Yu. Lermontov's oeuvre. Various aspects in perception and semantic transformation of classical literary works of M. Yu. Lermontov in multi-ethnic environment are studied, namely: transformation of classics into national mythology, where the poet becomes an eternal image of the Russian literature and an “eternal satellite” of the Russian life. Methodological instrumentarium of intertextual and comparative approach allows juxtaposing the key motifs and images of selected authors, identifying typological correlations and differences between the prevailing principles in artistic thought of various writers, reveal dynamics and peculiarities in perception of the artistic axiology of M. Yu. Lermontov in the social and cultural context of the 20th century and showing the original features of complex, deeply nationally representative artistic world view, whose constants formed a foundation of the archetypal image of a Russian Poet. -

This study presents the view that, while the novel is much more than a simple expression of Byronism, understanding the basic Byronic traits and Lermontov1s own modification of them is essential for a true comprehension of the novel. Each of the first five chapters is devoted to a scrutiny of the separate tales that make up A Hero of Our Time. The basic Byronic motifs of storms, poses and exotic settings are examined in each part with commentary on some Lermontovian variations on them. -

The freedom loving Russian Romantic poet and author of the novel Geroi nashego vremeni (1840, Hero of Our Time), which had a deep influence on later Russian writers. Lermontov was exiled twice to the Caucasus because of his libertarian verses. He died in a duel like his great contemporary, the poet Aleksandr Pushkin. Mikhail Lermontov was born in Moscow, the son of Yuri Petrovich Lermontov, a poor army officer, and Maria Mikhailovna Lermontova, an heiress to rich estates, who belonged to the prominent Stolypin family. The Lermontovs claimed descent from the Learmonths in Scotland. Maria Mihkailovna died of consumption in 1817; her marriage had lasted barely four years. After her death, Lermontov's father left his son's upbringing to Yelizaveta Alexeyevna Arsenyeva, his wealthy grandmother. In the new home he became the subject of family disputes between his grandmother and father, who was not allowed to participate in the upbringing. Lermontov received an extensive education at home, but it included doubtful aspects: in his childhood he was dressed in a girl's frock to act as a model for a painter. At the age of fourteen Lermontov moved to Moscow, where he entered a boarding school for the sons of the nobility. At the Moscow University he started to write poetry under the influence of Lord Byron, adapting the Byronic cult of personality. One of Lermontov's first loves during this period was Ekaterina Sushkova, who did not reciprocate his feelings. -

SHCHERBATOVA Lermontov: The Failure of Humanism In this article, Lermontov is viewed as one who expresses ideas of humanism not associated with any social class or cast that was typical for the aristocratic period of the Russian culture. The article discusses the situation when the orientation of the democratic criticism—dominant at the time—at the understanding of humanism that had only limited association with a specific class did not contribute to the realization of humanist ideals, leading instead to social disintegration, and a nihilistic neglect of culture and identity. These views imply a tension between the worship of an ordinary human being and the worship of the divine; but what happens when the divide between humanity and divinity is eliminated, and a mortal object of idolatry becomes the ultimate ideal? More specifically, what effect does this kind of worship– more typically known to our society as “fandom” – have on the development of an aesthetic philosophy that is already culturally imbued with considerations of divine ideals? Two centuries after Shakespeare, Lord Byron begins to address these questions even as he himself, the first major celebrity in Western culture, raises them. -

Henk van Houtum Radboud University Nijmegen Human Geography, specialisation ‘Conflicts, Territories, and Identities’ Word count (excl. table of contents, bibliography, etc.): 34.513. i ii PREFACE On February 25th, 2019, after a four and half hour flight from Amsterdam, I landed at Tbilisi’s international airport. Walking up to the passport control booth after alighting the plane, it struck me that there was not one, but two officers at work there. Evidently, the young Georgian customs officer was being trained by her more experienced peer. Both officers’ uniforms were adorned with flags in red and white; those of their country. The older officer, however, clearly disseminating his experience to new employees, did not wear a flag on his shoulder that should endow him with any legal authority in Georgia. He was Austrian. Experienced customs officers from EU-countries training younger ones from various other countries shouldn’t be a particularly noteworthy occurrence. However, while an Austrian - clearly European - flag need not provide one with any particular legal standing, the discursive story is a little more complicated. After an interaction that lasted little more than a minute - EU-citizens are rarely questioned upon entering Georgia - the Georgian officer stamped an outline of the Georgian territory into my document of identity. The casual traveller could be easily forgiven for believing the Georgian borders are as straightforward as this simple outline suggests. “Here is Georgia, and only once you cross one of these lines, you are in another country (or possibly at the bottom of the Black Sea),” the stamp seems to suggest. -

Martin Luther In Russian literature, the 1820s and 1830s were the high point of Romantic involvement with folk culture and poetry, with national roots and national history. Among numerous works which appeared as the result of such involvement, Lermontov's 1837 poem «Песня про царя Ивана Василь- евича, молодого опричника и удалого купца Калашникова» (further referred to as "The Song") is one more example and, typically for Lermontov, a belated one. Western scholarship has basically ignored the poem,1 while Russian * Vladimir Golstein, born in Moscow and educated at Columbia and Yale Universities, now teaches at Oberlin College. His article on Pushkin's Mozart and Salieri has been published in Russian Literature (Feb. 1991). 1 The only examples I know are John Mersereau Jr.'s article "M. Ju. Lermontov's 'The Song of the Merchant Kalashnikov': An Allegorical Interpretation," California Slavic Studies, vol. I (1960) and John Garrard's Mikhail Lermontov (Boston, 1982). I shall contest a number of Garrard's observations on "The Song" which are contained in his subchapter devoted to it (pp. 113-119). Child of the Age or Little Napoleon? Two Russian Responses to The Red and the Black JONATHAN BROOKS PLATT In the early 1830s a new character emerged in the European novel: the social aspirant, who is passionately driven yet also disciplined and cunning. Ralph Waldo Emerson would later dub the real-world models of such characters “little Napoleons,” reflecting their frequent devotion to the original parvenu of postrevolutionary Europe.1 Epitomized by Julien Sorel in Stendhal’s The Red and the Black, the little Napoleon can be seen as an evolutionary link between the Byron’s titanic outcasts (not to mention romantic images of Napoleon himself) and the transgressive, would-be “superman” that fascinated writers and philosophers later in the century. In the Russian tradition, the two works that first responded to Stendhal’s innovation are Pushkin’s “The Queen of Spades” (1833) and Lermontov’s unfinished novel, Princess Ligovskaya (1836). Numerous scholars have noted the resemblances between “The Queen of Spades” and The Red and the Black.2 Pushkin praised Stendhal’s novel in a letter soon after it appeared in 1830, and his story can be connected to it on a number of levels.3 The strongest textual reminiscence—hard to miss, one thinks, considering the proximity of the texts’ publication— occurs when Hermann plagiarizes love letters during his underhanded courtship of Lizaveta, the old countess’ ward.
