Treibsätze Der Geschichtspolitik. Die Gedenkfeiern Der Tiroler Erhebung 1909–2009
Treibsätze der Geschichtspolitik. Die Gedenkfeiern der Tiroler Erhebung 1909–2009 Hans Heiss Sandwirt: Büxenlader! Ös müeßts ladn. Grad was ös derladets. -

Landscapes of Glory and Grief: Representations of the Italian Front and its Topography in the Art of Stephanie Hollenstein and Albin Egger-Lienz, and the Poetry of Gustav Heinse By Francesca Roe A dissertation submitted to the University of Bristol in accordance with the requirements for award of the degree of MPhil in the Faculty of Arts, School of Modern Languages (German), August 2014. Supervised by Professor Robert Vilain and Doctor Steffan Davies Student Number: 1346104 25,000 Words 1. Historicist Idealism and Regional Identities: The Outbreak of War in Austria- Hungary In August 1914, the Berlin dramatist and critic Julius Bab and the Prague Germanist Adolf von Hauffen conducted independent analyses of German-language newspapers, magazines and pamphlets, and both concluded that an astonishing 50,000 pro-war poems were published daily in that month alone.1 Although it is difficult to state with certainty whether the researchers included Austro-Hungarian publications in their estimations (it would have been unusual for the conservative von Hauffen to have ignored the material published in his homeland), a brief survey of the poetry produced in the Dual Monarchy2 confirms that its German-speaking population experienced a ‘Kriegsbegeisterung’ just as profound as that of their German counterparts, a vociferous enthusiasm for war that affected individuals from all classes, generations and professions, and led to a remarkable outpouring of propagandist art and literature across the Habsburg Empire. 1 Klaus Zelewitz, ‘Deutschböhmische Dichter und der Erste Weltkrieg’, in Österreich und der Große Krieg 1914-1918. C ULTURAL IDENT I TY STUD I E S The South Tyrol Question, CIS 1866–2010 Georg Grote From National Rage to Regional State South Tyrol is a small, mountainous area located in the central Alps. Despite its modest geographical size, it has come to represent a success story in the Georg Grote protection of ethnic minorities in Europe. When Austrian South Tyrol was given to Italy in 1919, about 200,000 German and Ladin speakers became Italian citizens overnight. Despite Italy’s attempts to Italianize the South Tyroleans, especially during the Fascist era from 1922 to 1943, they sought to Question, 1866–2010 Tyrol South The maintain their traditions and language, culminating in violence in the 1960s. In 1972 South Tyrol finally gained geographical and cultural autonomy from Italy, leading to the ‘regional state’ of 2010. This book, drawing on the latest research in Italian and German, provides a fresh analysis of this dynamic and turbulent period of South Tyrolean and European history. The author provides new insights into the political and cultural evolution of the understanding of the region and the definition of its role within the European framework. In a broader sense, the study also analyses the shift in paradigms from historical nationalism to modern regionalism against the backdrop of European, global, national and local historical developments as well as the shaping of the distinct identities of its multilingual and multi-ethnic population. Georg Grote was born in the Lower Rhine Valley in northwest Germany. He has lived in Ireland since 1993 and lectures in Western European history at CIS University College Dublin. -

The article featured the now famous Operation Greenup and its chief operator Frederick “Fred” Mayer. Operation Greenup was one of some thirty intelligence operations conducted by the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) division for Germany and Austria from Bari, Italy, with the target region of the southern parts of Germany, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia. The OSS launched a series of other operations into the German Reich from Switzerland, France, Scandinavia and the Netherlands, but none achieved the success of Operation Greenup. Altogether, the American and British forces carried out more than 21,000 airborne and parachute operations in Europe, nearly half of which supported the partisan movement in Yugoslavia.
