Within Kthe United States, Kentucky’s native freshwater fish diversity is exceeded only by Alabama and Tennessee. This high diversity of native fishes corresponds to an abun- dance of water bodies and wide variety of aquatic habitats across the state – from swift upland streams to large sluggish rivers, oxbow lakes, and wetlands. Approximately 25 species are most frequently caught by anglers either for sport or food. Many of these species occur in streams and rivers statewide, while several are routinely stocked in public and private water bodies across the state, especially ponds and reservoirs. The largest proportion of Kentucky’s fish fauna (80%) includes darters, minnows, suckers, madtoms, smaller sunfishes, and other groups (e.g., lam- preys) that are rarely seen by most people. -

Minnesota Fish Taxonomic Key 2017 Edition Pictures from – NANFA (2017) Warren Lamb Aquatic Biology Program Bemidji State University Bemidji, MN 56601 Introduction Minnesota’s landscape is maze of lakes and river that are home to a recorded total of 163 species of fish. This document is a complete and current dichotomous taxonomic key of the Minnesota fishes. This key was based on the 1972 “Northern Fishes” key (Eddy 1972), and updated based on Dr. Jay Hatch’s article “Minnesota Fishes: Just How Many Are There?” (Hatch 2016). Any new species or family additions were also referenced to the 7th edition of the American Fisheries society “Names of North American Fishes” (Page et al. 2013) to assess whether a fish species is currently recognized by the scientific community. Identifying characteristics for new additions were compared to those found in Page and Burr (2011). In total five species and one family have been added to the taxonomic key, while three have been removed since the last publication. Species pictures within the keys have been provide from either Bemidji State University Ichthyology Students or North American Native Fish Association (NANFA). My hope is that this document will offer an accurate and simple key so anyone can identify the fish they may encounter in Minnesota. A Distributional Checklist of the Fishes of Kentucky BROOKS M. BURR Department of Zoology, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois 62901 ABSTRACT. —A compilation of records of fishes from Kentucky waters based on specimens deposited in museums, personal collecting, and accepted literature reports revealed that 229 species occur or did oc- cur in the state. A substantial amount of new distributional data is presented in the form of an annotated list including records of several species of fishes previously unreported from the state. Distributional statements in the checklist are based on individual spot maps completed for all Kentucky fishes. A list of five problematical species is included at the end of the checklist. INTRODUCTION The fish fauna of Kentucky is more diverse than that of any other in- land area of comparable size in North America except Tennessee and Alabama. Presently, 229 species are known to occur or to have occurred in Kentucky waters and only 10 or 11 are the result of introduction by man. A major factor contributing to the present completeness of our knowledge of the Kentucky fish fauna has been its rich history of ichthyological investigations going back to the time of one of North America's earliest ichthyologists, Constantine Samuel Rafinesque. Since Rafinesque's groundbreaking work on Ohio River valley fishes (1820) there have been four other reports on Kentucky fishes (Woolman 1892, Garman 1894, Evermann 1918, Clay 1975). Woolman's study is of im- mense historical value in documenting the distribution of many Ken- tucky fishes before most of the changes brought on by man took place. -

DROMEDARY PEARLYMUSSEL DROMEDARY PEARLYMUSSEL Dromus dromas SPECIES CODE: F00K I01 STATUS: On June 14, 1976, the dromedary pearlymussel was designated as endangered throughout its entire range in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia (USFWS 1976), except where listed as experimental populations (in the free-flowing reach of the Tennessee River below the Wilson Dam, Colbert and Lauderdale Counties, AL) (USFWS 2001). A recovery plan addressing the dromedary pearlymussel was approved in July 9, 1984 (USFWS 1984). SPECIES DESCRIPTION: The dromedary pearlymussel is a medium-sized (reaching up to 90 mm in length) freshwater mussel with a yellowish green shell with two sets of broken green rays. The life span of the species is greater than 50 years (USFWS 1984, VFWIS 2003). Like other freshwater mussels, the dromedary pearlymussel feeds by filtering food particles from the water column. The specific food habits of the species are unknown, but other juvenile and adult freshwater mussels have been documented to feed on detritus, diatoms, phytoplankton, and zooplankton (Churchill and Lewis 1924). The diet of dromedary pearlymussel glochidia, like other freshwater mussels, comprises water (until encysted on a fish host) and fish body fluids (once encysted). REPRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT: The reproductive cycle of the dromedary pearlymussel is similar to that of other native freshwater mussels. Males release sperm into the water column; the sperm are then taken in by the females through their siphons during feeding and respiration. The females retain the fertilized eggs in their gills until the larvae (glochidia) fully develop. The mussel glochidia are released into the water, and within a few days they must attach to the appropriate species of fish, which they parasitize for a short time while they develop into juvenile mussels. -
