -

Diversity of butterfly communities of a tropical rain forest of Bu Gia Map National Park in South Vietnam was studied in four different habitat types (the natural forest, the disturbed forest, the bamboo forest, and the stream sides in the forest) in December 2008 and April 2009. A total of 112 species with 1703 individuals of Papilionoidae (except Lycaenidae) were recorded. The proportion of rare species tends to decrease from the natural forest to the stream sides, while the proportion of common species tends to increase from the natural forest to the stream sides. The stream sides have the greatest individual number, while the disturbed forest contains the greatest species number. The bamboo forest has the least species and individual numbers. -

NEW OR LITTLE KNOWN BUTTERFLIES FROM CHINA (II) OKANOMasao The present paper deals with five Chinese species belonging to the families Hespe;iidae, ’Riodinidae and Nymphalidae. Among ’them one specie.s and two subspecies are described as new to science and one subspecies is newly.added to the fauna of China. Whereas in India, this genus is represented by only one species Z. flegyas which is also its type species. The male and female genitalia of this type species are studied for the first time and accordingly the generic diagnosis has been updated by incorporating these characters. Besides some variations in wing maculation and venation have also been recorded in this species. Keywords: Lycaenidae, Riodinidae, Zemeros, Male genitalia and Female genitalia.
