07 COUNTRY WISE BREAK- UP OF FOREIGN TOURISTS VISITING THE STATE
UK and USA were the major tourist generating markets for Odisha during the year 2015 with 8,921 and 7,847 tourists respectively. Out of the total tourist arrival of 66,971 followed by France – 5,169, Germany— 4,552 , China- 3,655, Japan – 3,641, Italy- 3,619 and Netherland- 2,949 . The number of foreign tourist arrival from different countries during last 3 years is given in the following table.

West Bengal continued to be the major tourist generating state for Odisha contributing 16,32,376 tourists i. e 14% of the total domestic tourists of 1,17,86,117 during 2015 and followed by Maharashtra – 3,09,973 ,Madhya Pradesh-2,95,833, Andhra Pradesh-2,89,938, Chhattisgarh- 2,72,260,Uttar Pradesh- 2,71,081 and Jharkhand -2,41,615. It is difficult to estimate the earnings of the State from tourism because of the very nature of the industry and the different sectors that are affected by it. However, an attempt was made to assess it by following sample survey method.A Tourist Profile Survey was conducted by the Department of Tourism, Govt. of Odisha during the year 2008 -09. At that time the average duration of stay was found out to be 14.2 days in case of Foreign Tourist and 3.7 days in case of a Domestic Tourist. Similarly the average per capita expenditure was found out to be Rs.2255/- for a Foreign Tourist and Rs.1357/- for of a Domestic Tourist. In the year 2013-14 another Tourist Profile Survey was conducted by the Department of Tourism to find out the changes ,if any occurred in the Tourist Profiles . It was found that average duration of stay is 11.0 days in case of a Foreign Tourist and 3.7 days in case of a Domestic Tourist . Similarly the average per capita expenditure was found to be Rs. 4167 /- in case of Foreign Tourist and Rs.2763 /- in case of Domestic Tourist. The inflow of money through tourist expenditure for the year 2013 is estimated on the basis of changed figures as mentioned above. The estimated figures are shown below in a table.
