List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. Registries also are considered the authority as to whether a given breed is listed as Light or saddle horse breeds a "horse" or a "pony". There are also a number of "color breed", sport horse, and gaited horse registries for horses with various phenotypes or other traits, which admit any animal fitting a given set of physical characteristics, even if there is little or no evidence of the trait being a true-breeding characteristic. Other recording entities or specialty organizations may recognize horses from multiple breeds, thus, for the purposes of this article, such animals are classified as a "type" rather than a "breed". BLOODLINE © www.tuttoarabi.com RUSSIA ARABIAN HORSES AND THE CAVALRY Many Russian breeders in the 1700s and 1800s had the necessary expertise and huge resources to use the Arabian horse as a foundation for the creation of many breeds. In fact, the Arabian heralded in a new era for these astute breeders. They utilised these wonderful animals to increase the endurance, movement, working ability, soundness, and thriftiness, as well as beauty of their native stock. It was noted the Arabian had the amazing ability to transmit these outstanding characteristics onto their descendants for several generations. In fact, the Arabian had a phenomenal effect on Russia’s horse breeding activities. The Orlov Trotter (and Orlov Riding Horse) is one of Russia’s most famous breeds and was founded by the Arabian stallions Smetanka and Saltan I. The grey Smetanka, reputed to be a magnificent horse, was purchased by Count Alexis Orlov-Chesmenskii from a Turkish pasha in 1774. Smetanka travelled to Count Orlov’s Khrenovoya Stud in Russia with a military escort, the journey taking two years to complete. Smetanka only stood at stud in 1777 and was crossed with a Danish mare to start the foundation of the Orlov Trotter breed. The chestnut stallion Saltan I came to Russia from Arabia in 1775 and died in 1776, leaving three sons (confusingly named Saltan) and one daughter to carry on his influence as co-founder of the Orlov Trotter. Count Orlov also imported many other horses of Oriental blood to Artwork by Karen Hodges. his Khrenovoya Stud. The characteristics of the Orlov Trotter appeared to mirror in many respects the excellent features found in their Arabian ancestors. -

294 KUSTANAI (Kustanaiskaya) The Kustanai was developed in the steppes of western Kazakhstan at the collective-farm and state-farm studs. The breeding nucleus is concentrated at Kustanai and Maikulski studs. Its development dates from 1887 to 1951. The first date is the year of establishment of the state-owned stud, the Turgai; it was followed by the Kustanai in 1888 and the Orenburg in 1890. The last is the date of official recognition of the Kustanai breed. The new breed was developed by crossing native Kazakh steppe horses with Don, Strelets, Astrakhan (improved Kalmyk) and halfbred Thoroughbred stallions. Nevertheless, at the onset the crossbreeding was unsuccessful. Only after the nucleus of local brood mares, improved by pure breeding and regular creep-feeding, was formed at Kustanai stud did crossbreeding with Thoroughbreds yield a positive result. In the 1920s they began to develop a new breed at Kustanai stud. The work was continued in the 1930s with two systems of management. The first involved keeping in stables and on pastures, winter grazing in good weather, abundant hay and concentrate 295 feeding, hand mating and weaning of the foals at 6-8 months. The other involved improved taboon keeping, year-round grazing and keeping in sheds in bad weather, free mating, hay and concentrate creep-feeding. The first method was employed at Kustanai and Troitski studs and the second at the Maikulski and other studs. The breeding work was directed at developing simultaneously two types - saddle and steppe. The saddle type included horses with a high proportion of Thoroughbred blood, while the steppe type consisted of Thoroughbred- Don-Kazakh and other crossbreds bred inter se. -

Skryabin, 109472 Moscow, Russia Abstract. The predominant coat colors in Vyatka horse breed are bay-brown (69.6 %) and mousey (20.8 %). Among the genotyped livestock, three genotypes of the base bay coat color (EE/AA, EE/Aa, Ee/AA) and two genotypes of the base solid blackcock (EE/a/a, Ee/aa) have been detected. The proportion of horses with Cr allele is 2.1 %. In Vyatka horse breed, three isabelline-brown horses (Cr/Cr) have been recorded and the presence of W20n allele was detected. Among the horses genotyped, 35.5 % are DD homozygous, 61.3 % are heterozygous (Dd1, Dd2), 3.2 % have the nd2/nd2 genotype. Allele d2 against the background of D does not always cause the presence of “wild” markings, unlike D/D. The influence of Dun-factor on the depigmentation area has not been detected. 39.9 % of horses have white markings (including 30 % of stallions), which are mainly facial markings (59.8 %), less often they are leg markings (21.6 %) or both facial and leg markings (18, 6 %). 1 Introduction At the same time, the chestnut (red and brown) coat color has become rather rare in the breed. -

We are already working on classlist changes for next season. In the last ten years, we have tried to maintain class numbers and just apply bandaids when issues crop up. One issue is balance – some classes (e.g. Division A, class 1: light breed stallions) are huge, and while a qualifier judge may split the class, the class remains crazy-large in the annual championship. Should division A have a different class list than the other divisions? Also, showers are sometimes not sure which breed classes to put their horses in and judges want to judge like against like – and not have Haflingers showing up in three different breed classes for example! Mustangs are another problem – the classlist we inherited specifies “all mustangs” should be shown in the “stock” division, even though Spanish mustangs may look more like Spanish horses than stock horses (i.e. -

306 TRAKEHNER (Trakenenskaya) The Trakehner saddle breed was developed in East Prussia from 1786 to 1878. The first date refers to the transfer of Trakehnen stud to state ownership and to the appearance of Lindenau who set forth clear-cut breeding objectives and began practical work on the improvement of the local horse population. The second date refers to starting the Trakehner studbook. At Trakehnen stud the aim was the development of a large cavalry ho<rse to be used for the improvement of working and saddle characteristics in utility horses. After this the Trakehner became the improver of the East Prussian, Hanoverian and Mecklenburg breeds. The basis for the Trakehner breed was the native Lithuanian horses which had been improved by stallions of various breeds, including the Thoroughbred, Mecklenburg, Danish and Turkish. The final stage of breed 307 formation was strongly influenced by a Turkmenian stallion and by three of his sons. Later the emerging Trakehner was profoundly influenced by Thoroughbred stallions. By the late 19th century the Trakehner became one of the best high-grade saddle horses well adapted to keeping in stables or on pasture. It became a leading improver in the vast region of Lithuania, Brandenburg, Poznan and Pomerania. By the early 20th century the Trakehner's influence reached the north Baltic area but was cut short by World War One. Breeding of the Trakehner was resumed in the USSR in 1945 at S.M. Kirov stud in Rostov region. The Trakehner admirably acclimatized to new climatic conditions and its improvement has progressed ever since. At present the Trakehner is used in classic sports events and in initial crossbreeding with such breeds as the Ukrainian Saddle, Hanoverian and the riding type of Latvian. -
