When we face economic uncertainty we prepare prudently without sacrificing essential needs. Most Arkan- sans I know would rather extend the life of an old truck or eat out less rather than just stop paying their mortgage. Unfortunately, the Obama administration seems to lack Arkansas common sense. Re- cently, they were faced Tom with modest spending Cotton reductions of $85 bil- United States lion from a $3.8 trillion Congressman budget. These spending reductions, known as the sequester, cut the Federal Aviation Adminis- tration budget by about 5 percent. In response to this modest spending reduc- tion, the FAA announced it would close 149 local airport contract control towers. Contract towers are air traffic control towers operated by a private company but funded by the FAA. In Arkansas, we have four contract control towers, two of which will be closed because of seques- ter. These towers are important for the safety of the flying public and for local economies. This past week I visited Texarkana airport, one of the two slated for closure. I toured the control tower and learned more about their daily operations and how the FAA’s actions will impact the 4th district and all Arkansans. Texarkana and all contract towers serve as a gateway to distant markets for local businesses, as a primary link between rural communities and the larger aviation network, and as a criti- cal backup to some of our country’s busiest airports. A look at the facts suggest that President Obama is playing politics with air safety, just like he shut down White House tours to punish visit- ing school children, rather than require some belt-tightening among his own staff.
