I granted the attainment of immortality, so that the bhikshu gained accomplishment, both supreme and ordinary p. They are plotting boundless, nameless evils against our Lord, the second Buddha. Our great religious king, sky-jewel though he be, is held in no regard. The Dharma will not spread; the Doctrine will not take root; and now they will perpetrate the five sins of immediate perdition. Could death itself be more fearful than this? Even if Tibet were to become a desert, it would be as nothing. Come what may, we must protect our Guru and his Consort. This was done by Namkhai Nyingpowho was adept in the art of writing with miraculous speed; by Atsara Pelyang, most exact and careful; by Denma Tsemang, excellent in orthography, speed and accuracy; by Kawa Peltsek, adept in orthography; by Chokro Gyaltsen, a master penman; by Yudra Nyingpo, skilled in grammar and logic; by Vairotsana, accomplished in all these arts; and by myself, Yeshe Tsogyal, who had attained unfailing memory. And there were others too—the twenty-five disciples and many heart sons. Some wrote in Sanskrit, some in the scripts of the dakinis, some in Newari, some in fire script, some in water script, some in air script, some in blood script. Some used Tibetan letters, both uchen and ume, the chagkyu scripts of both long, short and thick black letters. Some wrote with the scripts of dm and drutsa, khong seng and khyinyal, kangring, and kangthung, with all the signs of punctuation. We compiled a million cycles of practice upon the Mind of the Guru, ten thousand cycles of Nyingtik: tantras, agamas, and upadeshas and so on, all extremely profound. Those that were extensive were nevertheless of crucial importance; those that were short were nonetheless complete; however easy to practice, they were filled with great blessings; Lady of the Lotus-born: The Life and Enlightenment of Yeshe Tsogyal and swift, they were replete with all that was needful. In order to inspire confidence, lists Lady of the Lotus-born: The Life and Enlightenment of Yeshe Tsogyal location, inner and inner-most prophetic guides, and predictions concerning their discovery were added. All was arranged and set in order. The pious king beheld a vision of Manjushri and understood within his heart what was true Dharma and what was falsehood. Most of the people were saying that the Buddhists had the victory, with a doctrine that was great and wondrous. And with that, they began to disperse, giving their word that they would all practice it. The religious king, however, decreed that the Tibetan translators and the Bonpos should prepare themselves for debate. The great translator Vairotsana measured himself against Thangnak, while Namkhai Nyingpo contended with Tongyu. And likewise each of the translators debated with one of the Bon, even though not a single one of their opponents could rival them. The king had decided that established truths should be recorded by white pebbles, while falsity should be marked by black. Vairotsana took nine hundred white pebbles for the truth, while to Thangnak fell five thousand pebbles of falsity. With shouts of joy, the translators raised their banner. Namkhai Nyingpo of the clan of Nub gained three thousand white pebbles and Tongyu thirty thousand black, and again the translators held aloft their standard. Tsogyal vied with Yudrung Bonmo Tso of the Chokro clan and worsted her in the Lady of the Lotus-born: The Life and Enlightenment of Yeshe Tsogyal. As will be told, she performed wonders that left Bonmo Lady of the Lotus-born: The Life and Enlightenment of Yeshe Tsogyal speechless. In the same way, the one hundred and twenty translators were Lady of the Lotus-born: The Life and Enlightenment of Yeshe Tsogyal, and all the Bon, the nine great scholars at their head, were defeated and left dumb-founded. Their tongues shrank in their heads, their lips grew stiff and hard, the sweat stood out upon their brows, their knees trembled and shook, and not a word could they say pp. To the king in particular he gave the seven root sadhanas of Dutsi Yonten and twenty pith instructions, telling him to practice them. When the pious king promulgated the second religious law, the Dharmadrum was beaten in Samye, the Dharma-conch was blown, the Dharma- banner was hoisted and the Dharma-thrones were set in place. The twenty-one panditas of India sat on seats of nine brocade cushions, while Padmasambhava, the Mighty One of Orgyen, together with the Bodhisattva Abbot from Zahor, and Vimalamitra, the Sage of Kashmir, sat at the front upon great thrones of gold. Vairotsana and Namkhai Nyingpo the translators took their seats on nine cushions of brocade, while all the other translators sat on brocade cushions also, two or three apiece. Then the king presented them with sumptuous gifts of gold and other things. To each of the Indian panditas he gave nine rolls of brocade, three golden ingots, three measures of gold dust, and so on, piling them up as high as mountains. To the three Masters from Orgyen, Zahor, and Kashmir he offered mandalas of gold and turquoise, heaps of silk and satin and numberless other lovely gifts, requesting them to propagate the twofold tradition of sutra and mantra in the land of Tibet. Then the time arrived for the contest in signs of accomplishment. Vairotsana began by holding the three levels of the world in the palm of his hand. Namkhai Nyingpo rode upon the sunbeams, displaying many marvels. Simply by pointing his phurba, Sangye Yeshe subdued harmful forces and with a stroke could destroy his enemies. Striking rocks with it, he could pierce them through. As Dodrup Tenpai Nyima makes clear, beings able to reveal Termas must have at least the realization of the Perfection Stage practices. On the other hand, the one who originates the Treasures must have the supreme attainment of Buddhahood. Lady of the Lotus-Born is thus a testimony of Yeshe Tsogyal's enlightenment. Among lay Tibetans she is seen as a Buddha who takes the form of an ordinary woman so as to be accessible to the average person, "who, for the time being, do not see her Vajravarahi form as a fully perfected deity. According to legend she was born in the same manner as the Buddhaa Sanskrit mantra sounding as her mother gave birth painlessly, and she is considered a reincarnation of the Buddha's own mother, Maya Devi. Her name "Primordial ye Wisdom shes Queen rgyal mo of the Lake tso " derives from her birth causing a nearby lake to double in size. As a young girl, she is said to have prayed for the happiness of all sentient beings. At the age of sixteen, she was initiated into Buddhism by Guru Padmasambhava. Although she was originally one of the Queen consorts of Trisong Detsenshe was given to Padmasambhava and became his main spiritual consort.

Focusing on the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, I argue that Mindroling was a seminal religio-cultural institution that played a key role in cultivating the ruling elite class during a critical moment of Tibet’s history. This analysis demonstrates that the connections between Buddhism and high culture have been salient throughout the history of Buddhism, rendering the project relevant to a broad range of fields within Asian Studies and the Study of Religion. As the first extensive Western-language study of Mindroling, this project employs an interdisciplinary methodology combining historical, sociological, cultural and religious studies, and makes use of diverse Tibetan sources. Mindroling was founded in 1676 with ties to Tibet’s nobility and the Fifth Dalai Lama’s newly centralized government. It was a center for elite education until the twentieth century, and in this regard it was comparable to a Western university where young members of the nobility spent two to four years training in the arts and sciences and being shaped for positions of authority. This comparison serves to highlight commonalities between distant and familiar educational models and undercuts the tendency to diminish Tibetan culture to an exoticized imagining of Buddhism as a purely ascetic, world renouncing tradition.

    About the 17th Karmapa Liao Yiwu On the morning of 4 June, 1989, a contingent of over two hundred thousand soldiers surrounded the Chinese capital of Beijing, where they opened fire on unarmed protesters in a massacre at Tiananmen Square that shook the entire world. On 5 March of that same year, there had been another large massacre in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa, news of this earlier event had been effectively suppressed. Because of the absence of the Western news media, the PLA’s cold- blooded killing of Tibetan protesters was never recorded on camera. The holy city of Lhasa was about ten times smaller than Beijing at that time, and Bajiao Square where the massacre took place was about ten times smaller than Tiananmen Square, and yet over ten thousand peaceful protesters assembled in that narrow square, where they clashed with some fifteen thousand heavily-armed soldiers. As a result of this encounter, more than three hundred civilians lost their lives, another three thousand were imprisoned, and the “worst offenders” were subsequently sentenced to death. The Jokhang Temple located next to the Potala Palace was attacked and occupied by army troops because it was flying the Snow Lion Flag of Tibetan independence, and it was burned to the ground along with its precious copy of the Pagoda Scriptures, a text which symbolizes the dignity of Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism. Tens of thousands of Tibetan Buddhists stood in the street bewailing the loss of their sacred text, and the lamas continually tried to rush into the burning temple to rescue the scriptures, but were shot down amidst the flames.

Maki 2 June, 1998 Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, Padmakara, or Tsokey Dorje, was the guru predicted by the Buddha Shakyamuni to bring the Buddhist Dharma to Tibet. In the land of Uddiyana, King Indrabhuti had undergone many trials, including the loss of his young son and a widespread famine in his kingdom. The Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara felt compassion for the king, and entreated the Buddha Amitabha, pictured directly above Padmasambhava, to help him. From his tongue, Amitabha emanated a light ray into the lake of Kosha, and a lotus grew, upon which sat an eight year old boy. The boy was taken into the kingdom of Uddiyana as the son of King Indrabhuti and named Padmasambhava, or Lotus Born One. Padmasambhava grew up to make realizations about the unsatisfactory nature of existence, which led to his renunciation of both kingdom and family in order to teach the Dharma to those entangled in samsara. Over the years, as he taught, other names were bestowed upon him in specific circumstances to represent his realization of a particular aspect of Buddhism. This thangka depicts Padmasambhava, in a form also called Tsokey Dorje, as a great guru and Buddha in the land of Tibet.
