He hosts several ​ podcasts (The Hound Tall Discussion Series, The Endless Honeymoon Podcast with ​ ​ ​ ​ wife Natasha Leggero, and the dearly departed Champs podcast), has written and ​ ​ produced for TV (Another Period, Wet Hot American Summer, Little America, and ​ ​ the upcoming Betty on HBO), appeared as an actor on numerous shows (Portlandia, ​ ​ ​ The League, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and more), and even hosted his own show, ​ Problematic, for Comedy Central. All that stuff is cool and all, but today, he shares the ​ thing he's best at. Crowd Work. ​ ​ Often maligned as a lazy move, or something designed to kill time during a set, crowd work is not acknowledged as the elemental part of the stand up art form that it is. Or, perhaps that’s because many have only been exposed to hacky or lazy crowd work. To see a master at work is, as Moshe claims in his new album, Crowd Surfing, akin to ​ ​ seeing a jazz great go off the page and do a solo. So it is in the spirit of some of his fellow crowd work masters, such as Patrice O’Neal, Paula Poundstone, Todd Barry, and Don Rickles, that Moshe brings his razor sharp quick wit to this fully crowd-work driven album that functions like a semi-concept album - going beyond the “Who are you and what do you do for a living" trope and into the wildest stories this Washington D.C. crowd had to offer. It gets weird. It's an hour of the intimate interplay between performer and audience that traverses pressing topics like beer bongin' colt 45 and molesting a giraffe while on molly - some of the stories are hard to believe. A shout from the audience? Unwarranted. No, thank you. You don't have a microphone or a spotlight on you, nor audience members paying to see you, so please, do keep your comments to yourself. Replace those word noises with giggles and laughs and we're all happy. Some shows deflect any negative impulse by incorporating feedback into their very structure, either from the host or from other performers. Think of The Benson Interruption on Comedy Central or in theaters, where Doug Benson sat onstage with microphone still in hand while his guests told jokes or stories. MST3K made it all about the performers enhancing sub-par movies with top- notch riffing. Now picture this. Or, rather: Picture This! Hosted and co-created by Brandie Posey (co-host of the Lady to Lady podcast) with Sam Varela, Picture This! features animators and cartoonists on the side of the stage drawing up art on an overhead projector that accompanies, illustrates or comments upon what the stand-up comedian is saying in real time. Or not, even? Picture This! began in Los Angeles in 2012 and since has franchised monthly or regular shows in New York City, San Francisco and Portland, Ore. -- traveled to Melbourne's International Comedy Festival in 2013 and hit five different comedy festivals in 2015. Mandee Johnson here, one of the producers and creators of The Super Serious Show. Joel Mandelkorn, my co-producer and partner is here too... We started The Super Serious Show in the summer of 2010 at a time when the independent comedy scene in Los Angeles was lacking shows presented and produced outside established comedy venues. We set out to build a stand-up show that represented everything we loved. An hour pre-party with great music, an amazing food truck for cheap eats, free beer/wine, and a well curated lineup. We are not comedians. We are producers. I’m also a photographer... Obviously. The portraits started off with a simple goal: document the comedians on the show. To capture each comedian at this time and place I took two 4x5 Polaroids (one serious and one silly) at The Super Serious Show. Over the last nine years the series has grown, the portraits are an iconic symbol of the show and the independent comedy. It also became a deeply personal series to me - it not only documents the comedians themselves but a moment in time in comedy history. To be clear, we didn’t start this show with big plans. We started it to be a part of the comedy community. I definitely didn’t start shooting the portraits to create a series with over 1,000 portraits, but here we are. Our lives are intertwined with this world- relationships dating back before marriages, pre-kids..
