La squadra si radunerà entro le ore 12 di venerdì 2 giugno, mentre il programma dettagliato verrà ufficializzato lunedì 29 maggio. Tornano in gruppo il centrocampista del Milan Riccardo Montolivo, dopo l’infortunio subìto lo scorso 6 ottobre nel match con la Spagna, e Stephan El Shaarawy, già convocato dal Ct in occasione dell’ultimo stage. I cinque giocatori della Juventus (Buffon, Bonucci, Chiellini, Barzagli e Marchisio), che il 3 giugno a Cardiff saranno impegnati nella finale della UEFA Champions League, si aggregheranno al gruppo lunedì 5 giugno, giorno in cui altri Azzurri lasceranno a loro volta il ritiro. Per la seconda volta nella sua storia la Nazionale giocherà a Nizza; all’Allianz Riviera scenderanno in campo due tra le squadre più titolate: 4 Mondiali, 1 Europeo, 1 Medaglia d’oro Olimpica per l’Italia; 2 Mondiali, 15 Coppa America, 2 Medaglie d’oro Olimpiche per l’Uruguay. L’unico precedente degli Azzurri a Nizza risale all’amichevole con l’Austria del 20 agosto 2008, una gara disputata al vecchio Stadio Municipale ‘du Ray’ e terminata con il risultato di 2‐2. Sono 10 invece gli scontri diretti con l’Uruguay e il bilancio per la nostra Nazionale è negativo: 2 successi, 4 pareggi e 4 sconfitte, tra le quali il ko in semifinale alle Olimpiadi del 1928 e quello nell’ultima sfida giocata il 24 giugno 2014 a Natal decisivo per l’eliminazione dell’Italia dal Mondiale brasiliano. Sarà questo il quinto confronto tra Italia e Uruguay disputato in campo neutro, dopo quelli in Olanda, Messico e Brasile; solo una volta gli Azzurri hanno affrontato la ‘Celeste’ in Uruguay, nello ‘Stadio Centenario’ di Montevideo nel Mundialito (Coppa d’Oro dei Campioni del Mondo) nel gennaio del 1981. Per quanto riguarda la gara di qualificazione, gli Azzurri giocheranno per l’ottava volta nella loro storia a Udine, dove sono imbattuti avendo collezionato 5 successi e 2 pareggi, compreso l’1‐1 in amichevole con la Spagna nell’ultimo incontro disputato lo scorso 24 marzo. L’unico precedente dell’Italia con il Liechtenstein risale invece alla gara giocata due mesi fa a Vaduz, terminata con il successo per 4‐0.
