THE COLLEGE ahishadal Raj College is the third oldest college in the undivided district of MMidnapore and fiftieth one under . The College was founded on August 1, 1946 byKumar Debaprasad Garga Bahadur , the "Raja" of Mahishadal and a celebrity in the field of music and fine arts. Now the college is affiliated to Vidyasagar University since 01.06.1985, vide letter no. 983-Edn (U) dt. 23.05.1985. Situated only twenty kilometers from both Haldia (a potential industrial town of W.B.) and Tamluk (the district headquarter of Purba Medinipur) the college has immensely benefited from its location in a pleasant, placid countryside. The college has now started its Community College Programme and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya kaushal Kendra affiliated to the MINISTRY OF HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT, GOVT. MISSIONS & OBJECTIVES The logo of the college properly reflects its missions. They are Wisdom, Values and Progress. Founded by the Mahishadal Raj during the days of fierce freedom movement at Mahishadal to enable the poor mofussil boys and girls to promote their higher studies at a very low cost (“after matriculation they had to give up higher studies due to prohibitive cost of education in the metropolis”) and to bring prosperity in the area by diffusing the light of education and to inculcate high moral values, the college to-day is also committed to providing excellence in education at the undergraduate level and Post Graduate lavel in order to empower the rural youth with breadth of knowledge and depth of experience that provide meaningful contribution to their career and also to the community. For this purpose, during the last six decades, the college geared all its academic and extension activities in this direction. On receipt of the applications, a merit list is prepared and the admission is made strictly on the basis of merit. Govt. criteria in respect of reservation of seats for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and handicapped students are strictly followed. Economics Hons. is not offered to a candidate who had not passed in Mathematics in the qualifying examination. For Accountancy Hons. a student must obtain at least 45% marks in Mathematics either in the Madhyamik Pariksha or in +2 stage. ● After the merit list is published the students are to get themselves admitted within stipulated date and time, failing which their candidatures are liable to be cancelled. ● Any admission is provisional and will be cancelled for any mistake or suppression of facts. The decision of the college authority in this respect, will be final. ● Admission forms and prospectus will be available from the college office on production of original Mark Sheet. ● For each Hons. subject separate application form will have to be submitted. ● Incomplete application forms will be cancelled. The following documents must be submitted along with every form : i) One attested copy ofAdmit Card of Madhyamik/Equivalent Examination. ii) One attested copy of H.S./Equivalent mark sheet. iii) One attested copy of Character Certificate of the institution last attended. iv) One attested copy of SC/ST/OBC/PH Certificate (where applicable). v) One Passport size photograph. ● Production of the original mark sheet at the time of admission is obligatory. ● Admission may be cancelled if a student fails to attend at least 20% classes in the first one month of the commencement of classes. ● The college authority may, at any time rusticate a student who is found unruly or indisciplined.

(b) Selection will be made strictly on the basis of merit. Marks obtained in Honours will be the sole criteria. Honours candidates of the current session and the immediately preceding session will be considered equally. In the case of equal marks in honours,total marks/percentage of immediately preceding Examination are to be taken into account for ranking. (c) Quota for SC/ST will be considered as per Govt. order 906 Edn/Estt dated 18.09.1997.Number of seats (SC - 22% , ST - 6% ,) will be calculated and considered separately for 60% seats of V.U. students and 40% seats for Open Competition. Fraction of 0.5% or more will be rounded to the next whole number. In case of non - availability of candidates of SC category, the seats reserved for SC may be converted to ST category and vice versa. Rules Relating to the Revised Examination System w.e.f. 2006-07 INTRODUCTION OF INTERNAL ASSESSMENT SYSTEM AT COLLEGE LEVEL: Internal Assessment at college level for Hons. & Gen. theoretical paper except Compl. English, MIL& Environmental Studies for which the students appear in their Part-I /Part-II/Part-III Examination will be introduced from the Session 2006-07.

The modalities of awarding such marks are given below : (I) The total marks allotted for such internal assessment is fixed at 10 (Ten) for each theory paper of 100. For paper of less than 100 marks, the marks of internal assessment will be proportionately less.

(II) These marks should be awarded to the students by all the subject teachers of their own college on the basis of marks obtained by them in class tests taken periodically. The programme of the class test will have to be distributed evently throughout the entire session.

(III) The total marks of each class test will be 20 (Twenty) and the total time allotted will be 45 minutes i.e. one class period.

(IV) The number of such class tests held throughout the session shall not be less than 2 (Two) per paper for each year of Honours Course students and not less then 1 (One) per paper for each year of General Course students.

(V) The blank answer papers will be supplied by the college authorities. After completion of evaluation process, the answer paper will have to be preserved by the college authorities so that the University authorities can inspect the same at any time.

(VI) These marks on internal assessment for the theoretical papers separately will have to be sent to the Controller of Examinations of the University before the final examination, the last date of which will be fixed by the Controller of Examinations. No marks will be accepted after such last dates are over. The marks should be in full integer.

(VII)Examinations related to the Postgraduate Courses are conducted by the University guidelines.

(VIII) In case of P.G. Courses the number of class test held throughout session shall not be less than 02 (Two) per paper for each semester.

MEDICAL FACILITIES The college has established a “Medical and First Aid Centre” of its own which is regularly attended by a registered medical practitioners. He also attends the inmates of the hostels. General medicine is provided free of cost to any student or staff falling ill during college hours. Govt. Hospital is situated at a stone throwing distance and the students are rushed there in no time if exigency so demands. First-Aid care is all time available. Moreover, the college has signed a MOU with “Bipanna Bandhu”, a local charitable organization for ambulance service, emergency trained staff for medical care, Oxygen Cylinder etc. The Medical Officer is Dr. Asim Pradhan, M.B.B.S. HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION

The college runs two hostels–one for the boys and other for the girls. They are well governed by the teacher superintendents. Admission is made strictly on the basis of distance from the student’s residence. Priorities are given to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and handicapped students. No married student is allowed to stay in a hostel. Any unsuccessful candidate in any University Exam. will be given one more chance to overstay in the hostel. The rules and regulations laid down by the Hostel Committee are obligatory to the inmates of the hostel.

CAREER COUNSELLING & PLACEMENT CENTRE The centre negotiates with different industrial plants in Haldia and elsewhere for the industrial training of the students of Industrial Chemistry. Mahishadal Raj College Praktan Chhatra-Chhatri Association was established in 1997 in the concluding ceremony of the Golden Jubilee of the college. Cultural Department: This is one of the most important department of the Students' Union. This department conducts its round the year activities keeping in mind the cultural tradition of our beloved country. This department organizes various cultural competitions throughout the year like Recitation competition, Dance Competition, Sangeet Competition, Tabla Lahara Competition, Rangoli Competition etc. Throughout the year this department encourages the participation of the students in Inter collegiate Cultural Competition at the affiliating Universities. Students of our College generally do very well in this competition and thereby make the institution proud. Magazine & Literature Department: Under the supervision of a Professor-in-charge the members of the departmental Sub-Committee regularly bring out Wall-Magazine at regular interval to suit the mood of seasonal flavour. This department publishes an Annual Magazine, 'Amitrakshar' to which students both of the current year as well as of the past years, and the teaching staff contribute their original compositions. This magazine maintains a standard of its own. Common Room Department: This department mainly takes care of the arrangement of various competition regarding indoor games for the students. The teaching and non-teaching staff of our College jointly participate in these competitions. Games & Sports Department: This department is in charge of arrangement for various competition on outdoor games for the students. The teaching and non-teaching staff of our College jointly participate in these competitions too. Throughout the year this department encourages the participation of the students in Intercollegiate Athletics Meet (Non-Govt.) and University Level Athletics Meet at the affiliating Universities. Bijnan Parishad Department: To encourage the students to wards science & technology this department arranges a high standard Debate Competition and Extempore Speech for the relevant topic every year for the students of the college. Student Welfare & Social Service Department (AID Fund Dept.): This department mainly caters to the needs of economically disadvantaged students. Student’s Union comes forward to help these students with books which they can retain till the completion of their course. Every session many students have been benefited by books from this Aid-Fund.and many ex- students who used to write in this magazine have later emerged as creative writers in their own right. a) VoluntaryBlood Donation Camp: The Blood Donation Camp, organized by the Students’ Union of the College was first held in 1984, the year when Smt. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India was assassinated by her security officer. From that point of time the Students’ Union has been organizing the Blood Donation Camp on 28* August every year to fill up the terrible scarcity of blood in the locality and to extend support Blood Donation Camp services to the disadvantaged patients of the community. During more than two decades these camps create a lot of enthusiasm and excitement in the mind of students, faculty and all other stakeholders of the college.

b) Distribution of Fruits in the Local Hospital On the “Sadbhawana Divas” (20th August), which is the birth day of Late Rajib Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, every year the Students’ Union leads the students of the College to visit the local Hospital (Basulia Rural Hospital) and students distribute fruits among the patients.

As a result the students get an opportunity for cultural exchange that causes the upliftment of students psychology. Last year 72 students of the college went to Rajasthan, Jaypur & Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Sonar Kella and enjoyed a lot. d) Rakhi Bandhan Utsab : Rakhi Bandhan Utsab is observed every year in order to develop an integration among students coming from different castes, creed and religion. It also helps develop a sweet relation among the students and the staff.

Educational Tour e) Students’Union Library : Considering the Socio-economic condition the Students’Union has established a library of its own, for the first time in any college in West Bengal from where the books are borrowed on daily issue basis. We have performed this significant achievement with the grateful support of all teaching, non-teaching staff, students, ex-students and well-wishers of our college. Through this “Union Library”, we want to enrich the creative skill, sound knowledge and academic ability of our students.
