AASC-32- 2019 Press Release Ambassador Romualdez on his First Visit to Arizona 24-26 March 2019, Arizona – Philippine Ambassador to the United States of America, His Excellency Jose Manuel Romualdez, visited Arizona for the first time as the country’s chief envoy bringing the country’s engagement with Grand Canyon State to new heights. His visit also reaffirmed the Philippine Government’s strong alliance with the U.S. (Photo below) The Philippine delegation headed by Ambassador Romuladez with State Representative Tony Rivero at the façade of the House of Representatives Museum. The Ambassador’s three-day visit included a town hall meeting with several Filipino- American community organizations in Arizona, interaction with Peoria High School students, call on the state legislature’s Speaker of the House and the Senate President, an address before the Arizona House of Representatives, partnership meeting with the Arizona State University, and a business meeting with the officials of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and ON Semiconductor Corporation. Joining the Ambassador as members of the Philippine delegation were Consul General Adelio Angelito S. Cruz of the Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles, Minister and Consul Gunther Emil Sales of the Philippine Embassy in Washington D.C., Consuls Rea G. Oreta and Dyan Kristine Miranda-Pastrana, Mary Grace Leano and Fernan Balicoco of the Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles. In his meetings with state government officials, Ambassador Romualdez conveyed the country’s interest in furthering its economic cooperation with Arizona, noting that the U.S. is the country’s third-largest import partner and second-largest export partner. The Ambassador also expressed his confidence in the ongoing discussion on the Free Trade Agreement between the two countries. He mentioned that both countries continuously Page 1 of 8 deepen their partnerships in the area of mutual defense, thereby ensuring stability and peace in the Indo-Pacific region. His meeting with the Filipino-American community organizations was an opportunity for the Ambassador to bring the Philippine government, its services and policies, closer to Filipino-Americans in this landlocked state. The meeting was attended by around 120 members of the community. The visit was a collaborative effort of the Philippine Embassy in Washington D.C. and Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles in coordination with the Office of Arizona State Representative Tony Rivero. Town Hall Meeting with the Filipino Community in Arizona Committed to understanding the pressing needs of overseas Filipinos in the U.S., Ambassador Romualdez spoke to over a hundred Filipino-Americans representing several organizations, under the auspices of the Council of Filipino Organizations of Arizona, at St. Paul Auditorium, Phoenix, Arizona on 24 March 2019. In his keynote message, the Ambassador assured the Filipinos that the paramount consideration of the government, as it strengthens its diplomatic ties, is to ensure the protection and advancement of their welfare. He also commended Filipinos in Arizona for being ambassadors themselves as they project a positive image of Filipinos as highly skilled and professional workers. This is based on positive feedback the Ambassador has received from his diplomatic counterparts. (Above photo) Amb. Page 2 of 8 Ambassador Romualdez and Consul General Adelio Angelito Cruz had a lively exchange with the community and answered questions during the open forum. Majority of the questions of the attendees were on consular services and professional license renewal. Interaction with Peoria High School Students (Above photo) The Ambassador, with Rep. Rivero, keenly listens to the views and aspirations of Peoria High school student leaders. Ambassador Romualdez had the opportunity to interact with student leaders and shared his inspiring career story with Peoria High School students during his visit on 25 March 2019. The Ambassador also reminded the students in his speech at the school’s auditorium, that learning is a never-ending process. It is important that they acquire information relevant to making the world a better place to live in for everyone. Such a goal could be achieved through cooperation and collective action. He also encouraged them to always do good and help others. During the roundtable with student leaders, the Ambassador gamely answered questions on education, traffic, Philippine Air Force and basketball in the Philippines. Peoria High School is the oldest high school in the Peoria Unified School District in Arizona and was opened in 1919. It serves grades 9 to 12 and has a small population of Filipino-American students. Speaker of the House Russell Bowers presents Ambassador Romualdez with his own painting entitled, “Storm over Mineral Park.” Ambassador Romualdez called on Speaker Russell Bowers of the Arizona House of Representatives before addressing the Arizona House of Representatives. The two expressed keen interest to explore possible areas of cooperation between the Philippines and Arizona, particularly in high school education exchange. Speaker Bowers is also a classically trained artist who specialized in watercolor, oil painting and sculpture. As a token, he presented the Ambassador with his own work entitled, “Storm over Mineral Park.” Page 4 of 8 Speech before the Arizona House of Representatives Ambassador Romualdez addresses Arizona’s 54th legislature Ambassador Romualdez delivered an address before the Arizona House of Representatives in a protocol session on 25 March 2019 and reaffirmed the strong alliance and deep friendship between the Philippines and the United States. The Ambassador recalled the legacy of the late Senator, John McCain, who had been a friend and an ally of the Philippines in the United States Senate. He highlighted the Philippines’ success story, currently being the fastest growing economy in Asia, and emphasized that now is the best time to engage the country. One of the major initiatives proposed by the Ambassador in his speech is the forging of a sister city agreement between any of the major cities of the Philippines and Arizona. If forged, it will be the first sister city agreement between the Philippines and Arizona. Ambassador Romualdez is the first Philippine government official to address the Arizona House of Representatives. Page 5 of 8 Courtesy call on the Senate President Ambassador Romualdez calls on Arizona Senate President Karen Fann Ambassador Romualdez and Arizona Senate President Karen Fann had a cordial discussion regarding developments in the Philippines and in Arizona, as well as a possible education exchange between universities in the two countries. He also conveyed his appreciation to the Arizona government for the warm treatment extended by the state to Filipino migrants in the Grand Canyon State, who are mostly in the field of education and healthcare. Senate President Kann has been a Senator since 2017 and is the second woman in the history of Arizona state legislature to serve as Senate President. Dinner with the Members of the Arizona House of Representatives The Arizona House of Representatives hosted a dinner in honor of the Ambassador at Match Restaurant, home of two-Michelin starred chef, Alex Stratta, located in the Found:Re Phoenix Hotel, a trendy boutique hotel in downtown Phoenix. The dinner was attended by some 30 guests from the Arizona state legislature including Representatives John Allen, Diego Espinoza, John Kavanagh, Myron Tsosie and Tony Rivero. Ambassador Romualdez and Consul General Cruz met with the Executive Vice President of the Arizona State University (ASU), Sethuraman Panchanathan to discuss potential collaboration between educational institutions in Manila and ASU on scholarship exchange and research partnership. ASU is one of the fastest growing universities in the United States especially in the fields of research and innovation. ASU played a pivotal role in the technology behind the Opportunity Mars Exploration Rover.
