Area Partnership Profile Maryhill/Kelvin Area Partnership Multi Member Electoral Ward 15 This profile provides comparative information on the Maryhill/Kelvin Area Partnership/ Multi Member Electoral Ward including information on the population; health; labour market; poverty; community safety and public facilities within the area. 1. General Information about the Maryhill/Kelvin Area Partnership 1.1 Maryhill/Kelvin Area Partnership covers the areas of Wyndford, Kelvindale, Gilshochill, Cadder, Summerston and Acre. Housing ranges from traditional sandstone tenements to large housing association estates. The Forth and Clyde Canal runs through the area. It has a mixed population including a large number of students. Demographic & Socio Economic Information 2.1 At the time of writing, the available 2011 Census Information does not provide all the information included in this section (e.g. household composition). Thus, some information in the profile is based on other information sources which are identified in the report. The profile will be updated as and when further 2011 Census information is available. Population 2.2 Based on the 2011 Census, the total population within Maryhill/Kelvin AP is 26,971. Maryhill/Kelvin AP has the second smallest population among the seven APs in the North West Sector equating to 13.1% of the estimated North West Sector population (n 206,483) and 4.6% of the estimated population in Glasgow City. 2.3 86% of the population are White – British or Irish. The percentage (14%) of ethnic minorities including Black or Minority Ethnic (BME – 10.5%) and other white (non UK/non Irish – 3.6%) resident in the Area Partnership is the third highest within the North West but is below the overall levels for North West Glasgow (BME 11.9%; other white non UK/non Irish 4.9%) and Glasgow City (BME 11.6%; other white non UK/non Irish 3.9%). 2.4 Within the overall AP ward population, Table 2 below illustrates the main age band populations both numerically and in percentage terms enabling comparisons with North West Glasgow and Glasgow City. Page 2 of 33 2.6 North West: In comparison to other wards within the North West, Maryhill/Kelvin AP has the lowest number of people of working age among the seven North West APs. 2.7 Glasgow: As already mentioned, the demographic profile is very similar to the profile for Glasgow City. Housing 2.8 As of the 1st April 2013, the total housing stock in this Area Partnership was estimated as 13,654. 2.9 Households: Based on 2010 estimates, Table 3 illustrates that 22% (n 2,914) of households in Maryhill/Kelvin AP have children residing in them of which 33% (n956; 7.3% of all households) were single parent households. The level of households with children and single parent households is in line with the Glasgow average (23% households with children; 7.2% single parent households) and slightly above the North West averages (20% households with children; 6.5% single parent households). There are significant differences across the ward, for example, 36% of households with children in North Maryhill & Summerston are single parent households, compared with 11% in Kelvindale/Kelvinside. Source: Glasgow City Council; Development & Regeneration Services; Development Plan Group; 24th October 2011 2.10 Housing Stock by Tenure: Based on an estimate as of 1st April 2013, Table 4 provides the details by type of tenure and by housing neighbourhood. 62% of the housing stock in the AP is either owner occupied (48.1%) or private rented (13.9%). The overall level of privately funded housing is below the average level for the North West and for Glasgow City (65% and 63% respectively) with the level of private rented housing being significantly below the average level for the North West and for Glasgow City (22% and 19% respectively). Nearly three quarters (74%) of the housing in the Kelvindale / Kelvinside part of the Area Partnership are owner occupied compared with 31% in Maryhill Road Corridor. The high level of private rental housing is not consistent across the neighbourhoods within the AP. 2.11 In comparative terms, the level (38%) of social rented housing overall in Maryhill/Kelvin AP is the fourth highest among the seven North West APs and is Page 3 of 33 also slightly above the equivalent level for Glasgow City (36.9%). The level of social rented housing varies across the four neighbourhoods within the AP, ranging from 1.4% in Kelvindale/Kelvinside to 48% in Maryhill Road Corridor. The level of flat dwellings in this AP is the third highest percentage among the 7 North West APs and the accommodation type profile is in line with the overall Glasgow City accommodation profile. This Band A-C level is higher than the average for the North West of Glasgow (62%) and the Scottish average (62%) but lower than the Glasgow average (71%); x More than a quarter of (26%) rated in Band A (£0 - £27,000) which is the second highest level in the North West and the ninth highest among the 21 APs in Glasgow.
