The Min Sung Kim International Award was presented to Verania Willis of Costa Rica, who graduated in May with honors with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Willis is a GSAC Scholar, a Who’s Who honoree and was CBU’s first NAIA Volleyball Player of the Year.

Numerous other awards were presented for outstanding academics and leadership. Matthew Leonard, a double-major in Philosophy and Applied Theology, swept the student awards with three achievements. Chad Collins as engages in “fourth wall” conversations with the audience and God during CBU Theater Arts’ production of “Fiddler on the Roof”.

Sold out performances at the close of a two-week run brought CBU Theater Art’s performance of “Fiddler on the Roof” to an encore performance on Monday, April 7. Crowd-pleasing tempos kept play-goers humming to the famous Broadway musical tunes, while Chad Collins delighted audience members with his portrayal of the lovable patriarch, Tevye. Jeff Lewis is named Faculty Member of the Year at CBU’s 2008 Honors Convocation on April 9. The play’s scenes take place in the Jewish village of Anatevka in Tsarist Russia in 1905 and center on the character of Tevye, a poor milkman, and his daughters’ marriages. Tevye speaks and sings not only of the difficulties of being poor but also of the Jewish community’s constant fear of harassment from their non-Jewish neighbors. Tevye breaks the theater’s “fourth wall” by talking at times directly to the audience or to God for the audience’s benefit. Older audience members recalled the 1971 film portrayal of the Tevye character made famous by Chaim Topol, a renowned Israeli theatrical and film performer.

The “Fiddler” performances featured nearly 60 performers and a 12-member orchestra from CBU’s Collinsworth School of Music. “They gave each other a pledge, unheard of…absurd! They gave each other a pledge, unthinkable! Tradition!”

So sang Chad Collins, CBU sophomore, as he played the lead role of Teyve during CBU Theater Arts’ production of “Fiddler on the Roof” in April. The famous Broadway musical portrays the challenges to life’s balance, relationships and faith, with lovable patriarch Teyve leading theatergoers through a range of familiar songs and emotions as his Tsarist-era Russian Jewish family and villagers experience dramatic changes. In this scene, Teyve is protesting his oldest daughter Tzeitel’s desire to marry Motel, the Tailor, for love—breaking with the turn-of-the-century custom of arranged marriages. cbustudents J une 2 0 0 8

CBU hosts movie screenings for pastors- faculty,- students and staff Ben Stein visited CBU on February 4 to introduce his new film “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed” in pre-theater screenings at the Wallace Theater and to meet with faculty members at a dinner held in the Copenbarger Presidential Dining Room.

Stein spoke to more than 100 pastors, faculty and students who attended the afternoon screening of the film at CBU, while another 200 or more students and other members of the CBU community attended the private evening screening. Both events were free for invited members of the CBU community to attend, although producers of the film required audience members to sign a confidentiality agreement precluding release of any details of the film prior to its theatrical debut in April.

Stein, a longtime actor and onetime law professor, talked to CBU audiences about why he chose to co-write and star in a film that could be controversial. Stein, who is Jewish, said he was outraged when he discovered that prominent scientists and educators around the country were being dismissed from their positions for exploring the idea of “intelligent design” as an alternate theory to Darwinism. Intelligent Design, or “ID” for short, proposes that there is evidence of an “intelligent designer” in nature, and, consequently, that traditionally accepted scientific theories like Darwinian evolution fall short in addressing such possibilities.

“Scientists are supposed to be allowed to follow their evidence wherever it leads them, regardless of the implications,” Stein said. The “Expelled” movie follows Stein’s travels around the globe to find out why scientists are reportedly being discriminated against for studying or discussing Intelligent Design.

Heim was 40 when he earned his bachelor’s degree at CBC, was 50 when he earned his master’s degree in educational counseling and guidance from CSUSB in 1997, and was 60 when he completed coursework for his Ed.D. in counseling psychology at Argosy University in 2007. His dissertation is a qualitative study of middle school counselor knowledge and implementation of empirically supported interventions for classroom inattention among ADHD diagnosed students.

It’s a subject that Heim knows a lot about from his 10 years as a middle school counselor at Badger Springs Middle School in the Moreno Valley Unified School District. Heim provides individual and group counseling services to the nearly 400 students on his case load. In addition, he provides a daily paragraph of character education on the school’s public address system called “The Gear Up Moment.”

Heim and his wife, Frieda, have, for the past two years traveled to the hill country of western North Carolina for a week of folk classes in Appalachian Art. His family also includes daughter Heather; her husband, John, their daughter, Holly; and their two sons, Greyson and Isaac, and daughter Sheila and her husband, Rob. In a quest to expose students to art, Merrill Heim provides an annual art contest for students, “…since all music and art programs have been removed from our school,” he said.
