Resta quindi nelle giovanili dell'Atalanta fino al 1997, quando passa al Lecce, da cui però si dimette nel febbraio 1998, dopo 18 gare. Seguono due stagioni al Verona, con una promozione in Serie A e un nono posto, quindi due anni con il Venezia, che porta subito in Serie A, ma nella massima serie viene esonerato dopo 5 partite. -
