TOTUS TUUS 2016 Diocese of Amarillo Summer Catechetical Youth Program July 17th -22nd Incoming Grades 1-6 Monday – Friday 9:00 am – 3:00 pm ( Need to bring a bagged lunch daily, snacks will be provided) Incoming Grades 7-8 & 9-12 Sunday – Thursday 7:30 pm – 9:45 pm *The Parish will host a potluck dinner at 5:30pm on Wednesday, June 15, where T-shirts will be available for purchase. WHAT IS TOTUS TUUS? The Totus Tuus parish summer catechetical program, a week-long “parish mission” for Catholic youth in the Catholic faith through evangelization, catechesis, apologetics, Christian witness, the sacraments, Marian devotion, and Eucharistic worship. Totus Tuus accomplishes this through college students and seminarians that engage the youth of the parish with skits, songs, games and inspiring, interactive teaching. Totus Tuus instructs young people in the basic tenets of the Catholic faith to cultivate both a firm intellectual grounding and a solid personal relationship with Christ. TOTALLY YOURS Totus Tuus, a Latin phrase meaning “totally yours,” was the motto of the late, great Pope John Paul II. Taken from St. Louis de Montfort’s work, True Devotion to Mary, it signifies our desire to give ourselves entirely to Jesus Christ through the hands of our Blessed Mother Mary. It also expresses our effort to give all that we have to every young person we encounter. Totus Tuus seeks to inspire in young people a true longing for holiness, a deep desire for daily conversion, and an openness to their vocation by challenging them to give themselves entirely to Jesus Christ through Mary and by continually strengthening their prayer lives in imitation of Her. CURRICULUM The Totus Tuus program has divided the four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church into a six year cycle. Additionally each summer is dedicated to the mysteries of the Rosary. In 2016, Totus Tuus will cover: Theme: Prayer & The Our Father Mysteries: The Glorious Mysteries .

33-Day Preparation for Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary Following the itinerary of Saint Louis Marie Grignon de Montfort with selections of writings from the Popes and Saints 1 Introduction Saint Louis de Montfort set forth a revolution of spirituality in teaching us about Marian consecration and giving us a 33-day plan to prepare our souls for that big step. What is this consecration? He described this consecration as being a form of “slavery” to Mary. Slavery means that we do nothing without her. We choose not to have a will apart from hers. He even invites us to wear a chain to signify that close bond with her. He elaborated the various consequences of that bond, saying that we share everything with her including our prayers, our intentions, our actions, and our merits. Fundamentally he is saying that we choose to become totally dependent on her: we receive everything through her and share everything with her. At first this sounds radical and may even sound a little scary or seem like a lot of work. As we come to understand the way the spirit of the world has infected our thinking, however, and as we get in touch with our own woundedness, we come to discover that this is a merciful gift from heaven. It is a sweet path of salvation. In fact, it is better than we could have ever hoped for! What it means is that there is a sweet, loving, perfect mother who actually wants to live in this kind of close relationship with us.

The Perfect Consecration to Jesus Christ through Mary According to the Teachings of St. Louis Marie de Montfort By Fr. Thomas Steinke The Importance of Making the Consecration to Jesus through Mary I am basing my conference today on the book "True Devotion to Mary" which is universally acclaimed as the single greatest and most theologically authoritative book on the Blessed Virgin Mary ever to have been written. In it De Montfort says that “the formation and education of the great saints who will come at the end of the world are reserved to her, for only this singular and wondrous virgin can produce in union with the Holy Spirit singular and wondrous things.”1 Literally, you could be one of those great saints and will be one of those great saints if you live out this consecration. After today’s talk, you should have a very good idea of how to live out this consecration and thus become a great saint. Papal Support I want to begin by talking about the importance of making the consecration to Mary according to the method of St. Louis Marie de Montfort. Since as Catholics we believe the Holy Spirit guides the Church in its papal documents, I want to establish papal support for this devotion. Pope Leo XIII encouraged everyone to make acts of consecration to the Virgin Mary based on the method of Saint Louis de Montfort. He also beatified de Montfort in 1888, adopted de Montfort's Marian terminology (calling Mary the "Mediatrix" and "Co-Redemptrix"), and wrote no less than ten encyclicals on the Rosary.

Catholic Doctrine and Teaching Regarding Mary Mariology is the study of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and of her role in Salvation History. Mary is viewed by Catholics as having a unique dignity among saints. Due to her maternal relationship to Christ and to the fact that she was conceived without original sin, Catholics believe Mary is entitled to Hyperdulia, that is an extraordinary level of veneration, as opposed to Dulia, a Greek term for the honor given to other saints. The field of Mariology includes dogmatic and theological studies of Mary, and also the study of the veneration of Mary in popular piety, including prayer, art, liturgy, hymns, shrines, and other devotions. The tradition of devotions associated with Catholic devotion to Mary are so extensive they require many more pages to expound. This page covers only the following topics as they relate to the Blessed Virgin Mary: 1) Dogmatic and Doctrinal teachings 2) Teachings and Writings of Saints 3) Pronouncements of Popes and Councils Dogmatic Teachings Concerning Mary There are four Marian teachings that have defined as De Fide Definita doctrines, or solemnly pronounced dogmas of the Faith. The Catholic Church teaches many truths about Mary, derived from the scriptures and traditions of the early Church, but only these four doctrines are considered dogmatic teaching. It was through the Blessed Virgin Mary that Jesus came into the world, and it is also through her that he must reign in the world. 2. Because Mary remained hidden during her life she is called by the Holy Spirit and the Church "Alma Mater", Mother hidden and unknown. So great was her humility that she desired nothing more upon earth than to remain unknown to herself and to others, and to be known only to God. 3. In answer to her prayers to remain hidden, poor and lowly, God was pleased to conceal her from nearly every other human creature in her conception, her birth, her life, her mysteries, her resurrection and assumption. Her own parents did not really know her; and the angels would often ask one another, "Who can she possibly be?", for God had hidden her from them, or if he did reveal anything to them, it was nothing compared with what he withheld. 4. God the Father willed that she should perform no miracle during her life, at least no public one, although he had given her the power to do so. God the Son willed that she should speak very little although he had imparted his wisdom to her. Even though Mary was his faithful spouse, God the Holy Spirit willed that his apostles and evangelists should say very little about her and then only as much as was necessary to make Jesus known.
